You Must Think First, Before You Move

So, after recording the podcast (which will be up later today), I sat back down at my desk and prepared to dig into some more Dark Sector. Upon getting my 360 dashboard on, I was greeted with a new contest that I was not prepared to handle at all.

Yes, that’s right, it’s the CHESSMASTER LIVE: HIP-HOP WEEKEND. There’s a free gamer picture, which I was hoping would just be a bishop wearing fat gold ropes, but alas, it’s the logo of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation, which apparently actually exists. As expected, their website features a photo of the RZA holding a wrestling-style championship belt.

Seeing the amazing dashboard graphic left me totally incredulous, and I immediately grabbed a camera to snap off a few shots, just to make sure it was really happening and so I could prove I saw it when people started calling me crazy. I was all prepared to get all snide about it, but between seeing the picture of RZA with that belt and seeing that they’re doing it for the youth, I think I’m going to not just run off at the mouth like a total ass.

What other games do you think would benefit from a Hip-Hop Weekend? Aside from free Method Man skins for TiQal, obviously.

Hmm… How about Audiosurf? In Halo 3, annoying pre-pubescent kids could be singing Low by Flo Rida.

Haha, a championship like this only comes around every thousand years or so. I would definitely participate in this if I had the XBL game but real, normal chess is good enough for me.

Portal, I think, would lend itself favourably to a hip-hop weekend. What with GLaDOS having already treated us to her scintillating robot tones, she must be itching to bust some hot rhymes over a sick beat. And when GLaDOS starts rapping about how she’s gonna do this and do that- dude, unlike 99% of those other story-book gangstas out there, you know she means business.

A puzzle game called “Grill’ed” that plays like your typical Bejeweled/Tiqal/Zuma game but consisting of teeth, colored gemstones, platinum, and the enemy - saliva.

    To Jason:

I think it’s an inspired idea. Bringing games to audiences that they are not traditionally marketed to is the sort of thing you don’t expect from corporate America.

I believe the humor found in it was more because of the picture that the marrying of Hip Hop Culture and the traditionally not-so-cool Chess Club created in our minds, and what other kinds of outrageous pairings we could think of.

Hasn’t anyone seen “Searching for Bobby Fischer”? Watch it and become educated about the many different “sects” within the world of Chess. There is definitely an inner-city style of Chess play that is very fast in nature (speed chess) and highly “stylized” (many African-Americans take ownership of this style). Adding Hip-Hop really isn’t that much of a leap (spicing it up for appeal), and after all didn’t the hook work. Looks to me that many non Hip-Hoppers checked the site out.

Check out the movie though, Lawrence Fishburne plays the speed chess mentor that helps the young prodigy break from the preconceived notions of “how chess is played”, thus liberating his mind to achieve a higher level of play.

Very Bruce Lee/Kung-Fu (the series that is, age showing here) in nature or for the young pups in the pound, very Jedi.
