Alpha Protocol is an upcoming third person RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. You play as undercover CIA field agent Michael Thorton as he tries to uncover a conspiracy within the United States Government.

Overview

Alpha Protocol is an action-RPG that places you in the shoes of a CIA operative, Michael Thorton, who is framed when a mission goes wrong. The game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment who was formed by former members of Black Isle Studios when the company, responsible for such cult hits as the Fallout series and Baldur's Gate, folded and is published by Sega. It will introduce a morality system described by developers as adhering to one of the "three B's." Bond, who will go by the book, performing operations as the company wants him to, Bourne, who may have his own agenda, but generally keeps the body count from piling up, and Bauer, who gets the job done and doesn't really care what, or who, stands in his way. It will use the Unreal Engine 3.0.

Plot

The plot of the game contains elements of both a spy mystery story and a betrayal story. Alpha Protocol follows Michael Thorton, a rookie CIA agent. He gets disconnected from his contacts and is thrown aside by his company. Thorton is the only one with the information needed to stop an impending international catastrophe.

The official Alpha Protocol website gives a summary of the plot:

The year is 2009. Hundreds of innocent passengers and crew are killed after a commercial airliner is shot down over Eastern Europe. The culprit? A high-tech U.S. defense missile which had somehow fallen into the wrong hands. As government agent Michael Thorton, you have been chosen to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

Gameplay

In each city, your character in Alpha Protocol will utilize a safe house as a hub from which to embark on missions. Your agent has access to mainline story missions as well as side missions. From the safe house, you also have the opportunity to communicate with contacts and change clothes which, despite how it sounds, is not merely an aesthetic decision. Some missions are better suited to a particular style of dress.

Character Advancement

Players may choose how to advance the game's nine different skills independently with each skill capping at level 10. Players may then choose three specialization skills raising their caps to level 15. On your ascent through skill levels, your character will gain access to different perks affording new abilities in their respective skills.

Equipment

Before each mission, you will choose your character's equipment loadout. You are limited in the number of items you may carry. The loadout will have far-reaching affects on the ways you can and will accomplish missions. You may choose which weapons to take and outfit them with accessories like scopes and silencers. There are different types of armor that may be used with some being capable of mitigating more damage while some lend themselves more to a stealthy approach. Your character also has access to some helpful gadgets like proximity mines and the "sound generator."

Combat

Combat will take place in an over the shoulder perspective. Allowing the player to take cover, blind fire etc. There are multiple firearms at your disposal and numerous high tech devices. As a CIA operative, Micheal Thorton will be trained in hand to hand combat. Lastly, you can put points into skills, giving you access to special abilities. These abilities will run on a cooldown effect.

Dialog

 Dialog screen
 Dialog screen
Dialog consists of a number of responses each mapped to the controller's face buttons which the player presses within a time limit. If you have not chosen a response to the question within the timeframe, your response will default to the mood of your previous response. Dialog choices influence not only the immediate response of the character but also the character's demeanor throughout the remainder of the game. The dialog branches based on your responses. Characters will respond to the mood of your responses in different ways with some handling aggressive responses more gracefully than others. Even your own character's reputation will be shifted based on choices made in conversation. These dialog sequences are a major gameplay element of the game with some interrogation sequences lasting ten minutes or more.

Dialog options also include a head-slam. Ouch.

Controversy

Alpha Protocol has already garnered attention for the inclusion of four optional sex scenes each featuring a different woman. There are achievements both for participating in all or none of the scenes. The developers say they were not concerned with potential controversy when they developed the scenes. They have even gone so far as to advocate for further frank exploration of sex among other adult themes in video games.
