Overview
24: The Game is the third person shooter based on the popular television show 24 on FOX. The game was developed by Sony Cambridge and published by 2K Games. Its original released date was February 28, 2006 and was released only for the PS2 platform. As of this date no sequel has been produced or announced.Plot Overview
The plot for 24: The Game takes place between Season 2 and 3 of the television series. The story was written by Duppy Demetrius and the music for the game was composed by Sean Callery, both of which work on the regular series. The storyline bounces between the primary character, Jack Bauer, and four other key characters from the series (Tony Almeida, Chase Edmunds, Michelle Dessler, and Jack's daughter Kim Bauer). All five have intertwining connections to the same terrorist plot , they all eventually merge, and nagging questions that fans may have had about the show will be answered. Questions like where Chase came from, what happened to President Palmer after his assassination attempt, and what ever happened to that evil eurotrash dude, on the yacht, at the end of Season 1.The story begins with Jack, and a squad from CTU, as they forcibly board a freighter in L.A. harbor, a freighter they believe is carrying a dangerous gas called "ricin". Ricin is a poison gas that a group of terrorists plan to dump in the water supply. After thwarting the threat Jack discovers that the mastermind behind the attack is Peter Madsen, a former colleague of Jack's from his time in Special Ops. Madsen is disgruntled and has basically become a gun-for-hire. He has been hired by a terrorist group to ultimately procure uranium for an eventual arsenal of Middle Eastern nuclear weapons.
Before it's all over motivations are uncovered, and the plot twists, as several threads dangle. Chase Edmunds is undercover in Washington D.C. and discovers a plot to assasinate Vice President Jim Prescott, Tony Almeida has to stop a sarin gas attack in the L.A. Metro, and Michelle Dessler has to slow down a surprise attack on CTU headquarters, as Kim Bauer has to try and sneak to safety as a newly hired intern at CTU. All the while Jack tries to stop Madsen and uncover the true evil behind it all.
Gameplay
24: The Game takes place primarily from the 3rd person perspective with a focus on shooting mechanics. The game occasionally takes a break from gun play and will introduce other mechanics like driving, sniping, interrogations, stealth and light puzzle levels. All levels upon completion will give you an overall score on factors like accuracy, enemies killed, and property damage. Good scores unlock hidden goodies that can be accessed threw the game's opening menu screen.Shooting is done by pressing the R1 button, but pressing and holding the L1 button will take the player into an over the shoulder viewpoint for more accuracy. Weapons consist of a standard arsenal of pistols, machine guns, and shot guns, along with a sniper rifle and a stun gun. There is also a cover mechanic that allows you to take (and pop out from behind) different types of cover. Pressing the triangle button causes the player to go into a crouching "stealth" mode that helps detour attracting the attention of the various enemies.
Driving often involves getting to a certain place within a certain amount of time, completing a set of objectives, or simply escaping pursuers. It's standard driving procedure in these levels though because reducing property damage gains a better overall score and keeps the car functioning for longer. If the car breaks down the player can still commender a new vehicle by flashing his/her CTU badge at a passing motorist.
Sniping and stealth missions are very much mini games in 24: The Game as they tend to be very short and to-the-point. Sniping involves having CTU scan buildings for possible threats and shooting a set amount of those threats within a certain time frame. Stealth involves making it threw a room with minimal detection and sometimes involves minimal escort mechanics.
Puzzles consist of a maze mechanic that has you picking the correct path to the finish, while under a strict time frame. This puzzles is inserted in the game to simulate a circuit breaker, the diffusing of a bomb, or simply to unlock a door. The other puzzle is a "decrypting" mini game that is basically a color matching game. It randomly flashes different colors on the screen, the exact same colors that can be found on the PS2 face buttons. If you press the correct corresponding color more of the file is decrypted, eventually leading to a successful hack.
The final (and arguably most original) mini game is the interrogation segments. On occasion Jack will capture suspects and is tasked with trying to get vital information out of them. During these segments he can either press them hard, stay in the middle, or try to calm the suspects fears. This is accomplished by watching the suspects' stress levels and button presses on the controller. Triangle is the agressive choice, square is the middle, and the X button is used as the calming choice. Maintaining a balance is the key as being too nice will cause the suspect to gain too much confidence, but pressing too hard will cause them to curl up on the floor and cry for mommy.
