I hit the forums and people love the game, but its getting so many bad reviews. If I played the Bourne identity and damnation, I can play this to the end, no matter how glitchy it is.

haReviewste it is not a word

#3 Posted by raidingkvatch (1130 posts) - 3 years, 15 days ago

As far as i can see it's getting mixed review, averaging to middling reviews (65 on Metacritic) which is probably about what the game deserves; it's my sort of game and I'm enjoying playiong it, but reviews are supposed to be for all gamers, lots of people probably weren't too interested in AP to begin with, so they'll see a 3 star review, and just continue not bothering with the game.

The bad reviews are mainly due to its shortcommings, like bugs, deficient ai...  But in a little while i'm dabble a bit with it, and see for myself.

That's like some subliminal shit you're pulling in the topic title.

I think it sounds awesome, the choice stuff sounds like it's enough to put up with the jankiness.

The game is shit, but I love it so.

Obviously, if you look at forums dedicated to Alpha Protocol most people are going to have positive things to say about the game. If they didn't, why would they be on the forums to begin with?

Giant Bomb is a little different because every forum is meshed together into one. But look at sites like GameSpot/GameFAQs, the forums are flooded with apologists and fanboys. Or like, the Alpha Protocol official forums or something. It's completely dependent on where you look.

But also people who bought the game and were disappointed, as well as people who just plain love to hate. The fact Alpha protocol forums are full of positive things isn't because of the forum users.

#24 Posted by Jimbo (9078 posts) - 3 years, 15 days ago
@Milkman: Dedicated forums (and especially official forums) are usually flooded with people whining like fuck about everything imaginable, in my experience at least.

Anyways, my take is that this game was kinda destined to have a cult following, no matter how broken it turned out to be.  "Players love it" seems a bit strong; some players love it and more would hate it - the reviews have to reflect that.  Even a reviewer that loves it has to admit that it can't really be called 'good'.

I'm still looking forward to playing it. Just not nearly enough for me to spend more than at most half price for it.

Ironically, the title of this thread is probably the most suitable for an Alpha Protocol thread. Good intentions, janky as fuck.

@ISuperGamerI: No he just (poorly) tried to hide the word hate. So the title really says  "players love it, reviewers hate it". I don't know why he thought it would be funny.

The game does not play well.

However it is totally worth playing.

These two things are not co-dependent.

You're pretty much right, it plays like about as bad as the first Mass Effect.  However, I'd rather play Mass Effect AND Alpha Protocol than live in a universe where there is only Mass Effect.  If not for Obsidian, then BioWare and Bethesda GS are the only developers making WRPGs anymore.

Considering how much improved Mass Effect 2 was, I'd really like to see Alpha Protocol sell well enough to demand an Alpha Protocol 2.  And maybe let Obsidian work on that game for a full cycle instead of working on it in tandem to a Fallout game.

This probably won't happen, because Sega owns the Alpha Protocol rights, and Sega is possibly the most miserable publisher around.  Activision are a bunch of evil douchebags, but at least they support their products.  The best thing for Obsidian is to try to become an EA Partner and start another IP.

I feel like this has been a good year for critics panning a game and then people flocking to it to turn it into some kind of weird sleeper/cult hit.

HaReviewste isn't a word. Wait, I just used it as a word too!

This games reminds me of  Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Broken when it came out (and still kinda broken) but is now regarded as a classic.

I think you are oversimplifying this. Just because a review doesn't give a game a 8-10, doesn't mean they hate the game. Jeff said in his own review, and on the bombcast, that he likes the game but it's broken as fuck. I assume, for the most part, that the people who like the game would agree with most of the pitfalls brought up in reviews, but enjoy the game anyway.

A "3 Star" game or a middle of the road game with issues but good things too like this one, really ends up being for the people that "love the genre" or that its "their type of game." This is my type of game, and I am enjoying it so far, even if it is glitchy sometimes. I don't care. People who like and care for this genre can look past that kind of stuff. Reviewers can't because they are attempting to read into all the areas. So you may want to take that into consideration when making your decision.

I hate metacritic but usually anything around 55-60+ of a particular genre that I really like, I won't look over. I will at least try it.
