3D Realms Employee: "It's True"

Well, we've heard from Deep Silver, the company working on Duke Nukem Trilogy for PSP and DS. We've heard from Take-Two, the company that is/was to publish Duke Nukem Forever upon its completion. And now we've heard from Joe Siegler of 3D Realms, who posted up on the company's official message board last night with the following response:
"It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."
While this sounds like the sort of thing that might have been in the works for awhile, it certainly wasn't communicated to the entire staff ahead of time. Siegler had conducted a recent interview with a site called Tech HotDish that ran the day before, and also stated that he didn't know about the impending closure when that interview was conducted.

You'd think that, given the long and rough path that 3D Realms and Duke Nukem Forever have ridden on since its announcement back in April of 1997, I might have come to terms with the concept that the game might never come out. But for whatever reason, I'm completely shocked by the news. It had become a running gag for most, and I think that the impossible expectations of a game that's been in development that long wouldn't be kind to Duke Nukem Forever upon its release, to say the least. But, I don't know, as the game slowly started to resurface over the last 12 months, I had convinced myself that it would finally be released sometime in 2009. Heck, maybe it still will be.

There's probably still a final chapter to be written here, but after years of speculating about what, exactly, is going on with 3D Realms and Duke Nukem Forever, I'm pretty much out of ideas. So, instead, take a look at this poker chip, which I made my friend Dave dig out and photograph. These were given out back at E3 1998, where the first video footage of the game was shown. Back when it was running on the Quake II engine. When dinosaurs roamed the Earth.

#3 Posted by Bucketdeth (7938 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

#4 Posted by LordAndrew (13817 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

He's rippin'em a new one in heaven.

#10 Posted by Warchief (598 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Sorry no sympathy at all about this. They were working on vaporware for 10 + years, if any project took this long others would have been fired 8 years ago.

#11 Posted by CL60 (16906 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

They could still sell it.

#12 Posted by Media_Master (3283 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

What if another company bought it?

#13 Posted by FlipperDesert (1823 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Did I mention I was seven when this game was announced? Yeeeaaaaaah.

Its pretty pathetic. If they don't want to work, then 3d Realms shouldn't exist. Entire franchises have come and gone in the span of time it takes them to make this 1 damn game. Pathetic.

I just hope that someday when I have grand children, Duke Nukem Forever will still be in development, and they too can share in my pain.

#24 Posted by LordAndrew (13817 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Always bet on Duke!

#25 Posted by RHCPfan24 (8608 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

There must be a blackhole ripping through the world right now, sucking everything in it and vaporizing life as we know it. This is about to happen just because of this. Just because Duke Nukem Forever WILL NOT COME OUT!

#26 Posted by xplodedd (1316 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

duke nukem, I am sorry. I am truly out of words to say. but you took way too long, look even team fortress 2 finished its development. DNF, if was released, wouldn't look to great. from the images they have been releasing lately, it looks like a gears of war.

but you know what, fuck it, I hope i am wrong.

this is a sad day for videogames.

He's not only out of bubblegum now. Sucks to be Duke.

#30 Posted by Boiglenoight (474 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Exactly, exactly what Warchief said.  Who knows what the extenuating circumstances may have been.  Duke Nukem 3D was an awesome game for its time, but it wasn't so great of a product that warranted a sequel with a decade-long development cycle.

#31 Posted by SmugDarkLoser (4619 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Go figure.  The last game they released was the meh Prey and before that was....damn, I dunno.
They haven't exactly delivered much product.

#32 Posted by Shax (12 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

3D Realms going down is actually the best thing to happen to Duke Nukem. The game might actually get finished now if someone picks it up. Duke Nukem could have been a great franchise all these years but upper management at 3DR has made a train wreck of it, good riddance.

#33 Posted by supersatanic (56 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Even I thought it was coming for sure this time. But silly old me.....
Yeah, and what the HELL was so HARD about developing a good duke nukem game, anyway?? All,they had to do was make a decent first person shooter with good graphics,A.I ,cheesy one liners, some aliens and strippers wrapped in a completely over the top package with some decent multiplayer.
Something that most of which a new game does every week........

#34 Posted by Death_Burnout (3699 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

It is such an odd thing i agree. We joked for years, but now that this has happened, wake up call.

Whatever of it is left, i want it to see the light, i dont care how crappy it is, you can bet everything, that i'll fucking buy it!

#35 Posted by Hairydutchman (1035 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

It can't end this way!

#36 Posted by spiceninja (2987 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

I want to see the game. I don't care if it's only 1/4 done I still want to see it.

#39 Posted by dQuarters (178 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Let's forget this happened, then pretend Eat Lead was the new Duke Nukem game, and then promptly forget THAT happened as well.

#40 Posted by MeatSim (9315 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

I bet that Duke Nukem poker chip is gonna be worth a lot someday, especially now.

#41 Posted by BigBoss1911 (2254 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

They need to just release it.

#42 Posted by Napalm (9020 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

Dude, what the hell has happened...

#43 Posted by Reverseface (1221 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

I always bet on duke...until i lost my house, parrot and 3 legs...because i bet ALL ON DUKE.

#44 Posted by AndrewB (6873 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

I still don't think this means the end of Duke Nukem Forever. If anything, I think it has more of a chance of actually being released now than ever. Legal issues resolved, the development can be passed on to the developers of the Duke Nukem Trilogy.

#45 Posted by Raidy (21 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago

I think i may take my chip to Vegas and go ALL IN ON DUKE.

#46 Posted by InFamous91 (925 posts) - 4 years, 18 days ago
