Amplitude is the sequel to Frequency, Harmonix's first rhythm game for the PlayStation 2.

Introduction


After breaking onto the scene with Frequency, Harmonix followed up with a similarly-themed game, Amplitude.  While more evolutionary than revolutionary, Amplitude is a refinement over its predecessor in many ways, offering improved gameplay and more of the same exciting tunes that made Frequency so much fun.

Gameplay


At its heart, Amplitude and Frequency are very similar games.  Both split the songs into tracks, such as drum, bass, synth, vocals, etc.  What Amplitude left out, however, was the freestyle track.  In Frequency, this track allowed you to score points and stay in the music when all the tracks where unlocked for a given section.  Amplitude, however, did away with sections entirely.  Once a track was unlocked, it stayed unlocked for a number of measures and then turned off again.  Furthermore, while Frequency laid out the gameplay field in an octagonal tube, Amplitude lays out each track side-by-side in a flat, horizontal plane.  Each track was 'unlocked' by pressing buttons in time with incoming 'notes', much like other music games, in either the left, middle or right positions.  If the player managed to hit all the notes in a two-bar span, that track became unlocked.  Unlocking tracks in succession increased a score multiplier up to x8 and, ultimately, was key to getting a high score. 

In order to keep your score multiplier going throughout the song, you had to unlock tracks from the left side of the 'ribbon' to the right and then quickly move back to the left to begin unlocking the tracks again once they expired.  Failing to unlock a track reduced your 'energy' level, and if it fell too low, you failed the song.  You were aided in your quest by a couple of power-ups which could be acquired by hitting all the notes in a given, power-up measure. The Auto-catcher automatically unlocked a track.  The multiplier increased your score multiplier by x2.  The freestyler allowed you to play an arpeggiated synth or scratch track along with the music, carrying you further through the song without reducing energy.
