Andy Murray is a Scottish tennis player who currently sits as the world number three.

Born in 15 May, 1987 in Scotland, Andy Murray is currently Britain's highest-ranked tennis player, peaking at number two in August 2009. He is most proficient on hard courts and has had considerable success on this surface. His most notable achievement in 2008 was reaching the US Open final, losing to Roger Federer on the final day. He became the first British Open era player in 2008 to win five ATP tournaments in one year.

Many believe Murray has the potential to win a Grand Slam in the future, including all-time greats John McEnroe and Bjorn Bjorg. In addition, Murray is one of the very few players to hold a winning record over Federer.

Murray works with a team of fitness experts, with Miles Maclagan acting as his head coach. Before that, he was coached by Brad Gilbert. During the European clay-court season, former Roland Garros finalist Alex Corretja joins the team as a specialist. The Scot also occasionally plays doubles with his brother, Jamie Murray.

2008

Andy Murray's breakthrough year begun with winning at Doha. This propelled him back into the top ten. Not long afterwards, he won his second tournament of the year in Marseille.

Because clay was by far his weakest surface, Murray started working with former French Open runner-up Alex Corretja in an attempt to improve his results. This did not have much immediate effect, as he once again suffered early exits in all of the clay events just before Roland Garros. At the French Open, though, he reached the third round, his best performance up to this point. The clay court season was followed by a successful  grass-court one, which included reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon before being soundly beaten by eventual winner Rafael Nadal. In the fourth round, he came back from two sets down to defeat Richard Gasquet in a spirited comeback.

Murray enjoyed a very successful US Open Series, reaching the semi-final of the Toronto Masters and winning the Cincinnati Masters, beating Novak Djokovic in the final, to reach a career-high number six in the world. However, he suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to Lu-Yen Tsen of Taiwan. He bounced back from this, though, by reaching the US Open final, besting Rafael Nadal for the first time in his career in the semi-finals, but eventually lost to Roger Federer in straight sets. Because of his performance there, he became the world number four.

He followed this by winning the next two tournaments he entered in Madrid to lift his second Masters shield and in St. Petersburg, Russia. Murray closed out the year by reaching the semis of the year-ending Tennis Masters Cup. He was undefeated in the round robin stage, but was visibly tired after his three-hour marathon match against Federer and was defeated by world number five Nikolay Davydenko of Russia with relative ease.

Murray ended the year as the world number four.

2009

Murray continued to establish himself as one of the most in-form players in the ATP circuit, despite going out to Fernando Verdasco in a five-set fourth round match at the Australian Open. He won an Abu Dhabi exhibition tournament, defended his Doha title, and won the title at Rotterdam before reaching the final of the first rebranded ATP Masters Series 1000 event of the year at Indian Wells. Just two weeks later, Murray went one better and picked up the Miami Masters shield, which happened after a straight sets victory over Djokovic in the final.

Despite working with Corretja again, Murray's expectations were not as high as he prepared for the European clay-court seasons, but he got off to a very decent start as he reached the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing to the "King of Clay" himself, Nadal. Murray followed that up with a quarter-finals appearance in Madrid and made his first appearance in the last eight at the French Open. He ended the clay-court season as the world number three, surpassing Novak Djokovic.

Murray went on to have a strong grass-court season in England, where he won Queen's and made it to the semis of Wimbledon, where he lost to Andy Roddick, but despite keeping that form going into the hard-court season, which included a win at the Montreal Masters that saw his ranking elevate to a career-high of number two in the world, he was knocked out in the fourth round of the US Open by Marin Cilic. Murray qualified for the renamed ATP World Tour Finals, but did not make it past the round-robin stage.
