Article I found on Hackaday: http://hackaday.com/2013/08/12/0x10c-becomes-a-community-devloped-game/

Apparently, Notch is stopping development of the game and there are plans to make it open source. This might pay off really well for them (look at the sheer amount of Minecraft mods and user content) or fall flat on it's face due to lack of any actual structure.

Anyone who was paying attention to this should have realised it would never happen. Notch doesn't really make games anymore, he hires people to do it for him while he messes around.

@deegee: You know, he can do that and it'll be fine. XD

I hope he tries and puts his mind onto something cool in the future though. Talented in his own weird way.

I wish the community luck, but building this game seems like it might a bit too lofty a goal for a bunch of assorted Minecraft modders.

I love the idea of the emulated ship computer that anyone can write apps for in pseudo-assembly code, but I never expected much from this one.

I have a nephew that thinks Notch is the greatest game design genius ever and while I'm impressed with Mincraft and can't deny that it's the most succesful indie game ever, IMO Notch basically just got lucky with it and he'll probably never have another idea that comes close to being as successful. I've played some of his other stuff he made before and after Minecraft and while they're neat prototypes and game jam games, they're rarely unique or brilliant.

Notch started with Infiniminer and added a lot of elements he liked from other games and got a lot of people interested before he was even finished with it. If it hadn't built up such a dedicated community of modders so quickly, I doubt it would have ever have become a game complete enough to be released on a console. I'm not saying that he didn't put those elements together well and while there are things in the game that I think are clever--I wonder with things like redstone if he had any idea just what could be done with some of those systems when he first added them--I still don't see him as some kind of singular genus of game design.

I see this going a few different ways. I don't see the entire community creating a single, well-designed game out of this. If thy're lucky, they will all contribute a lot of individual mods to it that may or may not work well together. The more likely scenario is that this becomes what Infiniminer was to Minecraft for a few small teams or individuals that iterate off of it in different directions.

Not surprised at all. I had a feeling that either this would happen or the game would come out and be a broken mess.
