How To Build A Bomb: Episode 4

In this week’s extra-long installment, we explain why light is our #1 enemy, wax poetic about the importance of databases, and take you behind-the-scenes at our new podcasting table, where many poor-tasting beverages are freely consumed.

Oh goody. An extra 15 minutes of fun that my life could use right now. Thanks guys. Dare I say……more more MORE!

Now here’s an idea….how about audio reviews that you compile at the end of the week? You know for lazy bums like me who don’t have time for reading. Just one dandy audio file with the great JnR’s critique on the games they’re playing?

I agree with the venerable “DrTones.” I’d rather have audio reviews than video reviews, since I could listen to audio reviews in the office while I’m working. The more video game things I have to distract me from responsibilities, the better!

Great show. The podcast was even funnier the second time around, in video form! By the way, the posting time is 7:37am - was Jeff up early or up late?
Finally, have you guys thought about the upside of having real drink reviews on your site? I mean,IGN does games, comics, sports, movies, etc. but who does video games AND drinks? It’s a great fit for that core 14-34 demographic!

Id set up a second monitor just to watch. I can record a few songs for the site if you want. Allthough i know Jeff loves doing it but ya never know when your in a jam. I think the Giantbomb theme song should be a song with the word bomb in it. Maybe you can change each week between every GOOD song with the word bomb in it. A good song such as “Sex Bomb” by Tom Jones. Or songs like “Bombtrack” and “Calm Like a Bomb” both by Rage Against the Machine.

I am from saudi arabia and on the spot was the only vid pod cast that was keeping me from terrest activities but now I am being tought how to build a bomb by my mentors jef and rian.
I am praying for thier succes and I am still going to watch on the spot and hope that 1up will stop using bad words just to seem mature, even in their lost odysy review they were looking for content that they think make a mature game like blood, sex and curses. what kind of criteria is this for a fricin review??!
any way ,good luck guys ,we are with u.

Great video guys! Being able to see your reactions to the drinks was hilarious. It adds a lot to the already great taste-testing segment of the podcast and is something I would love to see included with each podcast. Then I could of seen what the Ironbrew (Iron Brew?) drink looked like. :)

Wasn’t going to say anything until I saw all those positive posts and I wanted to inject some reality. The video was terrible and you guys have big balls to post it. I only made it 5 minutes in, your hook, chatting about how an overhead light broke failed to suck me right in I guess. I thought this website was about video games. This video is hilarious for all the wrong reasons and makes you two look about as professional as two dudes chilling in a basement somewhere screwing around with some video/audio equipment. Why show people the awkward growing phase? It just makes you guys look silly.

Hey Jeff, I just wanted to say I just found this site through the GamesRadar interview. I knew you were blogging, but I didn’t know what site it was. I can’t wait to see the full site, and these behind the scenes videos are awesome. I don’t want to sound like an advertising robot, but we will definitely be supporting you guys over here at Wii Live. By the way, that is an awesome telecaster in the podcast room.

I watched this to see the behind-the-scenes sort of stuff and what I discovered is two chubby guys in someone’s basement acting like they are 13. Wow. Jeff, you write great reviews man, great stuff, really detailed. But. This. Ouch. Is this what people fill their iPods up with? Is that guy really your mother? Anyway, I’ll keep reading the reviews but no more podcasts for me which is good for me and you prolly don’t care, so, good for me.

I really wanted to thoroughly enjoy this video as much as the others, but it was a bit too much on the…well…on nothing in particular. I was hoping to see more of the internal workings of what you guys do (like this episode of David the Gnome I saw as a kid where he takes you on a tour of his house in the tree, which was totally sweet because it had a trapdoor and all). Love the site and the info, but my personal taste when it comes to the videos is: a little less rambling and a little more gaming (and explosions, if possible). Cannot wait to watch this site keep growing!

    Justice is served

    Source: kotaku.com
    Date: 4th April 2008

    ——————————————————————
When long-time GameSpot reviewer and editorial director Jeff Gerstmann was let go from the site last November—with sources pointing to his review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men as the catalyst for his termination—fingers were also pointed at executive Josh Larson, VP of games at parent company CNET. Larson, who replaced former Editor in Chief Greg Kasavin, was implicated by anonymous GameSpot employees to have had the “church-and-state separation between the sales teams and the editorial team” “cracked” under his tenure. Whether the VP, Jeff’s supervisor at the time, was the key decision maker in letting Gerstmann go we can’t confirm, but we can confirm that Larson will be leaving the company next week.

Internal communication informing employees of the cut were forwarded to Kotaku last night, indicating that a “new management structure means that Josh Larson’s position as VP, Games is being eliminated and Josh will be leaving the company.” CNET announced last week that it would cut 10 percent of its work force, about 120 employees. We contacted GameSpot Editor in Chief Ricardo Torres to verify the news this morning.

Torres confirmed that Larson’s last day would be April 9, but declined to comment much further on the restructuring, citing the “internal” nature of the news.

It was clear that, at the time, Larson’s capabilities as editorial lead weren’t well regarded by some of the GameSpot staff. The anonymous “gamespot” commented at sister site Valleywag that Larson was “a suit […] who had no editorial experience and was only involved on the business side of things.” The anonymous commenter lamented that the presence of the sales team had become much more visible under Larson’s watch, with other contributors going on and off record with less than favorable comments of CNET management.

In the months that followed Gerstmann’s dismissal, GameSpot lost a sizable portion of its editorial staff, with reviewers Alex Navarro, Frank Provo, Ryan Davis, Brad Shoemaker and Jason Ocampo leaving for other, sometimes unspecified opportunities. Torres told us that GameSpot continues to bring on new editorial talent and plans to continue its coverage “with the same breadth and depth we have in our previous 11 years.”

I can’t wait for this website to get big. I’m kind of late to the party finding out about the bull that happened over at Gamespot. I was wondering why things were so dull lately. :) I’m a gaming enthusiast and a Game Art & Design student. Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Davis were two of the best editors at Gamespot. Alex Navarro was also one of my favorites. Besides all mighty Greg Kasavin, those 3 were t
