    Alien Swarm

Game » consists of 1 releases. Released Jul 19, 2010

A freeware top-down co-operative shooter where a squad of marines must investigate and prevent the spread of a rampant alien infestation. It was originally a total conversion for Unreal Tournament 2004 before its team, hired by Valve for other projects, completed it as a side-project.

So since this is a source game...

You can totally switch it to first person mode!

By default it's top-down, so there are no textures for the top of the maps, but it really changes the feel of the game. I wouldn't recommend playing this in a random stranger game though. You lose the tactical view and will probably die a lot.

    Still pretty fun.

    Found this at  http://www.ripten.com/2010/07/21/play-alien-swarm-in-first-person-sam-n/

Alien Swarm, the delightful and free top-down shooter from Valve that we reviewed yesterday, is playable in first-person mode via a few entries in the game’s developer console. If you were put off by the top-down viewpoint, perhaps this could entice you in.

Shrimpsess on the Steam forums has put up a list of useful console commands for the game, including the method of playing in first-person. Here’s the relevant info:

    firstperson

    asw_hide_marine 1

    asw_controls 0
First one enables firstperson mode, second one hides your marine so you can see, third one changes the camera controls to be more FPS like.

To enable the console, go to Options > Keyboard > Enable developer console. Then hit the “`” key on the keyboard (~ in the US) – the one to the left of the “1″ key in the top left. Then enter each of the above commands to set first-person mode on.

I think the game started as a  UT 2004 mod but became a Steam game.

So for those of you who do try messing around with the console, but want to turn it off and don't know how, simply type the console commands in the same fashion, except change a command and the values.

Turn on FP mode                                          Turn off FP Mode (Default)

firstperson                                                      thirdperson  (This works in pretty much any source game. Try it out on L4D2 or any other Valve FPS)

    asw_hide_marine 1                                     asw_hide_marine 0

    asw_controls 0                                              asw_controls 1

Of course if this is a little too complicated, you can just exit back to your desktop. Load the game back up and everything should be back to the way it should be.
