    A Shooter With Charm

Alien Hominid is a stylish little side-scroller shooter which found it's way from a flash game on New Grounds to a home on consoles. The best way to describe Alien Hominid is Metal Slug meets Contra meets Invader Zim. Graphics are entirely hand drawn by Dan Paladin whose style is somewhat akin to Jhonen Vasquez. I mention graphics first because that's what most people will notice, this ain't a typical shooter!

Most of the elements of a normal shooter are here, powerful guns, loads of enemies, and difficult (on a rare occasion, frustrating) gameplay, even on the easiest difficulty setting. Thankfully, Alien Hominid is generous with credits and you can start a game from any stage you've completed, so even the worst players should be able to see the game through to the ending. Side scrolling run-and-gun action is broken up by the occasional flying level where you control the Hominid's ship. The control in flying levels can be a bit annoying at first, but once you get the hang of it they'll be a breeze.

There is a plot in Alien Hominid and it fares a bit better than the typical shooter. Cutscenes are carried out sans dialog which actually works well. The game opens with our hero (or anti-hero, depending on how you look at it) being shot down by the Feds and then having his ship taken hostage, leaving him stranded on Earth. He is then swamped by Feds and gleefully blasts his way through them with the assistance of the Fat Kid (as the manual refers to him) who somehow has access to high tech alien weapons which he shares with the Hominid.

Action is spread out over three main areas, The US, Russia, and Area 51. These areas are divided up into levels which are all unique. In the first two stages alone you'll go from blasting enemies on foot to jumping from moving car to moving car (all of which you can enter and drive) on a highway.

Though it may have a few drawbacks (namely difficulty) the pros far outweigh the cons with Alien Hominid. Shooter fans would do good to check this game out, as would anyone looking for a unique and hillarious gaming experience.
