Atlus has announced plans to bring the incredibly cool-looking 3D Dot Game Heroes to North America. The From Software action-RPG has been out in Japan for a bit, but Atlus will be bringing it here on May 11.

As the game features all sorts of sly winks to gaming's pixelated past, it's drummed up a fair amount of online interest. Here's how Atlus is describing it:

About 3D Dot Game Heroes
A long, long time ago, the Dark King Onyx brought an age of darkness upon Dotnia Kingdom.  Only by the bravery of a hero with a legendary sword was Onyx sealed in an orb, restoring peace to the world.  But Fuelle, a powerful Dark Bishop, has stolen the orb, and with it, peace.  Dotnia requires a hero once more!  Can you live up to the legend?

Key Features

  • Ultimate retro love letter -- Seamlessly fusing new and old, the golden era of gaming is felt in every detail of this lovingly-crafted adventure. Eye-popping visuals capture the nostalgic charm of pixel graphics in cutting edge 3D. Simple, but deep action-adventure gameplay is a throwback to the 8-bit era. Veterans will find references and jokes that pay homage to the great games of yore.
  • Awe and adventure live again -- Embark on the next generation of classic exploration and discovery in a grand story-based quest. A hero sets out to gain the power of the six sages and the six orbs that protected the kingdom of Dotnia, which now stands on the verge of destruction.
  • Customize your hero -- When pixels are your building blocks, the possibilities are unlimited. Freely edit the look of your character, or design one completely from scratch, and then trade designs with friends via a compatible USB storage device. Your hero's blade is also upgradeable, letting you add length and width to create a sword that fills the whole screen!
The game will hit shelves at a discounted price of $39.99, which sure sounds reasonable. Here, look at some screenshots of this thing!

And so continues the tradition of Atlus being totally awesome. I wonder what kind of free shit they'll give way with the game.

 @JJOR64:
There was no rumors of it coming to 360. It was just some guy at From Software saying it wasn't impossible to be ported to the platform. The reason it was a PS3 game is because the game is extremely niche and has tons of references to old retro games and the PS3 was the right platform for it in Japan. If they were to port it to the 360 it would probably be just for the west, kind of like FF13. That being said, I don't think if this game has that massive fan base or appeal. I mean, Demon's Souls is brilliant in its own way and it has its fans and sold well for a game of its kind but not enough for From Software to go back and port to 360 or PC or something. I imagine Dot Heroes will have a similar reception, probably sell more just because it isn't super hardcore and has the pixel art look. Maybe sequels to these games could be multi-platform but then again From Software isn't known too much for that either.

For me, I just can't wait for it to come out...and for 40 DOLLARS? That's amazing. Atlus does it again.

I'm going to think about buying it, hell, I'm even going to buy it.
The thing could catch fire like Demon's Souls did if it reviews right.

What is this, 1999? Hopefully, they'll have some more modern trading mechanism (i.e. online over the 'net) when it releases.
The Artstyle looks fun.  Hope the gamplay will match

Yeah, the Atlus Faithful sent me an email about this news this morning, and I must say... this game looks fantastic!

I always wondered why nobody tried something like this, looks awesome!

@Dan_CiTi: Well, Demon's Souls can't be ported to anything.  Sony owns that IP entirely, it's as much theirs as White Knight Chronicles or Wild ARMs.

As for this game...well...the developers, Silicon Studio, said they could port it to 360 since the tech isn't very complex, but there are no plans to do so and it's entirely up to FROM Software to decide.  Considering how well it did in Japan so far (which is to say, not very), there's very little reason for FROM to spring for a 360 port that might eliminate any potential profits the game might have already brought in.  If it does well in the US, they might consider a late port, but honestly, it's a niche game and these kinds of titles rarely jump platforms as it is; the developers just don't have the money for it.

There are much more 360 owners in NA, so it would most likely sell more on the 360 here like pretty much every multiplatform game. But yeah, the developers first need enough money to make the port... but maybe it won't cost that much since they said the tech isn't very complex.

Great news. I wonder though, how come Nintendo hasn't sued From Software yet.

#33 Edited by Archaotic (31 posts) -
@xyzygy: "Like almost every multiplatform game" is kind of a misnomer.  A lot of Japanese-focused titles have started to sell more on PS3 in the US; Tekken, BlazBlue, and Street Fighter IV all did, as well as, oddly, Batman.  A game like this doesn't really appeal at all to the 360's core "shooter" userbase and it doesn't have any online functionality at all, so the "XBOX Live advantage" is missing.  It's a niche title among niche titles, so it's a question of funding; and as I said, since it didn't do particularly hot in Japan, FROMsoft isn't really going to be hurting to spend more money to develop an entirely new version of the game for a userbase that will completely ignore it.

After all, userbase isn't everything, what matters is market; there are a ton more Wii owners out there, but do they ALL buy games?  Does every Wii game outsell every PS3 or 360 game?  Nope, only the ones catered to the Wii's very specific market.

This one looks awesome, I'm going to pick it up the millisecond it's out.

Meh, aside from the loading screens and kitschy art style, the game itself is as unoriginal as the stuff it pays homage to.  I don't know if playing it is really worth the time when you can just play an old game for much less money.  I'm glad Atlus continues to be the gateway for the more eclectic games we'd likely never see or get horrible localizations of, but that doesn't mean I have to buy every one they bring over.

I love the load screens, but seriously, just look up shit on this very site if box art is what you want.

The screens remind me of an old 3DO game called Gaurdian Heroes from Micro Cabin.  Looks about as fun too.

@Seedofpower: Guess maybe they decided it was such a good dungeon it deserves it's own game :D
#40 Posted by Deusoma (3007 posts) -
@Archaotic:
Just thought I'd point out that Batman doing really well on the PS3 probably had something to do with the free PS3-exclusive Joker content. I know that's why I got it on that platform.

They don't really have a choice.  They know all everyone will do is make existing, copyright infringing, characters in dot form, and if there was some sort of online trade feature they'd be responsible for poicing it (LittleBigPlanet style).  By trading files via USB storage, From Software are making the models easy to get to on a PC, so it's really just intended to facilitate the trading of models on forums etc.  They're only trying to serve the community the best way they can.

God dammit! Now I know I have to buy a PS3. That's two games (both made by Atlus!) that make me want a PS3.

#43 Posted by gakon (1952 posts) -

This game has some bizarre pseudo-realism going on; find some videos posted of the game a few weeks ago and check out the water effects and such.

#44 Edited by MrKlorox (11209 posts) -

Looking at this game makes me think back to looking through magazines at the 3DO and its games way back in the day. The feeling is almost identical, mainly because I know probably I'll never end up playing it and it is on a fairly-niche system (in this region).

#45 Posted by Adamantium (885 posts) -

Wow this looks pretty fun.

I just sort of assumed that this was a downloadable game. I'm surprised that something like this would get a retail release.

Imported the game, if anyone is interested I posted my impressions on the forums a while ago.

Atlus is pretty much the company I expected to bring this game over here. Thank you for not disappointing me, Atlus. :)
