Sega's Asked Yet Another Studio to Develop an Alien Video Game

Posted by patrickklepek (1688 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

With Ridley Scott returning to the Alien universe with the is-it-or-isn't-it-an-Alien-prequel Prometheus, it's not surprise Sega is ramping up its efforts to capitalize on the license, too.

Work reportedly continues on Gearbox Software's squad-based Aliens: Colonial Marines, while Creative Assembly--yes, the Total War dudes--are separately working on an Alien game, Sega revealed today.

The news broke when UK government minister for communication, culture and the creative industries Ed Vaizey send a tweet out about visiting Creative Assembly and seeing the game. That's not exactly traditional rumor territory, so Sega's hand was forced.

Sega then confirmed the game to CVG.

== TEASER == Creative Assembly is best known for strategy games, but with Sega making direct comparisons to the Dead Space franchise, an action game seems likely. Creative Assembly isn't completely foreign to the genre, having worked on Viking: Battle for Asgard. That one was not exactly well received, however.

It's clear the Alien game is a big deal for the studio. Creative Assembly's website has already been updated to reflect development on the Alien project and disclosing this is a brand-new division. "New team," reads the hiring call-to-arms on the company's website. "New console project. Alien IP. Now hiring."

Also, hey, Prometheus better not suck.

That's a lot of Alien for Sega...

Gotta juice that license for as long as you have it. Wish they would take another shot at the RPG, but that ship has sailed forever I guess.

Dead Space mixed with Alien sounds like it could be an excellent game. PLEASE BE EXCELLENT

Sega has a long history of forcing the Creative Assembly to develop games outside their RTS wheelhouse. Perhaps you remember that PS2 game Spartan: Total Warrior?

The fun part about Alien was that it created such an oppressive, isolated atmosphere.

I doubt they will replicate that.

Jesus, I never realised before, but apparently I live about 10 miles from where Creative Assembly is located!

This could be awesome. Staying hopeful.

Creative Assembly should stick to strategy games.

#17 Posted by Jimbo (9090 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

Ha, Ed Vaizey MP has no respect for your embargos.  At least he didn't say it looked shitty I suppose.

I'm extremely excited for the prospects of Prometheus. Ridley Scott has quite an opportunity for an Avatar-like outpour of buildup. Let's just hope it's a better sci-fi film.

Total War developer making an Alien game... What in blazes...?

Honestly in the current market  it seems like a Dead Space action heavy approach really is the only way to approach this thing.  But I would prefer a game that's smaller, more focused on maximizing tension, exploration and atmosphere than action thrills, ie Amnesia The Dark Descent or a game like Myst.  The Aliens shooter experience is so over saturated in todays market that I think we could do with an Alien game that's more of the first movie experience, less of the adrenaline filled Cameron sequel.

ALIENS!!!

So, can Matt Rorie talk about Aliens RPG yet?

#23 Posted by Xdsk (268 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

Please be a decent aliens game, im sick of this franchise being butchered by shoddy game releases. More tension less balls to the wall gung-ho action!

It's Ridley Scott. Prometheus won't suck.

#25 Posted by Sarnecki (638 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

Clearly you haven't been following Ridley Scott's recent output.

@Olivaw: *points at Robin Hood*

Eh, Robin Hood wasn't that terrible... as a sequel to Gladiator.

As far as can be ascertained, Prometheus is set in the Alien universe, and it is a prequel... or sorts.

Talk is that the script has wildly diverged from the original idea and gone in a different tangent, now set to be told in two parts, with the meat of the original treatment being used as a frame for the first film, Prometheus; a kicking off point. All speculative, but hugely interesting at any rate.

Regardless, Aliens have been spotted on set, so my one 'stipulation' is already thoroughly covered. To what extent they'll appear, I do not care.

Colour me super-fucking-excited.

Edit: Oh, yeah! the game. Em, hope to hear more. Yeah, that'll suffice.

Robin Hood was originally called Nottingham, and it was about the Sheriff tracking down this dangerous radical criminal named Robin Hood.  It was an interesting take on the legend and I guess they were forced to go a more routine route.  I only hope Prometheus has Ridley Scott with his heart in it as opposed to Robin Hood Scott.  Same goes for the game.

If someone made a good Alien game I would probably buy it. That's as far as I'll commit.

#33 Posted by fox01313 (4760 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

I remember the Viking Battle for Asgard game being a bit average but not that bad of a game, just didn't quite grab me to want to keep playing it after diving into it one day.

On a bit of a tangent, I think AVP2:Requiem might just be the worst film I have ever seen. It is beyond garbage.

#36 Posted by Cold_Wolven (1801 posts) - 2 years, 1 month ago

Huh...maybe instead of Creative Assembly making an action game for the franchise they should stick to their strengths and make an overhead strategy game since that could be cool maybe.

haha, i actually prefered that to the first AvP film, i cant remember why now cos i havent seen either in a long time, but the first AvP was total complete garbage to me, whereas i sort of remember being mildly entertained by the sequel and its cheap b-movie style glory

@Olivaw: True, i should have pointed to "A Good Year" and "Body Of Lies" as well... though mainly at "A Good Year"

Also like to note That he's my favourite director but he's nowhere near faultless.

I hope it'll be good. I doubt it though.
