Though each continuity portrays him differently, Alucard is always consistently depicted as the righteous son of the evil Dracula. He is always connected to the Belmont Clan in some way, serving as one of their most loyal allies in the fight against evil.

Adrian Fahrenheits Tepes, more commonly known as Alucard of the Castlevania franchise, is the child of a human mother, Lisa, and the powerful vampire Dracula. His mother was killed by humans, but her strong belief in the goodness of mankind left an impact on Alucard. It is for this reason that he takes it upon himself to stop his father from doing harm to humans. He often fights alongside the Belmont Clan.

Adrian's alias of Alucard is merely the reversed spelling of Dracula. He chose to be known by this name because, like the reversed spelling, his own beliefs are the reverse of his father's.

Alucard first appeared in the NES game Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse as a playable secondary character to the protagonist Trevor Belmont, along with the other characters Grant DaNasty and Sypha Belnades. He later starred as the protagonist of his own game; the 1997 PlayStation release of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. His voice in the game was provided by Robert Belgrade. In the retranslated PSP release included in Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, he is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal.

Symphony of the Night, the direct sequel to Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, follows Alucard's search for Richter Belmont, who went missing following the end of the previous game. He managed to find Richter and discovered that the Belmont had been brainwashed by the evil priest Shaft. He also discovered that Shaft had created an inverse castle ruled by Dracula himself. In the game's end, Alucard confronts his father, defeats him, and destroys the castle.

The game Symphony of the Night was one of the first Castlevania titles to break away from linear stage design and traditional power-ups in favor of a game design directly influenced by the exploratory nature of the Metroid series. The game was also the first Castlevania to feature the RPG element of leveling up to grow in power. Alucard learns the ability to transform into various forms, including a bat, a wolf, and mist, and he can spend money at a shop to buy equipment and items.

Alucard later appears in the GBA title Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow and its direct DS sequel, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. Under the alias of Genya Arikado, he assists the protagonist Soma Cruz in resisting the darkness tempting him as the reincarnation of Dracula.

In the Lords of Shadow Saga

In the Lords of Shadow universe, Alucard is Trevor Belmont, son of Gabriel Belmont aka Dracula. Because of the circumstances of his origin, the Alucard of this continuity is a full vampire, unlike the original Alucard who is a dhampir (half-vampire, half-human). After confronting his vampire father in order to bring him to justice, he is killed. Dracula becomes horrified when he realizes that Trevor is the son he never knew he had, and tries to bring him back to life by turning him into a vampire. Seemingly unsuccessful, he buries Trevor and engraves his coffin with the word "Alucard", having never learned his son's name, and thinking of him as the opposite of all that Gabriel had become - 'Dracula' backwards. However, Dracula's power was so immense that even the fact that Trevor was dead couldn't prevent the vampiric transformation from completing itself, albeit hundreds of thousands of times slower than usual. Thirty years later, Trevor awakens as a vampire, coincidentally on the very night when his own son, Simon Belmont, arrives at Dracula's castle to avenge him. Trevor takes the name of Alucard and assists Simon in defeating Dracula, but chooses not to reveal his identify to his son.

In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, Alucard fights with an unholy version of the Combat Cross called Dark Pain. In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, he wields a special sword named the Crissaegrim, an incredibly powerful magical blade that he made himself, using fragments of the magical swords Glaciem (which could steal the life of enemies away with its frozen blade) and Igneas (which unleashed devastating fury on its enemies with fiery attacks), as well as the broken-off stake point from Gabriel Belmont's legendary Combat Cross, the point that earned it the nickname "Vampire Killer". The fragment of the Vampire Killer gives Crissaegrim an immense power against creatures of the night, while the fragments of the magic swords allow Alucard to channel the power of Glaciem Magic or Igneas Magic through the blade and either steal the health of his enemies on impact or cause much more damage than usual attacks, respectively (it should be noted that Glaciem and Igneas Magic are functionally identical to the Void and Chaos magic wielded by Dracula, respectively). The sword plays a small but vital role in the storyline of the main campaign, and is Alucard's primary weapon in the "Revelations" DLC chapter, in which Alucard is the playable character, not Dracula.

He is voiced by Richard Madden.

Alucard appears in the non-canon Castlevania Legend as an ally of Sonia Belmont. The game's story told of how she became the first Belmont to face Dracula and how he assisted her, going as far as to imply that he fathered Sonia's child, and thus is an ancestor to all future Belmonts (a plot point that is actually true in the Lords of Shadow continuity).

He appears in the fighting game Castlevania Judgement as one of the playable combatants, during which the game's story sees him pulled into the time rift during the Symphony of the Night era. He also features as a playable character in the Xbox Live Arcade title Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, along with four other main protagonists from previous Castlevania titles.

  • In every continuity, Alucard is always linked to Trevor Belmont in particular. In the original continuity, he is famous for being one of the legendary three heroes who fought alongside Trevor against Dracula. In Castlevania Legends, he is Trevor's father through his relationship with Sonia Belmont. In the Lords of Shadow saga, Trevor and Alucard are the same person.
