Family Values in Video Games

On its own, Haze looks pretty alright. Developer Free Radical Design has made some intermittently solid first-person shooters with its TimeSplitters series, and the angry teenager in me still finds some appreciation for the game’s oppresive Huxleyian setting. Also, drugs.

But then Korn got involved, and now whenever Haze is mentioned, my mind immediately wanders to one of the world’s greatest press releases. Things only got worse today when Ubisoft announced that “Haze”, the Korn single recorded for the game, is now available for money.

They’ve also released a video of a live performance of the song, synergistically inter-cut with footage from the game. Sadly, Ubisoft is requiring age-gate nonsense to post the video, but all you really need to know is that Jonathan Davis appears to be wearing a skirt. Which is, you know, edgy. I wonder what his parents must think! As an alternative, here’s a bootleg-ass “video” of the song that Jeff found on YouTube, complete with custom intro. Enjoy!

Like Serjery15 says “This is definitely…Korn.” I guess I should just be grateful that there’s never been a Korn/Mortal Kombat krossover, as sickeningly logical as that seems. Knock on wood!

God i hate Korn, but what ever. as long as the game is good i could care less. I still say the NIN song The good Soldier would have been perfect for this game.

    Dude, WTF!?
korn??? at what stage did someone decide “hey man, we need something that will sell our game?”
“ow I know, let get a famous band to write a new song just for out game”
“great idea, who did you Have in mind?”
    “korn.”

ok, am i the only one who thinks korn should have nothing to do with this game. I think i said before but i will say it again. I dont want to play a Sci-Fi FPS where i am shootin’ at some bad guys and i have some lame ass Metal in the background. Couldnt they have just goten an orchestral sound track? thats all i want, ok i apreciate how they are trying something new or different but Korn??
anyway, i guess i will just mute the game when the Korn song comes on.

Remember when Nine Inch Nails got involved with Quake and there was a nailgun in it and the NiN logo on the ammo and we all thought it was awesome?

    Yeah.

This is the natural evolution of that as games get more corporate and the people with the cool ideas and good taste have less and less say in the process. “An over the hill band with name recognition wants to synergize with our latest SKU? Do you know how AWESOME this is going to look in our prospectus?”

If you need a modern example to the NiN/Quake thing, Johnathan Coulton writing a track for Portal. See those are talented people at Valve picking a musician who is both in his prime and appropriate for the subject matter.

Korn making shitty music and charging people for it? A video game publisher doing whatever they can to make a quick buck? Yup, just another day in modern society. The sad thing is that there’s a good a chance that someone somewhere may actually make money off of this.

Actually, there was a time when someone got Adema (third-rate nu metal band featuring Jon Davis’ half-brother) to do a song for Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. So the Korn/MK thing has already come about, in a weird, two-degrees-of-separation kinda way.

LOL That really is one of the worst guitar solo’s I’ve ever heard! There’s a reason why Korn never had guitar solos in their songs before. Maybe some of you guys never managed to get that far through the song? I used to love Fieldy’s weird clickity clackity bass sound back in the day, now I can’t understand how I could ever stomach it, it’s so annoying! It’s weird to think how big this band once were, I’ve not listened to them in years, but I’m sure the first couple of albums were alright? Maybe I just had no taste when I was 15?

Religion for me is a religion and the pope is the shits. I had to come up with that kind of prayer to hit up that kind of rush I get from the bible and I think we really crucified it.

    lols,

Yeah Korn was the band I used to listen to in middle school and not so much in High school anymore. Now being in college, I have no regrets in saying I used to be a Korn fan. I’m sure if I where to give thier new cd a try I would like something out of it, but i think that would just be for nostalgia reasons. Maybe just something about the band sining the same damn thing for over ten years and me actually having grown up over the past ten years, I just don’t feel as strongly about their songs anymore.

Ugh. Korn? They used to be semi-good. Then they went downhill extremely fast. It’s like the Deftones and AFI. First album, awesome. After that? Pure crap that got worse and worse.

If Ubisoft wanted some cred with metalheads, Slayer would have been a much better choice. Digging up an old Curl Up And Die track would have been even better. Or Dragonforce. Or… hell, Sarah McLachlan or anything would have been a better choice than Korn. Nu Metal sucks and everyone knows it. Except Korn and Ubisoft apparently.
