In Greek mythology, the Amazons were a nation comprised entirely of warrior women. Variations of the myth regarding the nation and its people state that men were not allowed to reside in their territory, nor were they allowed to engage in sex with Amazons, save for a yearly ritual in which the Amazons coupled with men of the Gargarean tribe purely as a means to procreate. Male children born to Amazons were either left with their fathers, left in the wilderness, or killed outright.
In the Golden Axe series, the Amazon Tyris Flare was one of the original game's playable characters. She also appeared in Golden Axe II and III and was the sole playable character in the PS3/Xbox 360 release of Golden Axe: Beast Rider.
Penthesilea is a figure from ancient myth. She was a queen of the Amazons during the age of the Trojan War and the daughter of Ares, the Greek god of war. She is portrayed as a playable character in Warriors: Legends of Troy, and is also represented as a Persona of Mitsuru Kirijo in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3.
The DC Comics character Wonder Woman, also known as Princess Diana, is an Amazon and prominent heroine in the DC Comics universe. She is the daughter of Queen Hippolyta and raised on Themyscira, a secret island granted to the Amazons by the goddess Hera as compensation after Zeus prevents Hippolyta from killing his son Ares out of revenge.
