A Variety of Downloads for your PlayStation Platforms

For those of you waiting long and hard for the PlayStation 3 version of the Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack, today is your lucky day. The maps are now available via the PlayStation Store for $9.99. That’s a full penny cheaper than the 360 version!

The pack contains four maps, and I happen to like it a great deal, so if you’re already playing COD4 or are looking for a reason to go back to it, I recommend you pick them up. Check out the review I wrote recently for the 360 version of these maps for more details.

Other paid stuff hitting the PlayStation Store today includes the PS version of R-Types, an expansion set for Eye of Judgement, the Army of Two SSC Challenge Map Pack, and a mess of songs for Karaoke Revolution, Guitar Hero III, and Rock Band.

Think that Army of Two download will breathe some life back into the PS3 version of the game? I was trying to find an online game of that earlier this week and it was D-E-A-D. Couldn’t find anyone in any mode. Can’t say I found that too surprising.

You can also find a PS3 demo for Iron Man and a PS3 and PSP demo of echochrome, the rad-looking Escher-style puzzle game. Download away!

CoD 4 maps and the echochrome demo for me. That is if I can pull myself away from Persona 3 FES first.

I’m pretty surprised that nobody at ALL is playing Army of Two online. It’s a major release that sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and the fact that nobody’s playing ONE MONTH after its release speaks volumes about the quality and quantity of games coming down the pike these days. It also makes me leary of picking up older games that had a significant multiplayer component. I’ve been waiting for a sale for Frontlines, but now I think it might be too late. Are people still playing that? It seems like a few games maintain long term multiplayer communities and most are just flashes in the pan, if that (I tried to play The Club online 2 WEEKS after release and couldn’t find anybody.)

I’m already used to these on 360. Each map is good but I love playing Search and Destroy on Creek, everyone always wants to skip it unfortunately. Get good at that one and you can play anything on SnD.

    @ Todd mcTodd

If WoW never existed, most games would have bustling online communities right now.
Even Unreal tourney 3 doesn’t have nearly as large a fanbase as it expected. Everyones playing
    World of Warcraft
    Counter-Strike Source / counter-Strike 1.6
    Call of Duty 4
    Battlefield Series

and thats it. god i only wish i were joking.

Echochrome “The Demo” is as good as I hoped, but unfortunately, what I expected has come true: It is hard, and I am not smart.

Hopefully with practice, I will get better at it, but I am taking so long to make my moves that I am “timing out”.

Still, I’m sure I’ll buy it when it drops, I’ve been looking forward to it since last E3.

I plan on buying the PC version too, should I wait for a “game of the year” edition to be released like they always do with COD? (one that includes all the new released maps)

I got the PC version of COD4 so this doesn’t really make any difference to me, but I hope they release the maps on PC soon.

I can’t really see Infinity Ward finding an easy way of making people pay for the maps on the PC (maybe through steam it could work) so I think they’ll wait a few months then issue a patch with the maps in there for free, this would be good because everyone could have the maps and it would be long enough after PS3 and 360 owners got them so it wouldn’t seem like they got totally ripped out of $10.

I think I remember reading on the Penny Arcade forums that the maps would be released for PC users for free.

The maps are also region-locked for some dumb reason.

The new expansion for Eye of Judgement is probably pretty cool. Unfortunately I’ve kinda lost interest in the game as of late.
Those who want a one of a kind game experience should check it out, but a warning first, it’s not for everyone.
I played the crap out of it when I first got it, but the novelty has worn off.

Well I see anything that helps pass time for the few remaining days until gta4 comes out is welcomed lol. And the cod4 maps are definately worth getting any cod4 ps3 owners.

It seems only really awesome games or games with a fanbase are going to be able to stay online, i do know that a lot of people were playing battlefield: modern combat forever, well until COD 4 came out.

    Confound it.

neither Echo Chrome nor Iron Man (either/nor or either/or? is it neither/nor, either/or - does anyone actually care?)

    what was I on about?

Oh yeah, none of those games is out on the EU store. And is it just me, or £7 sterling seem like being I’m being taken for a ride? They’re available for about 5 days before I have to divorce my wife and give up custody of my child so I can fit in REASONABLE play time on GTA IV for the forseeable future.

    Another question:

Echo Chrome lands as both a UMD and a Download right? GT5p was cheaper to download than buy on disc I think to make sense of the lack of a need to package / store / post anything.

Echo Chrome works on psp, but will it be compatible with the PS3 also? What I’m getting at is this - does this reverse the GT5p thing? If you download Echo Chrome do you get to play it on the ps3 at home, and then the psp on the train? And then if you buy the UMD, do you get the download for free? Can you export something to the ps3?

How midlessly confusing is gameplaying getting to be these days? And while I’m very much all for things that are ‘better’, but what happens when better isn’t really better?

How irritating is it when you think “I’m just going to have a quick jaunt on CoD4″ only to be forced to spend 15mins to 1h+ reading a book and occasionally glancing at a little line creeping across the screen. It’s like having a spectrum +2a again. Except the downloads crash more often (MGOb).

All these day one downloads kind of narc me as well. It’s like “here’s your game* in the usual manner, so show me the cash my good man” then you get home and it’s all “actually, we weren’t running exactly to schedule, so if you’d just hold the end of this tape while I stick this on we’ll be with you in just a minute”

*I say game, but they even did that with the console didn’t they?

Anyone else know what I mean?

I say all this, but I’m a blatant graphics whore. What I mean to say is I’ll forgive it every time.

If you had an answer to the Echo Chrome questions, that would be kind of class.

    @ Joe

the maps are region locked?.. so if i download’em with my EU acc they won’t work in my US acc?.. (or vice versa)….

Xenoc: Yes, I saw some disclaimer on the store stating it would only work with… and then the UE relase catalogue number.
