Getting an Android phone

#1 Posted by MeierTheRed (4941 posts) -

As the topic says i'm getting a Android based phone, a HTC Desire to be more precise. I'm new to the Droid world, so i would love some app recommendations, other than the GiantBomb app of course.

I won't be playing games on it, cause it hate mobile games on phones. I had an iphone and i never played anything on that either, so anything else would be appreciated.

I'm about to spit some knowledge:

  1. Dropbox - If you use Dropbox (which you should!), this app is outstanding. It lets you easily transfer files to and from your phone. Makes sharing things super easy. One of my favorite apps.
  2. Galcon - A super weird game that was recommended by the fine folks over at Tested. It's pretty fun, but I've only played a bit of it so I can't really explain what it is. You can google it.
  3. Robo Defense - Tower defense game. Fun.
  4. Google Goggles - Basically a novelty. It lets you take pictures of things and it will spit back all kinds of info like google results for the item, and prices to buy the item (it it can be bought). All kinds of weird stuff. It's kinda cool, not really necessary though.
  5. Google Sky Map - Freakin awesome app that shows you all the stars and constellations and whatnot. It's awesome because you just point your phone at the sky and it will show you whatever you're pointing at.
  6. Last.fm - great for playing music
  7. Movies - a cool little movie app that shows rotten tomatoes scores and release dates and everything. You can even watch trailers.
  8. Shazam - Hold your phone up to a song and it'll tell you what's playing. You can then easily buy the song from Amazon MP3 if you want.
  9. Twicca - Awesome Twitter client. Touiteur is another good one.
  10. VLC remote - lets you control VLC player on your computer through wifi. It's awesome if you like sitting far away from your computer while watching movies or listening to music.
  11. Opera Mini - The best/fastest browser I have been able to find. And it's free!
  12. Google Translate - forgot about this one. It's great. It obviously translates, but than it can often speak the translation for you. Cool stuff.

I probably forgot something, but these are my favorites that aren't included out of the box. If you want to change up your homescreen, Launcher Pro is free and gives a lot of customization options.

Those all sound awesome. I'll try 'em all.

@pornstorestiffi: Make sure you get the official Dropbox app. It should say "Dropbox, inc." under the name.

Noted, found this pretty cool site called Appbrain.com. Lets you synchronize your apps from the webpage, plus it adds a App Market, thats searchable. Has the real Dropbox app and also the newest release of the GiantBomb application.

I'll post a few more that aren't on my phone anymore, but that I have tried in the past:

  1. Kindle - Yo, it's Kindle. if you want to get your Kindle on without a Kindle, this apps got your back.
  2. ebay - self explanatory.
  3. Wifi analyzer - I don't know why I haven't redownloaded this yet because it's awesome. It shows all of the wifi signals in the area and what channel they're on. You can use this info to switch your wifi channel of your router to a less congested one, giving you faster wireless internet.
  4. Audible - if you're into that kinda thing. :P
  5. Retro Camera - fun to mess around with. Basically just gives you a variety of ways to take old looking pictures.
  6. Yelp - People review things. Can be useful sometimes.

There's a million apps, but that's probably enough.

@pornstorestiffi: Huh, never heard of AppBrain. Seems cool though.

I know, it's crazy. I don't know what's up with the default browser being so slow. The bad thing is that it won't display the new mobile Whiskey sites properly (at least not for me).

I have a HTC Desire as well, it's a great phone. The only app i can think of that hasnt been listed is Remote for itunes - only useful if you have itunes on your computer, but you can go through your library and change the songs and volume etc. from your phone over wifi. Tested sometimes has some iphone and android app recommendations, theres a couple of vids and some(1)  articles(2).

If u plan on using 3g moderatly or more you should get an app to monitor your usage. I am using 3g watchdog right now and it works great but I am also trying out an app called PhoneUsage which tracks call time, texts and 3g. Make sure to visit tested.com all the time because they have a lot of android coverage. I think since the iPhone 4 Will has gone all out android. In fact Tested is the reason why i chose my NexusOne over an iPhone.

@Malchom: It depends on your plan, but a lot of them have unlimited data. That app could still be useful for tracking minutes though, unless you have a carrier app that tells you all that already.

I've had my Nexus for a while, only apps I have that haven't been mentioned are: * eStrong File Explorer - Best manager I've used so far. Able to browse network and FTP shares is a bonus. * Beautiful Widgets - Great clock and weather widget for your home screen.
