1942 is a vertical shooter set in an exaggerated World War 2 universe. It went on to be one of Capcom's very first hits.

Concepts

2D

Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Auto-Scrolling Levels

Levels that progress forward by themselves at a fixed rate.
Blinking Comeback

It happens when a character loses a life or has his progress somehow hampered and comes back in a state of temporary invincibility (usually blinking).
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Bosses

Video game bosses are usually the main antagonist, and arch nemesis of the main protagonist. In most cases the end of a game is when the main character defeats the final boss.
Continue

The continue is a classic gaming concept, and usually arises when the player "dies" or fails in the game. Usually some loss is tied to a continue, in a form of a "life" or something of other value.
Death

The main line of distinction between victory or failure in video games, death is the process of a biological being ceasing to be alive.
Dogfight

The act of aerial combat between two or more fighter aircraft. A common occurrence in many combat flight games, it is the equivalent of a firefight in a first- or third-person shooter.
Evade

To elude, escape, or get away from. Some games require you to escape from some people or things to perform some objective or avoid death.
Fascism

Fascism is a controversial totalitarian, nationalistic political ideology. Within video games, various Fascist regimes are often portrayed as the enemy within the Second World War.
Flight

It's not just for airplanes anymore: Game mascots and MMO players alike have taken to the skies. Players can use flight to quickly navigate large levels, find hidden items, or take opponents down.
High Score

In many games there is a ranking system, the players with the highest point value are listed in a "high score" table.
Instant Death

Instant death is a situation where the player-controlled character loses his life immediately. The quickness of that demise is often a stark departure from the balance of power, and sometimes the rules, established by the developers during the rest of the game.
Kamikaze

A character that deliberately destroys themselves in order to kill their enemies. This can be something like letting a grenade kill yourself and your enemy in a first person shooter.
Lives

The concept of lives in video games evolved to let the player get a second chance after failing once. The most recognizable symbol is the heart.
Loading Screens

Loading Screens are specific screens that are displayed while a game is loading resources so that the player has something to distract them while the game loads. Loading Screens can be images, text or even mini-games - and sometimes a combination of all three.
Peashooter

The peashooter is the default weapon used at the start and after dying in many arcade style games.
PlayChoice-10

The PlayChoice-10 was an arcade console released by Nintendo containing ten Nintendo Entertainment System games per unit.
Porting

Porting is a term used when a game designed to run on one platform is converted to run on a different platform. Quality varies, though some titles are packaged with extras.
Press Select to Select

These games take the select button literally. Pushing up and down (or any other button) to select an option will do nothing.
Roll

A roll consists of simultaneous vertical and horizontal movement of a body. There are several variations of a roll, and some vehicles are also capable of this movement.
Smart Bomb

A super weapon, often found in scrolling/rail shooters which destroys all enemies on screen instantly.
Upgradeable Vehicles

The ability, through purchasing, winning, unlocking, or other means, to change your vehicle (usually for the better). Changes can be alterations to original vehicle or a completely new vehicle.
Vertical Scrolling

Vertical scrolling is when the screen scrolls along the y-axis. In a vertical scrolling game the player usually starts from the bottom of the screen and moves up. They are also almost always presented in a top-down perspective.
World War II

Lasting from 1939-1945, WWII was a conflict between the Allies (America, Russia, and Great Britain) and the Axis (Germany, Japan and Italy) in the bloodiest war in human history.
Year in the Title

The title of a game is a year, or has a year in it. Normally used for sports game and other annual titles, but also used to designate when a game takes place rather than the year released.
