Giant Bombcast 04-15-2008

It’s Nintendo week on the Giant Bombcast as we discuss all the hot new games that were shown at last week’s media summit in San Francisco. We also discuss the return of Interplay, get angry at Wired and meddling marketers, and more! As always, you can send any questions to bombcast (at) giant bomb (dot) com!

Special thanks to Phil for providing all of the music you hear in the Bombcast. He’s currently on the road with his band Malpais, so if you like what you hear here, go check him out!

    Justice is served

    Source: kotaku.com
    Date: 4th April 2008

    ——————————————————————
When long-time GameSpot reviewer and editorial director Jeff Gerstmann was let go from the site last November—with sources pointing to his review of Kane & Lynch: Dead Men as the catalyst for his termination—fingers were also pointed at executive Josh Larson, VP of games at parent company CNET. Larson, who replaced former Editor in Chief Greg Kasavin, was implicated by anonymous GameSpot employees to have had the “church-and-state separation between the sales teams and the editorial team” “cracked” under his tenure. Whether the VP, Jeff’s supervisor at the time, was the key decision maker in letting Gerstmann go we can’t confirm, but we can confirm that Larson will be leaving the company next week.

Internal communication informing employees of the cut were forwarded to Kotaku last night, indicating that a “new management structure means that Josh Larson’s position as VP, Games is being eliminated and Josh will be leaving the company.” CNET announced last week that it would cut 10 percent of its work force, about 120 employees. We contacted GameSpot Editor in Chief Ricardo Torres to verify the news this morning.

Torres confirmed that Larson’s last day would be April 9, but declined to comment much further on the restructuring, citing the “internal” nature of the news.

It was clear that, at the time, Larson’s capabilities as editorial lead weren’t well regarded by some of the GameSpot staff. The anonymous “gamespot” commented at sister site Valleywag that Larson was “a suit […] who had no editorial experience and was only involved on the business side of things.” The anonymous commenter lamented that the presence of the sales team had become much more visible under Larson’s watch, with other contributors going on and off record with less than favorable comments of CNET management.

In the months that followed Gerstmann’s dismissal, GameSpot lost a sizable portion of its editorial staff, with reviewers Alex Navarro, Frank Provo, Ryan Davis, Brad Shoemaker and Jason Ocampo leaving for other, sometimes unspecified opportunities. Torres told us that GameSpot continues to bring on new editorial talent and plans to continue its coverage “with the same breadth and depth we have in our previous 11 years.”

I’ve seen Cheerwine around the south for a while, but it’s pretty rare. They must have had a deal with Pepsi or something in the late 80s or early 90s, (maybe to help them combat Cherry Coke) because I remember it showing up in machines for a while, but that doesn’t mesh with the anti-yankee sentiments.

This was a short one lads. I hope that you guys are going to do the same for up coming events, im very interested in which direction Midways are going after last year. Im finding the games industry a very fragile place at the moment. Loved your comments about the GDC and E3, if it was a 24hr party no work would ever be done, I think game players, should leave confrences to games developers and journalists as yourselves.

One request Jeff please dont scream on the GBC, I listen to it in my car and sometimes you scare the shit out of me. The last thing I want it to say on the coroners report is that I died due to a car crash brought on by Jeff screaming. Second thought that sounds like an awesome idea, scream away.

An FYI for those who do care about MKWii while the Wii Wheel is not the competitive play controller of choice, neither are the cube or classic pads. From what I hear the Wii-Remote and Nunchuck is the ideal as it gives you all the analogue control but tricks and wheelies are easier to pull off with the remote chuck combo.

I just finally had a chance to listen, anyway… at about 70 minutes into the podcast, you guys were discussing the location for E3 and that this year it was going to be at the LACC. Ryan, you were a little disappointed that it was going back there and your response was, “Well at least the Lakers are crap now so you don’t have to worry about playoff games…” Please stick to what you guys are very, very good at and that’s video games and the like. Please no sports. Last time I checked the Lakers were the #1 seed in the West have home court advantage for the Western Conference playoffs. It looks like parking may be an issue.

For those who said it was the first time they heard jeff say a f-word, well..you haven’t followed his work..not the first time and not the last..By the way, nice anger moments in the bombcast..I always loved you two shouting like hell..

And Ryan be careful with your words..you never know when you gonna hit a wound( talking about the Lakers incident in case you didn’t notice..don’t care..i’m not from us either so..the last time I cared for nba was when Jordan played..and I’m 18 )

I hope there’s a podcast this week. I’m sick of listening to the Hotspot cause all they do is joke about random topics they don’t really say what they think.
