Checkpoints In action games, checkpoints are points where a game will autosave and restart the player upon death. In Racing games, checkpoints will add time to a countdown clock and give you information about your race time in comparison to your opponents. |

Conservation Don't use that med-pack unless you're really low on health. Learn to conserve either money, items or ammo in games like these because you never know when you'll have the chance to get more. |

Cults Don't drink the Kool-Aid and watch out for those guys in monk's robes. Cults don't necessarily have to be evil or out to destroy the world, but it seems in video games that they usually are. |

Cutscene A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement. |

Darkness Darkness is used in games to restrict access, increase tension, or just to set a mood. Often the player has access to a light source that can mitigate its effect. |

Demons Demons are creatures of varying size and shape, usually from hell, known for killing everyone and destroying everything in their path. |

Destructible Clothing The wear and tear of a character's outfit as he/she receives damage. Usually used to titillate and excite. |

Swarming Enemies Enemies that are small, deal relatively low damage, and have low health, but make up for it by attacking in large numbers. Examples include Flood infection forms from Halo, Trites from Doom 3, or Crawlers from Resistance: Fall of Man. |

Synthesis Synthesis involves combining items to in order to solve puzzles or gain some other tangible benefit. Common in adventure games, synthesis puzzles often force the player to combine items in bizarre ways in the hope of creating a new item that will help them progress. |

Tension Being given a set limit of time to figure out a puzzle, or being chased by a slowly advancing serial killer while trying to find a place to hide. Heavy use of tension-filled moments can add to a games atmosphere, but can just as often become downright frustrating. |

|
The Locked Door It's the developer's go to guy. If they want to steer a player in a given direction they'll lock an in game door and force the player to find a way to either unlock it or find an alternate route. |

Third-Person Perspective The player character is seen at a distance from a number of different possible perspective angles. There is generally a movable camera but it can also be in a fixed position. |
