Nightmares Avoided With Another Amnesia Delay

Utterly pleasant.

I don’t usually celebrate game delays, but another day without having to play Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is a day without a potential heart attack in my life.

My chest problems have been pushed back a few months, as Frictional Games reveals another delay for its collaboration with Dear Esther developer thechineseroom, a follow-up to Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The game’s now set for Q2--April through June.

“How come a game meant for Halloween 2012 has been delayed for so long? Originally we thought it would be a short, experimental game set in the universe of Amnesia, but thechineseroom had a vision that was bigger than that,” said the company in a blog post. “As their work progressed, the potential for a much greater project emerged. What we ended up with is no longer what we had first imagined, but a fully fledged Amnesia game. A different kind of Amnesia, but definitely not a short experiment.”

It’s not short? Great.

The reason Frictional Games isn't developing A Machine for Pigs itself, by the way, it because the studio's working on something new in the horror department.

I'd like to see what the Dear Esther guys can do with more of a game game.

#6 Posted by galloughs (162 posts) - 3 months, 4 days ago

Bummer, I'm really looking forward to this! I loved the original source engine Dear Esther (haven't tried the newer version that costs money), and Amnesia is probably in my top 3 games of all time. This game is basically a wet dream come true for me!

thechineseroom is a pretty great name for a developer. Never played the first Amnesia but if it were to come to consoles I would check it out.

I hope they have some plans on how to differentiate Machine for Pigs from Pneumbra and the original Dark Descent. As much as I love Amnesia, it was basically a clone of the Pneumbra games with a different skin. I hope to see some survival horror innovation come out of this game.

With it not being the same developer I'm holding off on buying it day one, but I do hope that this will be fantastic. I'm dreading it, but I survived Amnesia so I can (try to) survive this too.

A Machine For Pigs is still probably the best title for a video game ever.

Now it's set to come out around the same time as Slender: The Arrival. So that's...pleasant.

I really don't want to play this game. The first one was so flipping scary and I am a coward. Yet, I know I will in April - June.

#17 Edited by Kidable (110 posts) - 3 months, 4 days ago

I literally had to put my fingers on different shifts to press in the "W" button cause they got so tired of holding it in for minutes at a time in Dear Esther. I ultimately used one hand on the Xbox Controller's thumbstick to walk and the mouse button to look around better.

Let's hope Machine for Pigs is better.

I've never beaten the first one, not because it was scary but because I get distracted by other games and play them and by the time I go back to it I have to re-install it and start over.

I know right, and he's out of the office all the time too. Crash your bike? HA! Yeah right! Bikes don't exist anymore.

On a more serious note,

"... A Machine for Pigs itself, by the way, it because the studio's..."

should be ... A Machine for Pigs itself, by the way, IS because the studio's...

More time to finish the original. I fixed the elevator and my last save is right before I step into the elevator. That was months ago.

Best reason for a delay ever?

#27 Posted by kre8havoc (155 posts) - 3 months, 4 days ago

I am sad. I was really looking forward to die in real life from playing this game.

#28 Posted by mylifeforAiur (3411 posts) - 3 months, 4 days ago

Yeah, I'm a little infuriated due to the delay. I need my survival-horror fix.

I'm only now finding out that this game is serious and not essentially an Amensia mod where everybody's a pig.

At least I get a little more time to try and get through Amnesia. That game is exhausting.

"Originally we thought it would be a short, experimental game set in the universe of Amnesia"

...wait, what? Am I the only one that totally missed that detail before? I thought it was always supposed to be a proper sequel... at least now they're saying it'll actually be a full game I guess...

#35 Posted by Zombie_Shakespeare (132 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

This is concurrently the best and worst video game related news I have gotten so far this year.

I can't wait to see what Frictional is working on. And I can't wait to play chineseroom's take on Amnesia. Just...ahhh.

Dammit. And at the same time, fuck yeah.

I'm genuinely scared just thinking about playing this game.

#39 Posted by noisyturtle (15 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

Given that an actual horror title is really only released every 3 years or more, I have no issues with the delay. We horror fans have to take what we can get, given that mainstream 'horror' titles are nothing more than action games now.

#40 Posted by SmithCommaJohn (76 posts) - 3 months, 3 days ago

I'm finally getting around to playing the first Amnesia game, and I just got through the sequence with the invisible monster in the water. That shit was scarier than plenty of horror movies I've seen.

I'll definitely be playing the next game, but I think I'll need a break when I'm done with the first one, so these guys can take all the time they need, as far as I'm concerned.
