Africa is a continent which is thought to be home to ancient humanity, and the birthplace of many advanced civilizations. Modern day Africa is home to widely varied cultures, languages, and landscapes. Due to the sheer size of the continent, the full range of climates is represented, from arid in the desert regions to tropical in the rainforests and savanna, with temperate grassland in the deep south.
In the English Language modern Africa is often split into zones for ease of clarification. North Africa includes countries such as Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt. East Africa encompasses such places as Somalia, Mozambique, and Ethiopia. West Africa includes Nigeria, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia, and Ghana. Central Africa includes the Congo. Southern Africa includes the eponymous South Africa, Namibia, and Angola. These are loosely defined zones, since there are few official agreements amongst African nations that constitute membership of one zone or another.
