Overview
Akebono Tarō, born Chad Rowan, is an American-born former sumo wrestler who now lives in Japan as an immigrant. He became the first non-native Japanese sumo wrestler to reach yokozuna, the highest rank in the sport. He retired from sumo wrestling in early 2001 due to injury.
Akebono subsequently joined the K-1 fighting promotion in 2003 as a means to pay off substantial debts, including those incurred from a failed restaurant business. His overall record in kickboxing and MMA was 1-11. In 2005, he transitioned into professional wrestling, and has since fought for a variety of Japanese wrestling promotions.
