Compete against other players on Xbox Live using your Avatar to answer questions and win real prizes in the XBOX Live Primetime video game version of the TV game show.

Concept

1 vs 100 is an upcoming Xbox Live Primetime game currently in open beta on XBOX 360. It is based on the popular Endemol TV game show of the same title, hosted by Bob Saget. Emmy Award winner Chris Cashman serves as the host Avatar and gives commentary along with an A.I. Avatar co-host who is voiced by Jen Taylor (voice of Cortana from the Halo series) who serves as the game's announcer. There are be two weekly live airings of the game. A version called "Extended Play" airs on the remaining days that the live version does not. It does not feature Chris Cashman's live hosting and instead of directly earning prizes in their participation in The Mob or as The One, players earn entries in a sweepstakes instead.

The game can be considered a form of MMO (massively multiplayer online) game because it is played over Xbox Live with 100 real players, playing against one player. Those 100 players are referred to as "The Mob" and the one person who plays against The Mob is known as "The One". As of July 10th, real prizes have been given out to players over XBOX Live. The One can earn increasing values of Microsoft Points (through 10,000) and the top 3 members of The Mob can each earn a number of Microsoft Points as well as an XBOX Live Arcade game. Along with The Mob and The One, players on Xbox Live can be a part of "The Crowd" and watch the show unfold as they play along and compete amongst themselves in groups of four. They not only serve as potential contestants, but they also serve as "helps" in the game, where The One can automatically generate his or her answer based on audience responses.

1 vs 100 is Free to play on XBOX Live with a standard XBOX Live Gold account, as the game is ad driven. Players are treated to periodic 15-30 second "commercial breaks" at various points during both the live show and Extended Play.

Gameplay

Live Show Structure

Gameplay starts with a short set up period where The One and The Mob are randomly chosen. Players are then placed in their areas. The One is placed center stage next to the co-host. The 100 members of the Mob are aligned inside squares in horizontal ascending rows in front of The One. The Audience is placed into groups of four in the spectator seats where they will compete with each other for score, as well as for a higher chance at being picked as a contestant in the show. Entries are erased at the end of each week to give all players a fresh start and chance at getting into the game.

Once the game starts, everyone is given short amounts of time to answer multiple choice trivia questions in a variety of subjects. It is the goal of both The One and The Mob to outlast each other by answering questions correctly. One wrong answer will eliminate The One and each member of The Mob that incorrectly answered the question. As each member of The Mob is eliminated the value of the current Microsoft Point prize increases. It increases for every 10 Mob members eliminated up to a cap of 10,000 for the top prize. If The One outlasts every single member of The Mob, they are awarded the top prize and The Mob gets nothing. If The One incorrectly answers a question, he or she is eliminated and receives nothing. If this happens, the top three scoring members of The Mob will win a XBOX Live Arcade game download code. At predetermined times, The One can also choose to take the current prize and leave, thus ending the current game and awarding the Mob nothing. When either side is eliminated or The One chooses to keep the money, a new One and Mob is chosen from The Crowd. This is done after a short break where current gameplay stats, scores, leaderboards, and advertisements are shown. At various times during the game, the host will provide commentary on the current game in varying ways.

Helps

The One is given a variety of "Helps" or special options that they can use one time each that can either help or hurt them should they choose to use one during a question. These helps include "Trust the Brain", "Trust the Mob", and "Trust the Crowd". Trust the Mob is an option that lets The One decide not to answer a question themselves and instead go along with whatever answer the majority of The Mob chose, Trust the Brain chooses the answer that the top player has chosen, and Trust the Crowd chooses the answer that the majority of the crowd has chosen  This can obviously either help or hurt depending on if the chosen target has answered the question right or wrong.

Extended Play

Extended Play is a daily version of 1 vs 100 that is not hosted live and runs in 30 minute episodes. It is usually General Trivia except for Special Featured Episodes that usually take place at the very end or towards the end of a set of episodes. Extended Play works exactly as a Live episode with minor exceptions. In Extended Play every Player is placed in the Mob and there is no One present. Instead of competing against the One you instead try to secure the top score of everyone playing as well as your 4 player party. There is a total of 37 questions in every 30 minute Episode. Exclusive to Extended Play is the earning and use of "Skips". A player earns a skip for every 3 consecutive correct answers and can hold up to three Skips total. When a player uses a skip they chose to skip a question instead of answering it. This allows them to keep their streak bonus intact, however they will not earn any points for that question.

Featured Extended Play Episodes

Featured Extended Play Episodes are special episodes that hold questions all part of a select theme. Currently there are 4 different Featured Episodes, They Are:

  • Community Written -This version features questions written by the 1 vs 100 community. Each question is displayed with the Xbox Live Gamertag of the person who submitted it.
  • Super Hard - Features questions that are much more challenging than the average 1 vs 100 question.
  • He Said/She Said - Back and forth between questions that a Male player would most likely know and a Female would most likely know.
  • In The News - Questions pulled from current news headlines from around the world.

Use of XBOX Live Avatars

1 vs 100 uses over 100 XBOX Live Avatars per game to simulate a host, co-host, player, and audience. Players have a variety of Avatar actions they can perform, such as waves, dances, and fist pumps. The camera will fix its position to highlight various player's Avatars during various times during gameplay. 1 vs 100 currently has the highest number of Avatars on screen at one time. The Host is an Avatar Version of Chris Cashman and the co-host is an Avatar version of Jen Taylor. The game automatically adds emotions to Avatars at different times throughout the game.
