Even on Giant Bomb user reviews they both get about 4 stars. I played the main game and DLC back to back and especially in the DLC I felt that the combat to story ratio was extremely unbalanced.

And after 10 hours the combat gets gratingly repetitive. DLC conclusion = set up for a sequel. Nothing important in the DLC apart from that.

and to have it stretched across two DLC packages is weird. Both are about 1 to 1.5 hours long.

The only thing new they added was the "things appear when you shine light on corresponsing words" Which gets run into the ground by the end of "the signal" and is then also ran into the ground throughout "The Writer".

It's just more Alan Wake, and I don't consider that a bad thing. Plus, one is free. I wouldn't consider them disappointing, and I'm sure it did what it sought out to do.

@Baillie: Both are free (or included in the package) on PC

Dunno about 360 but I heard they were both 560 MP

@NTM: It did do what it sought out to do, set up a sequel. However actually playing was a big fucking waste of time cause to be honest I don't give a shit and thought the original ending was fine, whether it would end there or a sequel would spawn from it.

@ItBeStefYo: Ah, okay. When I hear DLC I usually associate it with consoles, well that and I also associate Alan Wake with the 360.

When I purchased the game one of them was free. So I essentially got both of them for 560 points. The Signal was definitely better than the Writer, but they were both two of the best DLC packs available on the marketplace, along with Borderlands' DLC (minus Moxxie)

I'd back that up some more, Alan Wake as a whole was disappointing, especially in light of the Max Payne legacy they were coming off of and that we got a better Pacific Northwest mystery game that same year (you know what I'm talkin' about)

I found the story great, and the gameplay really fun. That was until it got really boring and repetitive. Sadness.

I agree. I loved Alan Wake on the PC to bits, but that kind of atmospheric story-driven game just doesn't work outside of the main campaign package. The DLC was a punch in the balls after the amazing core game, and American Nightmare was just a big meh.

What we need is Alan Wake 2.

@Kraznor: Yep. I saw someone say "Alan Wake = Deadly Premonition".

I corrected them by saying "Alan Wake < Deadly Premonition"

Alan Wake's motivation was always to find his wife who I couldn't give a shit about.

York's motivations changed throughout and when it came to Emily I really did care about what happened to her.

I liked AW for what it was but yes, the DLC was weak. I only played the first one though that came with the game as a code. Hated the level recycling from the main game and the broken nightmare world did nothing for me, so I skipped the second DLC pack.

The Writer was at least a lot better than The Signal. I really didn't like all the action oriented sequences.

Also, it ruined the perfect ending Alan Wake originally had.

@Baillie: The Signal is still free on 360. I bought the game this year.

At least the first one is on 360, and both are free on PC.

Also, the Alan Wake DLC is great.

I loved the first one, it was a challenge going through without dying for achievement. Oh man those possessed cars were the worst.

I loved the full game, however I stopped playing completely when I got to the bit in the DLC with the spinning house.

Yeah, it was. The gameplay had kind of worn out its welcome by the end of the main game and while the DLC tried to do some kind of interesting things with it, I didn't feel like it was enough. What's more the story just kind of dragged along and posed yet more questions without making the events as intriguing or clever as any of the campaign stuff. Whether it was the case or not I just felt kind of like I was being strung along for the sake of them making more money.

Not really. Once you realize that this is an old school-ish developer who cares about delivering a stellar campaign out of the box and not keeping you hooked with DLC, you won't feel the need for Alan Wake DLC. Only a sequel!

I loved the DLCs, just like I loved the original game, and American Nightmare. "The Writer" is the better of the two DLCs though, IMO. I never expected downloadable content to come with so many memorable events!
