Aliens: Colonial Marines Finally Escaping Gaming Limbo in 2012

Given how much I don't care for Alien 3, I don't mind that Gearbox Software and Sega are essentially telling David Fincher to 'eff off in today's long-awaited updated on Aliens: Colonial Marines, calling the project "a true sequel to James Cameron’s classic Aliens."

Sega's killed off Alien projects in the past, so it's no surprise many had assumed the worst when so long passed without an update on the shooter. With a is-it-or-isn't-it Alien film coming next year, a prequel of sorts from the masterful Ridley Scott, the game is coming back to life.

Aliens: Colonial Marines sounds like what we'd been hearing in the past, but yeah, reading about drop-in, drop-out multiplayer across a squad of four has me...uh, excited again. You'll also get to customize your marine with "get perks, new weapons and new looks for your squad."

Series fans can look forward to exploring Hadley’s Hope, the Sulaco and LV-426.

What's less fun is learning we'll be waiting a while to dig in; Aliens: Colonial Marines isn't scheduled for release until next spring. Fiiiiiine.

If this has anything to do with the Alien franchise it'll likely suck HARD just like all the movies do.

It's game over, man.

#8 Posted by SSully (4129 posts) -

I can't wait. Four player coop should be a ton of fun. In Gearbox I trust!

#9 Posted by McBEEF (360 posts) -

Gearbox is awesome, and the aliens movies and the first 2 games are awesome. This will hopefully rock.

#10 Posted by Grail2oblivion (5 posts) -

Alien 3 was definitely not David Fincher's fault...would be unfair to tell him to eff off...

#11 Posted by fontainefellow (171 posts) -

FUCKING FUCK YESSS!!!!!!!!!

I am urinating in excitement.

#12 Posted by White_Silhouette (470 posts) -

If they make it Marines vs Aliens in a L4D2 style of game. It will kick some ass.
If not- I will still probably check it out. Loved AVP2

Good news indeed.

We'd better get back, 'cause it'll be dark soon, and they mostly come at night... mostly.

Visit the ip that is shown in the teaser and use father as hostname. There is about 10 seconds of extra ingame footage in the trailer shown on the page near the end of the vid.

I honestly thought this game was dead. I guess I was thinking of the other SEGA Aliens game.

#17 Posted by chilipeppersman (1146 posts) -

OOoooOOOOooo yeah. Finally a good looking alien game. the old ones get old fast  O_O

#18 Posted by Piranesi (452 posts) -

I was hoping for Sonic vs. Aliens to be honest ...

#19 Posted by RandomInternetUser (6789 posts) -

Man... such good news.  4 player co-op is the best mode for an Aliens game where you play as the Marines.

That trailer is so good.

#22 Posted by Klaimore (945 posts) -

Yep next spring when the game will be canceled

#23 Posted by fox01313 (5063 posts) -

Might be good, still turned to the idea that this game could not be that much fun thanks to the latest AvP game.

#24 Posted by Belonpopo (1823 posts) -

Even if it sucks, I will buy this just to bankroll the next Alien movie.

#25 Posted by djames216 (363 posts) -

Just in case anyone didn't see this news about the new Alien film that isn't, here it is.  At this point, I would put money on the new aliens Game coming out before a new Alien(s) film.

#26 Posted by Scotty_Gun (23 posts) -

Sounds like another "bug hunt" to me...

Fantastic, looking forward to this one.

Exactly. Anyone that doesn't know the story behind that film should look it up, it's pretty amazing what some directors are forced to put up with.

Also, I'm not all that hot on this game. Borderlands was a huge disappointment in many ways, and I was really looking forward to the Obsidian Alien RPG.

Have been waiting a really long time for this but I'm certainly willing to wait some more. Its just good to know that it hasn't been dropped, not much has really been released since Randy Pitchford came out in 2008 and stated that the game was not cancelled like the rumours were speculating.

For anyone who didn't follow the game closely before, it is essentially a squad control FPS much like Gearbox's Brother In Arms franchise.

It was supposed to be a fairly slow moving game in that you would move from area to area, until you  discovered danger (using a classic 'Aliens' motion detector) you would then need to find a room to take shelter in, using tools such as door welders to slow down the onslaught of Aliens. The Aliens would always eventually get in, but using your available tools you are able to funnel them into particular areas enabling you and your team to take them out one or two at a time rather than attempting to fight them in large groups. Although I should add that all this information is from 2007 and may not longer be applicable.

A proper Aliens game? Just point me to the person I give my money to.
I've been following this since the announcement through the long long development limbo.
I honestly can't think of a game I've been as exited for in years.

#31 Posted by barkertron (82 posts) -

Sorry for the bad geekiness... but aren't Hadley's Hope and LV-426 the same place? And wouldn't it be an impossible location given what happened at the end of Aliens?

#32 Posted by Tordah (2471 posts) -

Can't wait to see some gameplay footage of this.

#33 Posted by fentonalpha (819 posts) -
@m0rdr3d:   You're trying too hard, troll subtler.
#34 Posted by SensuousLettuce (105 posts) -

I say DIYAMN!

#35 Posted by McBEEF (360 posts) -

If the gunplay is like the original AVP then it will be awesome.

When I blast a xenopmorph with my pulse rifle i want that thing to BURST. Arms and legs all over the place and a twitching tail after death were the touches that made that original game awesome.

And all the original gun and tracker sounds of course.

About time, I was worried Gearbox canned this. The trailer is very intriguing and I can't wait for some game play footage.

lol Nolan North strikes again :P

Sega:  We don't make games as good as we used to, so we'll just make movie-tie ins now.

#40 Posted by briangodsoe (487 posts) -

It's pretty sad that a teaser like this that shows nothing gets me that excited because of some name dropping. When the voice starting saying things like, "Burke" and "Ripley". Then state that they're going in to fucking Hadley's Hope? Yes!

#41 Posted by wafflez (523 posts) -

I just pitched a tent...

#42 Posted by AhmadMetallic (18955 posts) -

They mostly come at night

Mostly.

#43 Posted by Azteck (7449 posts) -

Is this the game where they had the motion tracker and that stuff?

#44 Posted by MisterChief (831 posts) -

The fact that Alien 3 sucks has nothing to do with David Fincher and everything to do with Fox.

#45 Edited by Gooddoggy (409 posts) -

So is this game gonna be a stand-up fight, or another bug hunt?

Edit: ah, someone beat me to it.

#46 Posted by Gnubberen (762 posts) -

So it's Left4Aliens? well that sounds pretty good to me.

While your statement is entirely true.

"a true sequel to James Cameron’s classic Aliens."

Is a pretty sick burn.

Really tired of trailers with no actual gameplay. Any chance Giantbomb would stop posting these? What is the value of them?

The difference between a teaser and a trailer seems to be lost on you.

As for the value, they let fans know the game is still on track to come out.  If they're spending money on marketing, they're confident the game will be coming out, which means they're spending money on developing.  It also lets them communicate a certain look and feel about the game that they may not be able to do with in game footage because the game is still months or years from release.

Lastly, Giant Bomb is a site dedicated to video games and video gaming news.  You may not see the value in some of the stories or videos they post but that does not mean it is off topic for the site.

If this game turns out to be what I wished Alien 3 was when I went to see it...  well, that would be just wonderful.  Then I could pretend all of those sequels were just fever dreams.
