Age of Empires III has similar gameplay to similar games in the Age of Empires franchise. Players start with one town center, a scout used to explore the map, and a handful of villagers. Villagers are one of the most important units in the game, as they not only gather resources ( Food, Coin and Wood), but they are one of the only ways (and the easiest) to build buildings in your civilization. Overtime, the player will gather more resources, build more buildings and build an army ready to attack there opponents.
One of the biggest changes to AoE3s gameplay is the introduction of Home Cities. As you earn points in game by doing anything (building, kill, etc.) you earn XP points. Once enough are earned, you can pick a card of something from your Home City. After a short period of time, you get what the card says for free (some cards do cost resources). There are many different cards, unlocked in different ages. Some may give you more resources, while others send soldiers or villagers, or even upgrade your civilization. Most cards can only be used once.
There are eight civilizations in Age of Empires 3. Each civilization has its own strengths and weaknesses and each civilization has its own unique units. There are other civilizations that are playable in the single-player campaign such as The Knights of St. John, John Black's Mercenaries and the United States of America, however these civilization are not playable in any other mode other than the campaign.
The main civilizations in the game are:

Ages
Ages are one of the things that differ AoE from other RTS. Ages are giant upgrades to your civilization that unlock new units, upgrades, allow new buildings to be made, and much, much more. An age upgrade can be used at anytime from the Town Center, but for a cost. All ages require a lot of resources, and many also require a goal to be completed, such as build a barracks or market. There are 5 ages in AoE3. They are:- Discovery Age (Players start the game in this age)
- Colonial Age
- Fortress Age
- Industrial Age
- Imperial Age
