I only played the first AA and from what I can it's like what CS:S was to CS with it being basically the same game with a few tweaks and all the original maps done on a newer engine. However the gameplay while the core is the same, it plays very differently. From the 20 odd hours I've played so far it's much more realistic and slower and the fire fights feel much more intense than any other online FPS I've played. When you're supressed by fire you really fear for your life and you camp out there trying to hold off the enemy while calling for backup. I've never been in the army but I imagine they capture the feeling quite well, without you fearing for your actual lifem which you'll never simulate and you wouldn't want to.

I really love the training aspects and I may be mistaken but AA was probably one of the first, if not the first to do all the training and advancement of your character in an online FPS. However right now the training seems to be disabled because they're having problems with the servers. Theres alot of this "coming soon" on some of the training and some of the weapon options which I guess is for extras added later like side arms. So the content isn't as rich as the old games but thats the price you pay for a newer engine, like EQ2 when launched had like 10% of the content EQ did.

I personally didn't care for the original AA and never played 2 but I will be playing AA 3 because it just feels alot more intense and it being a one shot kill kinda game really just makes you shit yourself more in battle. I really like the medic aspect to the game and in the coming soon part theres things like combat medic so I guess they plan to carry on letting you advance and make yourself more unique.

The only bad points I can put about the game is theres lots of lag at peak times and theres a shit load of bugs which really do put a downer on playing like sometimes the friendlys spawn looking like the enemy or your gun just wont work. However the game is free and give it time and the problems should be ironed out. It's a really fantastic game and much more intense than anyother online FPS I've played. It reminds me alot like Counter Strike if that game was based on realism and the maps are fantastic!

I have to add that in a time where developers arn't making games for the hardcore anymore like mmorpgs ahve all turned into dumbed down kids games cause thats the biggest market. I'm really thankful that someone out there is still willing to make such a hardcore online FPS. Compared to easy and much more arcade games like COD4 and the rest of the crap coming out today it's nice to see another shooter come out based on realisim. Most people don't like a game such as America's Army but it's just nice to see a title come out for a niche market.

I'll give it a try again, I downloaded it it and attempted to play it but the game randomly took me out of the action. I think its because it had to connect with the authentication server or whatever everytime i did something and it couldnt so it took me to main menu every 5 mins.

I know they updated it so i guess i'lll give it another shot.

Well I played quite a bit of America's Army 2 and I didn't think much of that but it sounds like this one is worth a play. I hope I can find it an enjoyable experience.

It's a fun game when it's not kicking you in the balls with one of its many bugs or server crashes. Hopefully they can iron out some of the bigger issues relatively soon, but with most of the original dev team (if not all of them) laid off and the work now farmed out to some random office in Alabama or whatever I'm not going to hold my breath.

If you want "hardcore" get ArmA2. The training's nothing to brag about, it does little to help newcomers and only annoys people who already know their way around an FPS. The game's still feeling broken, the performance is not flawless even though it doesn't look half as good as other Unreal Engine 3 games that do run flawlessly, and there are other issues. Overall, I like the new enhancements to the mechanics but it currently feels like half the game the last version was, if not less. It'll get there if the new development studio is worth their salt, but it's far from there atm.

America's Army 3 had a real shaky start. I haven't heard anyone say they like it yet except you guys. Maybe the patch fixed all the shit that happened at launch.

What puts off my mates is it's too hard for them to join the server I'm on because theres no follow friend option and even if you give them the IP if it's full theres no queue option, you just keep trying to join and being kicked off, not even told the servers full and thats why you're being kicked.

I love the game it has the best sound effects and so intense but the server browser and bugs lets it down.
