A place where airplanes land a and take off, hopefully. Also where food is really, really overpriced, and intrigue always seems around the corner, at least in video games.

The name airport has within it a certain whimsy, since the name makes reference to humankind's seagoing past.  A port was originally only in reference to a place where seagoing vessels harbored, thus airport suggests that airplanes are, in a sense, vessels of the air.

Other languages are much more prosaic about what they call these locations.  Norwegian, for example, use lufthavn (literally air port), but the term flyplassen (the airplane place) is also used.
