Xbox Brings Out the Big Gunns

While my initial appraisal of Microsoft’s plans to produce original (presumably premium) video content for Xbox Live Marketplace was less than optimistic, things are looking up following the revelation that writer/director James Gunn will be involved.

For those unfamiliar with the work of Mr. James Gunn, his style falls somewhere between Sam Raimi and Eli Roth–gross, but hilarious. He’s credited for writing the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead, as well as my #1 favorite Troma movie, Tromeo and Juliet. He also wrote both of the Scooby-Doo movies, but I choose not to hold that against him. Perhaps my favorite work of his is the truly inspired 2006 horror-comedy Slither, which he both wrote and directed. I could try to describe its awesomeness, but I’ll rely on this vile YouTube clip to get my point across for me.

And that’s not even the best part!

According to G4, he’s currently in the casting process for something described as being akin to Wonder Showzen and South Park, with “Girl in Bikini” listed as one of the roles he’s looking to fill. So, you know, it’ll be something classy. My only lingering concern now is that Microsoft will let Gunn see through his presumably pus-and-laff-filled vision.

If MS thinks that they’re going to get me to pay money for TV shows, when I already pay fifty dollars a year for live, they’re out of their mind. Between satellite, Hulu.com, and the rest of the internet, I’m pretty much covered when it comes to NOT paying per show when I watch TV.

OMG. Slither is so hilarious. And better than Dawn of The Dead, is Shaun of The Dead.

OMG!@ Ryan Davis might as well come out of the 360 fanboy closet. I bet he secretly works at M$. Did you see what I just did there? I wrote M Dollar Sign because Microsoft likes to make money so you should hate them.

Damn, nice… or at least it could be.

Also I am surprised your a Troma movie fan. Most of em are crap, as intended I suppose. But there are a few polished turds in the rough.
Such as Terror Firmer and Citizen Toxie being my favorites.

Poultry Geist - Night of the Chicken Dead looks like it is going to be good.

I’m a big James Gunn fan and Slither is one of the best gross-out horror movies I’ve ever seen. This pleases me. *pets cat*

Totally stoked. Gotta love James Gunn’s uncanny ability to create great characters and interesting (and hilarious) situations to put them into. Plus his blog is probably the best celebrity-ran blog out there.

The man’s gotta keep himself busy after getting dumped by the absurdly hot Jenna Fisher (Pam from The Office). Still a lucky bastard even if he doesn’t have her anymore.

This is exactly why I hate what has happened to horror films lately. Since the turn of the century basically, it’s become less about suspense and surprise and more about “hey, lets show the grossest crap we possibly can without getting an NC17 rating.” That’s not to say suspence horror does not exist anymore, it just isn’t getting the press it should. Take Vacancy for example. Few people have heard of it and if it weren’t for Starz, neither would I. Nevertheless, it’s awesome, suspenseful, and very unpredictable without relying solely on grossing the audience out for entertainment.
