The former Headmaster of Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Albus Dumbledore was one of the greatest wizards of all time and aided Harry Potter in ridding Voldemort once and for all.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (1881 - June 1997) was the former Headmaster of Hogwarts and considered to be one of the greatest Wizards of all time. His famous feats involve his defeat of Gellert Grindelwald, the discovery of twelve uses of dragon blood, his work with Nicolas Flamel and his part in the ultimate destruction of Lord Voldemort.

In the first and second film, Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore was portrayed by Richard Harris. Harris died between the second and third installments and the role was given to Michael Gambon who has played the character since. Dumbledore is very portrayed quite differently than from the books. In the movies he can be found more aggressive and intimidating. His appearance in the movie is also different, with his lack of his famous half-moon shaped glasses.

Dumbledore's Early Life

As a bright, gifted young scholar, Albus also experienced trouble at his household. His sister, Ariana, was a troubled, young witch who had trouble controlling her magical powers. One day, a group of Muggle boys saw her performing magic unintentionally. Scared and cocky, they attacked Ariana, leaving her mentally and emotionally scarred. Albus's father, enraged by this attack, confronted the boys and attacked them. His crime was revealed and he was sentenced to a life sentence in Azkaban, where he would later die.

After this event, Kendra (Albus's mother) took her remaining family to the village of Godric's Hollow, the same place that Harry Potter and his parents, James and Lily, lived as well as the famous wizard historian, Bathilda Bagshot, author of History of Magic. Kendra hid Ariana from the general populace due to her unstable magical powers. She rebuffed most of the neighbor's advances because of she was trying to protect Ariana from the dangers of herself and others. She did warm up to one individual, Bathilda Bagshot, who was the only person in the neighborhood who was on speaking terms with her.

Success and Tragedy at Hogwarts

As a student at Hogwarts, Albus found himself at first to be slightly discriminated because of his father's actions. Many people believed that he shared the "Muggle-hating" views of his father but they were surprised to hear of his kind, sympathetic view of the Muggle populace. He was an extremely gifted student, gaining top marks on his N.E.W.T.s for Charms and Transfiguration, becoming Prefect and Head Boy, winning the Barnabus Finkley Prize for Exceptional Spell-Casting, receiving a gold medal at the Ground-Breaking Contribution to the International Alchemical Conference in Cairo and becoming the British Youth Representative to the Wizengamot.

He gained many friends at Hogwarts and on his first day he befriended a child named Elphias Doge who was afflicted with a bad case of Dragon Pox. A somewhat slowminded character, Elphias reveled in being one of Dumbledore's best friends. He was one of the few people to know much about his family around the time the events took place. The pair planned on taking a grand tour of the world after school ended but on the eve of their departure, Dumbledore's mother, Kendra, suddenly died. The cause of death was found to be a outburst of magic that Ariana emitted uncontrollably, killing Kendra merely by accident. Albus then was made the head of the family and had to forgo the trip to tend to his remaining, broken family.

A lively bird in a small cage, Albus felt trapped and wanted to do more than care for his family. The remedy came through Gellert Grindelwald, the great-nephew of Bathilda Bagshot. He was as ambitious and almost as bright as Dumbledore himself, and they found a perfect match between each other. They shared ideas of Wizards reigning over Muggles for the "Greater Good," an idea that clearly contradicts a lot of Dumbledore's feelings later in life. Dumbledore, who has been revealed as a homosexual, was said to have had romantic feelings for Gellert. Grindelwald, who would later become one of the most dangerous Dark Wizards of all time, was despised by Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus's brother. Aberforth one day approached Albus and Gellert over the ignorance they were providing for their sick sister, Ariana. Gellert was enraged by this discussion and they started dueling. Gellert used an Unforgivable curse during this duel, but tensions were high between all of them. In the end, they found Ariana dead, hit by someone's spell. The torture of who hit her would haunt Albus for the rest of his life. After this event, Grindelwald fled the Dumbledore's and the country itself.

Dumbledore's Career at Hogwarts

Reeling from his sister's death, Albus joined the staff at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He became Professor of Transfiguration, or the art of changing the form of an object or person. He would later become Deputy Headmaster of the school and one of his jobs was to enroll children in the school, many unaware of their true magical nature. A leading example of this is when Dumbledore enlisted Tom Riddle into school at a young age. Unaware of his later, sinister nature, Dumbledore brought this troubled, gifted child to the world of Hogwarts.

When Headmaster Armando Dippet died, Albus took over the position and eventually held a tenure of over 50 years of service to the school. He would be known as the finest Headmaster the school ever had, sharing his warm demeanor with the rest of the school populace and entire Wizarding world. He was known to be gracious and forgiving. However, his flexible nature was only for the common good, not blind appreciation. This is shown by his rejection of Tom Riddle's application as a Professor at Hogwarts on two separate occasions. Tom, a brilliant student, would be an easy choice but Albus was aware of his dangerous and sinister activities he participated in the recent years. According to Dumbledore, Tom placed a curse on the Defense Against The Dark Arts teaching position, the one he vied for, and no teacher would hold the position for more than one year from that year forward.

During this time, Dumbledore also faced a greater challenge. His old friend, Gellert Grindelwald, was terrorizing Eastern Europe and was considered one of the Darkest Wizards of his time. Many people wanted a powerful wizard to take him down, and they all considered Dumbledore the greatest choice. However, Albus was wary of seeing his old acquaintance in combat, not because he was afraid his skills were insufficient (they weren't) but because he was scared of the fact that Gellert could reveal who truly killed Ariana to him. If Albus truly killed her himself, he may more damaged than Grindelwald would become. Nonetheless, Dumbledore could not ignore the danger of his old friend anymore and faced off against him in a legendary duel. To all who witnessed, it is said to be the greatest duel between two wizards of all time. At the time, Grindelwald was equipped with the Elder Wand, the legendary wand that is one in three of the Deathly Hallows. Despite this noticeable advantage, Dumbledore still defeated Grindelwald and took the Elder Wand for his own upon his victory. Instead of boasting it like most hotheaded wizards do, however, Dumbledore lived a peaceful, nonviolent life from then on, with a few exceptions. The Elder Wand would later fall hands to Lord Voldemort and then Harry Potter, who would retire it from use upon his eventual, natural death.

The First Wizarding War

Albus founded the influential organization entitled The Order of the Phoenix in order to combat Lord Voldemort's rise to power years later. As the only wizard Voldemort feared, Dumbledore was a natural fit for the leading title. Other members of the group included James and Lily Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and Frank and Alice Longbottom. They suffered heavy casualties including the Bones and Prewitt families and later the Longbottom and Potter families.

Years later, Sybill Trelawney auditioned for a job at Hogwarts for the Class of Divination. Dumbledore, unimpressed with the subject and deeming it unnecessary for a young Witch/Wizard's education, passed on it. However, Trelawney, either out of desperation, coincidence or possibly fate, spoke of a Prophecy in which one who has the "power to vanquish the Dark Lord"

approaches, born "as the seventh month dies." Severus Snape, a spy for the Death Eaters, was listening in to the conversation from outside the door and relayed the information to Lord Voldemort. Snape later learned from Dumbledore that this Prophecy was referring to either the Potter or Longbottom family and when both Voldemort and Dumbledore chose the Potters as the subject, Snape was heartbroken and summarily switched sides to the Order of the Phoenix, aiding Dumbledore in protecting the Potters, or more specifically Lily Potter, his true love, from harm. Dumbledore agreed and had the Potters under the protection of the Fidelius Charm. Dumbledore believed the Secret-Keeper to the Potters was Sirius Black when in fact it was secretly switched to Peter Pettigrew. Peter revealed the information to Lord Voldemort and Voldemort was able to penetrate the Potters defenses. On October 31, 1981, Lord Voldemort infiltrated the Potter residence, promptly killing James Potter on the first floor, ascending the steps to the second floor, listened to Lily's pleas for the life of her son, disposed of her in a similar fashion and then cast the Killing Curse on Harry Potter, only to have the curse backfire. This was because of Lily's loving sacrifice to her son, which caused a protection on him that prevented him from being killed. At this moment, Voldemort made Harry a Horcrux (a fragment of his soul), and because Voldemort already had six Horcruxes keeping him alive, he did not die but only lost his physical form, where he would be in exile for another 13 years.

Dumbledore made it a priority to assure Harry's safety for his whole life, as he was aware that Harry was "The Chosen One" and a Horcrux himself. He tasked Hagrid to retrieve Harry from the wrecked Potter residence, and

Hagrid rode his motorcycle (actually Sirius Black's) to Dumbledore and McGonagall, leaving him to live with his only remaining family, the Dursleys, for the next 10 years. Even though Harry would be faced with near-constant ridicule at the hands of Vernon, Petunia and Dudley Dursley, he was safe and protected from Voldemort's wrath. Snape was also part of this effort to protect Harry because he wanted to avenge the death of his true love, Lily Potter, by ensuring the safety of her only child. Dumbledore made Snape Potions master at Hogwarts so he would be at school when Harry was there. He also defended Snape during the Ministry of Magic trials for Death Eaters that resulted after Voldemort's disappearance, stating that he was a member of the Order and working against Voldemort.

Right before the Potters' death, Dumbledore asked Lily and James if he could borrow the Invisibility Cloak that James has had since a young age. During his brief time he spent with Gellert Grindelwald at a young age, he and Gellert became fascinated with the Deathly Hallows, a group of magical objects that any person who possess all three will be the "Conqueror of Death". The three objects are the Cloak of Invisibility, the Elder Wand and the Resurrection Stone, a stone that can bring back anyone from the dead. So, when witnessing this Invisibility Cloak that James possessed, he was overcome with fascination and realized that this was a true Hallow. He had given up on the pursuit of the Hallows year before but his curiosity couldn't help itself when he truly had two Hallows, the Invisibility Cloak and Elder Wand. Upon the Potters' death, he was the rightful possessor of the Cloak. He would later give the Cloak to Harry in his first year, as Harry inherited the Cloak from his father.

Harry Potter At School

Dumbledore was pleased to know that Harry Potter was safe and sound, if a bit battered, upon his arrival at Hogwarts. Dumbledore did not want to reveal many secrets of Harry's life or importance to him at this young age but took careful steps at making Harry acquainted at the school and prepared to start facing greater challenges. During Christmas time of his first year, Dumbledore gave Harry the invisibility Cloak anonymously and advised him to "use it well."

Throughout the first year, other significant events happened involving Dumbledore and Harry. Dumbledore's longtime, ancient friend Nicolas Flamel feared that the Sorcerer's (Philosopher's) Stone was in danger and wanted Dumbledore to keep it safe. He, along with other teachers such as Professor McGonagall, set many security precautions on it and Dumbledore kept the Stone, which grants immortal life and can procure gold, contained in the Mirror of Erised. The Mirror magically held the stone in a way that would only give it to someone who did not intend on using it which would prove useful later in the year. Dumbledore grew suspicious of Professor Quirrell (Defense Against The Dark Arts) and asked Snape to keep a close eye on him.

Harry would be the one that would save the Stone from evil use later in the year. Lord Voldemort had taken residence inside of Professor Quirrell's physical body, on the back of his head. He wanted the Stone to achieve immortality and his physical form again. His plans were ruined when Harry retrieved the Stone himself because he didn't want to use it and Harry was able to touch Quirrell's face and burn it to near-ash. This was caused by the power of Lily's sacrifice to Harry. After this event, Dumbledore explained to Harry that Voldemort showed no mercy to anyone, including his followers. When Harry asked Dumbledore why Voldemort tried to kill him as a child, he opted not to say, telling him that he would learn with age. The prophecy that Trelawney foretold was perhaps too much for his young mind to handle.

During the next year, many other significant events occurred that would bring Dumbledore and Harry closer to Voldemort's wrath. The Chamber of Secrets was opened by Ginny Weasley who was possessed by Voldemort at the time and did it unknowingly. She also would write ominous messages on the wall in blood, again under the influence of Voldemort. She became in this state because Lucius Malfoy slipped Tom Riddle's diary, a Horcrux, into Ginny's school bag and she would later write in it, revealing many dark, personal secrets, which only fueled the soul of Voldemort trapped inside. Through these actions, she became possessed by Voldemort.

Dumbledore was temporarily removed from the position of Headmaster at Hogwarts because of the opening of the Chamber. He would later return when Harry revealed that the diary of Tom Riddle was behind the opening. Harry, as well

as Ron and Gilderoy Lockhart, would go down to the Chamber of Secrets and Harry fought the basilisk guarding it at the bottom, stabbing it with a sword procured from the Sorting Hat. He also found a pseudo-ghost version of Tom Riddle down in the Chamber. At that time, Harry did not know that Tom was in fact Lord Voldemort but Tom did by jumbling his full name "TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE" to show "I AM LORD VOLDEMORT." Harry realized that his diary was vital to his existence and stabbed it with a Basilisk fang. This severely damaged the diary to the point of non-repair and tore Tom Riddle apart, unable to harm Harry.

When Harry returned, Dumbledore explained to him that he was given certain traits of Voldemort's after the rebounding Killing Curse 11 years ago. This explained his burning in his scar and his ability to speak Parseltongue, the language of snakes. Dumbledore also noted that Harry would have probably gone to the Slytherin House because of many of his qualities but, as Dumbledore explained and Harry presumed, choice was the final factor. Harry wanted to go to Gryffindor instead and Dumbledore said, "it is our choices, rather than our abilities, that reveal who we truly are." Harry's true stance as a Gryffindor was reaffirmed when he pulled the sword out of the Sorting Hat, actually the Sword of Gryffindor, because only a "true Gryffindor" can retrieve that sword.

During Harry's third year in Hogwarts, the threat of Sirius Black, Dementors and the question of guilt or innocence pervaded the atmosphere. Sirius Black, a criminal known for killing Peter Pettigrew and seven other Muggles as well as betraying the Potters to Lord Voldemort, escaped from Azkaban, the high security Wizard jail, the only one to ever do this. No one was aware of his true innocence at the time, and the entire Wizarding world, including Dumbledore, was concerned about his near-impossible escape. Mr. Weasley personally warned Harry that he is in "grave danger" and must "not go looking for Black." Harry, perplexed at these words of advice, grew very cautious of Black but curious as well.

Throughout this year, various revelations of Black were revealed. Harry eavesdropped on a conversation between Madam Rosmerta, Ministry of Magic Cornelius Fudge, Hagrid and Professor McGonagall discussing the connection between Sirius Black and Harry Potter. Sirius was revealed to be Harry's godfather and someone who was trusted very dearly by both James and Lily. After this information, Harry vowed to kill Black. Meanwhile, Ron's rat, Scabbers, goes missing.
Harry, later in the year, gazed at the Marauder's Map, a map that shows the locations of every human being in the school at the specific moment. He found a person named "Peter Pettigrew," who he knew to be dead by Sirius Black. He roamed the castle at night trying to find Pettigrew and approached the exact spot he is on the map, only to have no luck at finding a person. However, Lupin intercepted him and asked why he is out so late. Harry said that he saw Pettigrew on the map which Lupin declared as "impossible". However, the map never lies.

Good day.
Good day.
In a final encounter in the Shrieking Shack, Sirius Black confronted Harry, Ron and Hermione along with Professor Lupin. Here, Sirius revealed that Ron's rat, Scabbers, is in fact Pettigrew in Animagus form. Through a transformation, this was proven true and, instead of outright murdering him, Harry told them to bring him to the castle, where he can suffer the Dementor's Kiss. Unfortunately for them, Pettigrew escaped and Sirius and Harry nearly became soulless through the Dementor's Kiss, only to have a brilliant, radiating Patronus in the form of a Stag ward off all the Dementors.

In the hospital wing, Dumbledore approached Ron and Harry and told them that two innocent lives can saved if Hermione's time-turner, an object that can make someone go back in time, was used. The two traveled about 3 hours earlier, where they can save Buckbeak, Hagrid's Hippogriff wrongly sentenced to death. Harry also saved his and Sirius's life by performing an extremely powerful Patronus charm, possibly the most impressive spell performed by someone his age. After this, he freed Sirius from his cell and let him go free with Buckbeak. Dumbledore was pleased with the results in the end, but must act silent because time manipulation is not encouraged in any shape or form in the Wizard community.

The Return of Lord Voldemort

The fourth year of Harry's school career beckoned an even darker mood than the year before it, with the return of the darkest force the Wizarding world has ever known.

The Triwizard Tournament occurred this year, a celebration of unity between three schools and a representative from each. Fleur Delacour was chosen as the Beauxbatons representative, Viktor Krum for Durmstrang and Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts.  However, the Goblet of Fire, the magical device that chooses the participants, also selected Harry Potter as a champion, when his age and the fact that he did not enter kept him from participating. However, he was forced to continue because there is no debating the cup's validity.

For the third and final task of the Tournament, the champions must navigate a huge, psychologically-stressing maze to find the Triwizard Cup. Harry and Cedric found the cup but it ended up being a Portkey, transporting them to a graveyard in Little Hangleton. Here, Peter Pettigrew approached the two carrying a creepily deformed version of Voldemort, the size of an infant. Peter killed Cedric just because "he was there" and proceeds to restrain Harry to a nearby tombstone. Here, Lord Voldemort was reincarnated to his full self by using some of Harry's blood. The two engaged in a duel that created an extremely rare and strange occurence: the cores of Harry and Voldemort's wands react in a way that causes Harry's wand to contain some of Voldemort's magic and regurgitate it back out. This is known as "Priori Incantatem". The clash between "Avada Kedavra," the Killing Curse, and "Expelliarmus," the disarming spell, made spirits of people Voldemort has killed reappear, including Cedric and Harry's two parents. They talked to him and said to let go because their protection would shield him from harm's way. Harry released the spell and ran back to the Triwizard Cup, transporting him back to the entrance of the maze where the Hogwarts students and teachers greeted him victoriously. With Cedric's dead body in hand, the mood quickly turned solemn when it is revealed that a student was killed and Harry proclaimed to Dumbledore that Voldemort is back.

Dumbledore waas convinced that this may be true, but Mad-Eye Moody quickly shuffles Harry out privately, bringing him to a room and questioning him about what happened. When he started acting strange and aware of too much information, Harry was revealed that this is not the real Mad-Eye and actually Barty Crouch Jr., a Death Eater and son of Barty Crouch Sr., the recently deceased head of Magical Law Enforcement. He had been drinking Polyjuice potion to remain in Mad-Eye's form, and the real Mad-Eye was in a very deep trunk in his office.

After this, the return of Lord Voldemort was certain. Dumbledore reformed the Order of the Phoenix, with members such as the recovering Mad-Eye Moody, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Nymphadora Tonks and Sirius Black aware of the situation within the hour.

The next year had very few occurrences when Voldemort made himself known to the general public, but the fear and/or doubt of his return caused a lot of anxiety and distrust between Wizards and Witches. Dumbledore was sure of his return but tried to distance himself from Harry for most of the year, wary of the bond that Voldemort and Harry shared.

Early in the year, Harry and his cousin, Dudley, were attacked by Dementors that flew in to their neighborhood of Privet Drive. Harry used the Patronus charm to save himself but was later notified that he was expelled because of improper use of magic. Dumbledore arranged for a hearing instead, where he stated his case and convinced the majority of the jury to side with the fact that Harry was using the charm in a life-threatening situation, an exception to the law. The Minister of Magic, Cornelius Fudge, was firm in believing that he had not returned, as well as the deplorable judge and later teacher, Dolores Umbridge.

The Ministry, trying to keep Voldemort musings to a minimum, undermined Dumbledore's position of Headmaster and eventually attempted to arrest him because of Harry's secret group of students learning defensive spells in order to prepare themselves against Voldemort. This group, entitled Dumbledore's Army, was not formed or supervised by Albus, but he claimed full responsibility for its operation. However, Dumbledore insisted he would not "go quietly." Instead, he summoned Fawkes and exited, as Kingsley put it, in "style".

Dumbledore would return shortly after at the Department of Mysteries battle in the Ministry of Magic. When he got there, Bellatrix Lestrange had just killed Sirius Black and Voldemort had cornered Harry. Of course, Dumbledore came to the rescue and a battle of epic proportions ensued. Despite Dumbledore's prowess, Voldemort managed to escape, but not before possessing Harry through Legilimency. Harry, overcome with the grief of his dead godfather and the sight of his loving friends, was able to use love to rid Voldemort of his soul. Voldemort shortly left after that, but not before being seen by the Minister of Magic himself, flabbergasted to see the one person he had been insisting was a myth to be back after all. Dumbledore was reinstated as Headmaster of Hogwarts, his rightful position, and Dolores Umbridge and Cornelius were viewed negatively by many.

Dumbledore's Final Year

Dumbledore and Harry
Dumbledore and Harry
Aware that another clash would occur with Voldemort fairly soon, Dumbledore started to prepare himself and Harry for defeating Voldemort once and for all. To do this, Dumbledore started to collect memories from certain key figures in Tom Riddle's life such as Bob Odgen, Morfin Gaunt, Horace Slughorn and Hokey, a house elf. Harry and Dumbledore viewed these memories throughout the school year, learning various aspects of his life such as his troubled childhood and vile relatives, objects that he would most likely use as Horcruxes, and the startling discovery of how many Horcruxes he ever made. The last discovery was contained in a memory that was tainted by its originator itself, Professor Slughorn. Harry had to get close to Slughorn and retrieve the untarnished memory. A fair bit of luck was used to get it, as the Felix Felicis that Harry used can account for. When Harry and Dumbledore finally viewed the memory, they found out that Riddle has been wanting to split his soul into Horcruxes at a young age, and not only one Horcrux but actually seven. A soul becomes unstable enough to create a Horcrux after one murders someone, but a inordinate amount of murders must be made to create seven. Slughorn was so ashamed that he revealed this information to Tom Riddle that he altered the memory to account for his shame.
Dumbledore after learning of the Horcruxes

Now that the two knew that there were Seven Horcruxes to find, they had to find them. Thankfully, two of them had already been vanquished, one being Tom Riddle's diary from the Chamber of Secrets and the other Gaunt's Ring, which Dumbledore found in the Gaunt shack, the house his mother lived in. There were four others that Dumbledore knew about that he shared with Harry: Helga Hufflepuff's Cup, Voldemort's snake, Nagini, Salazar Slytherin's locket and a possession of Rowena Ravenclaw, later to be revealed as her lost diadem. The seventh one was unknown to Harry but Dumbledore knew all along that the seventh Horcrux was, in fact, Harry himself, formed when Voldemort's soul became so unstable and when his curse backfired that Halloween night.

Gaunt's Ring was very well-protected by a dark curse Voldemort cast himself on it to protect it from harm. Dumbledore was, later admitting himself, foolish and put the ring on, also aware that the ring is one of the Deathly Hallows, the Resurrection Stone. He did this because of his desire to see his family again, but instead he was afflicted with the curse that Voldemort set upon it. Dumbledore quickly returned to Hogwarts where Severus Snape, a skilled Wizard in medicine and healing, contained the curse to only Dumbledore's hand but he still gave him a deadline of only a year to live. Dumbledore came to the conclusion that his death was near, and he tasked Snape to be the one that kills him, to save him from greater, prolonged suffering and subjecting Draco Malfoy to be a killer.

Dumbledore was aware of another Horcrux's location, the Slytherin locket hidden in a cave. Tom Riddle had visited the cave while at the orphanage he spent his early years at and terrorized his fellow orphans. He deemed this a suitable place for one of his Horcruxes and placed the locket in a basin in a middle of a black, cold lake. Inside this basin was a magical, emerald-colored potion that could not be summoned or scraped out, but only drunken to diminish in volume. When Harry and Dumbledore visited this cave, Dumbledore told Harry to give him this potion scoop-by-scoop even if he may scream in protest. Harry did so but watched as Dumbledore grew faint and weak and screaming in pain. He would scream "Kill me!" and "Please don't hurt her!". It was later interpreted that Dumbledore was

reliving his worst memory, the death of his sister and the guilt and painful curiosity if he killed her himself. Another side effect of the potion was a burning sensation that caused severe dehydration. Because of this, he demanded water and Harry could only get water from the surrounding lake. Reaching into the lake to retrieve water, he was grabbed by an Inferi, a zombie-like creature that is possessed by a Dark Wizard, and was almost killed by the swarming crowd of undead. However, Dumbledore, despite his extremely weak state, was able to fight off the Inferi with a giant firestorm of epic size and escaped successfully with Harry.

Upon arrival via Apparition to Hogwarts, Dumbledore and Harry are greeted by the ominous Dark Mark over the Astronomy Tower of the school. The pair goes to the tower investigating the matter but Draco Malfoy appears, disarming

Draco reveals to Dumbledore that he let the Death Eaters into the school through a Vanishing Cabinet that he mended throughout the school year, the only foolproof method for undetected admission. He also reveals, as Dumbledore already knows, that he has been assigned by Voldemort to kill him. Dumbledore explains that he has not impeded on those efforts throughout the years because he knows that Voldemort would kill or harm the Malfoy family if they were not successful. He then suggests to Malfoy that he can protect him and keep him from harm if he changes sides. Malfoy, under severe emotional stress, insists that this is his job but still cannot summon the strength or courage to kill his target. At this moment, various other Death Eaters arrive at the top of the tower, including Severus Snape. Snape approaches Dumbledore and Dumbledore quietly pleads with Severus. Carrying through with his task for Dumbledore and keeping on the right side with the Death Eaters in the process, Snape performs the Killing Curse on Dumbledore, killing him instantly and sending him falling down the Astronomy Tower onto the ground below.

Harry, lifted free of his paralyzing curse, pursues Snape and the other Death Eaters through the school, where a battle between them and other students takes place. Harry pursued Snape onto the grounds, calling him a coward and trying

to fight. Snape, a more powerful Wizard, deflected these attacks effortlessly and actually advised Harry of what he was doing wrong. The Death Eaters and Snape escaped and left Hogwarts in a state of shock. Harry goes to Dumbledore's body and finds the locket with a note inside, stating that someone by the initials "R.A.B." took the original Horcrux and supposedly destroyed it. Harry was even more distraught that the reason for Dumbledore's weakened state that caused his death was for nothing. A funeral for Dumbledore was held shortly after in which many prodigious Witches and Wizards attended, such as the Minister of Magic. Dumbledore's body is wrapped in a purple cloth, carried by Hagrid and placed in a white tomb. A dramatic display of fire and arrows sends the tomb underground. This closes Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts and his last, as the next year he is dedicated to completing Dumbledore's task of finding and destroying the remaining Horcruxes.

Legacy and Afterlife

After his death, Dumbledore, like all Hogwarts Headmasters, had a spirit of himself live on in a portrait in the Headmaster's office. Like most magical portraits, the person encased can speak and share knowledge with other portraits and people. The next Headmaster, Severus Snape, communicated on a frequent basis with Dumbledore's portrait, who gave him advice on what to do next to ensure Harry's success. For instance, Dumbledore told Snape to give Harry the Sword of Gryffindor, and to so secretly, while in his portrait state.

The popular and inaccurate Daily Prophet reporter, Rita Skeeter, wrote a biography of Dumbledore's life, called The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, that was met with controversy but new looks at the life of Dumbledore. The tone was vile and very negative towards the wise wizard, although it did open new discussions about his life. For example, the possibility of his sister being a Squib, a person with non-magical abilities born to magical parents, was raised and the book made it seem that Dumbledore didn't care for his sister and left her to die. There was a slight sliver of truth in this, as Dumbledore felt trapped by the needs of his sister when he could be doing bigger and better things. However, he still cared for her and the death of her, which he is not sure if he caused, haunted him for the rest of his life. Another thread of speculation that resulted from this book was his relationship with Gellert Grindelwald. At the time most of the Wizarding world was unaware of their connection before their epic duel, but Rita let it be known of their relationship as young men. She revealed the letter that Dumbledore wrote in the dead of the night, explaining how Wizard rule over Muggles would be "for the greater good." He did in fact have these feelings at a young age, but his fight with Grindelwald that ended with his sister's death would shatter these thoughts for the rest of his life. Rita accused Dumbledore of delaying his final confrontation with Grindelwald because he still cared for him when, in fact, it was because he was afraid of whether or not he knew who actually killed his sister.

Dumbledore resurfaced in the final act of Harry's seventh year. When Snape was killed, he gave his memories to Harry who viewed them in the Pensieve. In these memories, he found out about Snape's love for his mother, Lily as well as the fact that Harry was a Horcrux of Voldemort himself. Dumbledore presumed this himself and told Snape that the protection of Harry is his priority.  Dumbledore appeared yet again, after Lord Voldemort hit Harry Potter with the Killing Curse for the last time. Harry Potter was in limbo between death and life and he appeared in what appeared to be nothing. He looked around and it seemed to be an empty King's Cross Station. A crying, pathetic-looking figure was cowering in the corner and was actually one-eighth of Voldemort's soul. Dumbledore appeared in the happiest state Harry had ever seen him in, congratulating Harry on his victory and they had a thoughtful and emotional chat for a time. During this discussion, they talked about things such as the Deathly Hallows and Dumbledore's young obsession with them that resurfaced later in life as well as his relationship with Gellert Grindelwald and the guilt he had over his family's struggles. He refers to himself as a fool and gets visibly emotional, crying because of his self-hatred. Harry tries to reconcile him and forgets about many of his gripes against Dumbledore that he developed over the year. Dumbledore further explained the connection between the wands of Harry and Voldemort as well, saying that Lily's protection for Harry lived on between their wands and that Harry's acceptance of death made him much more brave than Voldemort ever was. The fact that part of Voldemort's soul was in Harry also made Harry perform incredible acts of magic that saved Harry's life in Little Hangleton and over Little Whinging. In the end, Dumbledore gave Harry two options: to die and move on or to return back to the living and finish Voldemort. Harry, naturally, took the latter choice and returned.

Back in the living, Harry was able to play dead for a time and then return to Hogwarts with the rest of the Death Eaters. The entire remaining student and teaching populace came to see his dead body and were emotionally torn apart by the death of their hero. However, a distraction occurred and the fight resumed, and Harry sneaked away with the assistance of his Invisibility Cloak. During this fight, Molly Weasley killed Bellatrix Lestrange after spouting a few choice words and Voldemort was dueling Professors McGonagall and Slughorn and Kingsley Shacklebolt simultaneously. Harry then revealed himself to the applause and acclaim of the rest of the Wizards and Witches. Harry and Voldemort had a tense discussion over who is the true master of the Elder Wand, which turns out to be Harry. Voldemort doesn't believe this and is furious when Harry asks him to feel some remorse. He casts the Killing Curse at Harry, who in turn casts the Disarming Curse, and, as Harry predicted, the Elder Wand that Voldemort possessed could not kill its true master and rebounded, killing Voldemort once and for all. Harry was swarmed by the students and teachers around him who were ecstatic at the death of the Dark Lord. Harry then goes to the Headmaster's Office and sees Dumbledore, tears running down his eyes in happiness. Dumbledore congratulates Harry on this final victory and Harry tells him that he decided to leave one of the Hallows, the Resurrection Stone, in the forest in a place he doesn't know where, never to be seen again. Dumbledore believes this is a great idea and Harry uses the Elder Wand to repair his broken wand. Harry is the only person to ever unite all the Hallows, and Dumbledore, the once desperate seeker of them, agreed wholeheartedly with him.

Personality and Appearance

Albus Dumbledore had the typical look of a great, wise wizard, more in the vain of Merlin. He was tall and skinny with long, white hair and a bushy beard. He is known for his great, twinkling eyes of a brightest blue. He shared the same

eyes with his brother, Aberforth, and, when angry, his eyes could scare the darkest of Wizards such as Voldemort himself with their blazing gaze. He also had a long, crooked nose that was shaped that way, according to reports, because his brother punched him in the nose at their sister's funeral, proclaiming it was his fault she was dead. In addition, he would wear many different robes of the most spectacular designs, from dark gray to purple.

Dumbledore was considered to be the most powerful Wizard in the world, even more powerful than Lord Voldemort. According to Severus Snape, only a fool would question Dumbledore's greatness. He used his power for good, offering a kind, optimistic outlook on life and not using his magical prowess for evil. He would not boast or flaunt his great magical ability, like many others did, and this is one of the reasons that he was one of the longest keepers of the Elder Wand.

He saw the good in many people and would come to their assistance, especially in employment at Hogwarts. Sybill Trelawney was not considered a great Seer by others and even Dumbledore, but he hired her for a position because of gift of prophecy and the goodness that lied in her heart. Rubeus Hagrid was another example, as he did not exceed in academics and was actually expelled from Hogwarts but Dumbledore gave him the position of Gamekeeper because he had no where else to turn, no family to go to. in addition, Remus Lupin, a werewolf, would normally be banished from regular society because of his condition but Dumbledore defied the possible backlash the public would present and hired Lupin as Defense Against The Dark Arts Teacher. He saw goodness in all these people and let them show it within and beyond their tenure of work.

Dumbledore also realized the power of love, as he displayed in many instances. He knew that love was the greatest power of all, and the one, true force that can defeat Voldemort. He knew that Harry Potter lived that fateful night when he was a child because of the love of Lily's sacrfice and the protection it held. He also loved his family very dearly, even if they were mangled to the point of no repair by the time he grew such desires for them. Dumbledore, when looking into the Mirror of Erised, told Harry that he saw a pair of woolen socks because a "man can never have enough socks" but was only covering the fact that he saw his whole family there, living and dead, together. The death of his mother and sister, the imprisonment of his father and the estrangement him and his brother experienced would affect him very deeply for the rest of his life.

Dumbledore also had a quirky sense of humor and a penchant for certain sweets. He would engage in lighthearted jokes even in dire times, and he did so to make people feel comfortable in his presence. He also loved candy, such as gum drops and Chocolate Frogs, and loved Rasberry Jam. He was also a fan of knitting patterns.

Dumbledore, as revealed later, was a homosexual. He developed a loving relationship with Gellert Grindelwald, who was the same age, during his youth. He not only loved him but admired his ideas and abilities. After the fatal fight they engaged in that resulted in his sister's death, however, Dumbledore was heartbroken and lost most if not all the emotional relationships he had with him before. Later in life, it is unknown of the other relationships that he engaged in. It is known, however, that the relationship between Harry and Dumbledore was not sexual or romantic in any way. He only cared deeply about Harry and assured that he was ready for his ultimate battle against evil. Harry, even after some of his frustrations with Dumbledore, viewed him as a great man, one of, if not the, greatest. Harry named one of his sons Albus Severus, in honor of both Hogwarts Headmasters.

Magical Prowess and Abilities

  • Magical Expertise - Albus Dumbledore was said to be the most powerful Wizard of all time. He was feared by the Darkest Wizard there ever was, Lord Voldemort, and he defeated another, very Dark Wizard, Gellert Grindelwald, in a fantastic battle. He was considered a force of nature even by his enemies and his friends and admirers revered him. Other skills he could perform include the following:

  • Genius-level Intellect: In addition to possessing great magical strength, Dumbledore was a undisputed genius. While previous career accomplishments such as the "Twelve Uses of Dragon's Blood" show his superior intellect, nothing truly displays Dumbledore's genius beside his planning, before and after death, for the end of Lord Voldemort. His strategy toward bringing down Voldemort was almost immaculate, and he trained Harry and manipulated Snape is such well-planned ways that Voldemort finally fell, and a lot of credit can go to Dumbledore, even when he was dead by that point. He was clearly the brightest character in the series and used his mind to benefit those around him.
  • Patronus Messaging: Dumbledore created a method of communication via the Patronus Charm. He found a way for one's Patronus Charm, which takes the shape of an animal such as a weasel or stag, to speak in the caster's voice and deliver messages to other people. All other members of the Order of the Phoenix were taught this ability and they are said to be the only ones who know who to use it.
  • Occlumency/Legilimency Expert:  Dumbledore was known to be able to decipher people's thoughts, almost read their minds, to know what was bothering them or what they had on their mind. He used this to his advantage and at the comfort of others to make himself relate more easily to others.

  • Dueling Expert:  As in many different occasions, Dumbledore was known to be an expert at dueling. The battle between Dumbledore and Grindelwald was said to be the greatest duel ever fought between Wizards, and Dumbledore defeated him even when he was wielding the Elder Wand. His fight with Voldemort at the Ministry of Magic is also legendary. He caused much damage to him and, though Voldemort fleed in the end, made an impact on his confidence.
  • Invisibility:  As said when discussing The Deathly Hallows, he was not interested in the Invisibility Cloak because he could create such a powerful Disillusionment Charm that rendered this unnecessary. He also was able to wordlessly detect people who were invisible with the spell Homenum Revelio
  • Wandless/Speechless Magic:  Dumbledore could perform extraordinary spells without the aid of a wand and, in some cases, without saying anything at all. He was able to save Harry from falling to his death during his third year at the Quidditch game by performing the powerful spell Arresto Momentum without a wand. Also, he was able to traverse many of the defensive spells set at the Horcrux Cave without the aid of a wand. In addition, he could produce hundreds of objects (such as sleeping bags) or light candles without speaking a word. As mentioned previously, he could also wordlessly detect people who were concealed in invisibility as well.

  • Fire Magic Mastery:  Dumbledore's signature element was fire, as shown on various occasions. During his battle with Voldemort, he used fire many times to fight him. In addition, he protected himself and Harry from the Inferi by using extremely powerful fire manipulation spells. He was also able to produce fire that caused no harm to objects or people but was shown as a purely magical occurence, such as in his first visit to Tom Riddle. His signature animal, Fawkes the phoenix, his pet of sorts, was formed through fire and aided him at various times when he was in need. One such occasion is his escape from the Ministry officials trying to arrest him, wherein Fawkes appears and transports Dumbledore away through a burst of fire.
  • Potioneer:  Dumbledore was a gifted individual at making potions and had some of his work featured in the journal, The Practical Potioneer
  • Multilingualist:  Albus was well-versed in various magical languages such as Mermish and Gobbledegook, the dialect of Goblins. Although he wasn't born with the ability, he could recognize

    Parseltongue, the language of snakes.
  • Apparition/Disapparition Expertise: Dumbledore mastered the art of Apparition, magical instant transportation. He never lost any composure when going through the expanding and contracting darkness and would often resume conversations once out of Apparition as if there was no disturbance at all.
