Always bet on Duke.

3D Realms was a Texas-based video game studio, most famous for developing the Duke Nukem series of games. In 2014 the name was acquired and it now refers to a studio based out of Denmark.

I think this "aiming for perfection" is BS. They could be delivering Duke Nukem 7 by now with the time they took to do this game. I really have no pity for them, this would happen sooner or later because it is simply ridiculous.
What matter is iteratively improving. They could have released the Forever in 2001 and then improve it gradually after each new sequel.
Serves them right for pissing about. 3d realm could have put out five or six Duke Nukem games in twelve years but instead they wasted time and money on a project that ultimatly went nowhere. Thankfully with Take-Two holding onto the publishing rights one of two things will happen. Either 1) Take-Two will finish the game, publish it and try and get some of their money back, or 2) They will take Duke out behind the wood shed and put a merciful bullet between his eyes, Whatever happens however, the story of DNF will soon be coming to an end and good riddance to.
Its all a load of bollocks really.
Sadly, this is what happens when you making 1 game for 13 years. Revenue has to come from somewhere, and as a development studio, you need to release games to stay in business.
I fully expect Take-Two to switch developers, since they own the publishing rights to DNF.
and yet Diablo 3 is still expected to be one of the best selling games ever... lol... And its been in production longer ,an dprobably went through more iterations.
Why did you think it was taking so long?!?!??! They were probably being operated by about 2 or 3 guys left over who somehow managed to get a paycheck without anyone noticing and now they're finally getting fired.
Sucks that it's official, but Duke deserves the attention and love at a rate 3D Realms simply could not provide. Luckily T2 still owns the rights because they seem to enjoy making sequels.
Though the first video from 2001 looked fucking spectacular and full of innovation for 7 years ago, I don't think there was anything that hasn't become a staple of the genre today.
This is absoltuely terrible news for Gamers.
Back in the day, the FPS genre kind of branchedo into a few different forks and games were made that emulated either Duke, Quake, or later Half Life. Half Life, speficially, won out and we've seen almost nothing but Half LIfe inspired, and later Battlefield inspidre, FPS games for the past 8 years or so.
I was very much holding out hope that Duke would be the game to bring the old run and gun "story is not as important as you seem to think it is" awesomeness back to FPS games.
Wtf are you talking about? Diablo 2 came out almost 3 years after DNF was announced and Diablo 3 was first revealed in 2008.
This development team had so much potential (like Ion Storm). I mean you get a bunch of really skilled computer developer, mostly veterans in the industry and give them almost complete creative freedom to make games they want to make (also like Ion Storm). But then you manage the company poorly, none of their games are on time and are running huge budgets and the one game (Prey) they actually do make fails to succeed in tapping its full potential (*sigh* also like Ion Storm).
Fuck 3D Realms. TBH, after keeping their beloved fans waiting for over 10 years, applying delay after delay after delay (after delay...) giving false promises every time, it make me wonder why the never got out of business sooner.
Thus, I have no sympathy for these guys, at all, passionate gamers or not. Say what you want about not releasing games "until they're done," but when waiting THIS long resulted in almost nothing, you can't help but admit this was a waste of time.
Agrees with this :D
This is... this is just silly. It's been ridiculous for more than a goddamn decade. By now, this is a non-story. The development process for this game has looked like the cardiogram of a guy jacked up on meth since forever. Maybe if we stop paying attention to it, it'll go away. Or get made. I don't know. Either one works right about now.

If they haven't released the source code to the public, then it's just a matter of time before somebody with game programming talent with take it. Perhaps Bethesda will handle it? Look how well they brought Fallout back from the dead.
