Andy Murray is a Scottish tennis player who currently sits as the world number three.

Born in 15 May, 1987 in Scotland, Andy Murray is currently Britain's highest-ranked tennis player, currently at a career-high number three in the world (compatriots Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski peaked at number four). He is most proficient on hard courts and has had considerable success on this surface. His most notable achievement in 2008 was reaching the US Open final, beating Rafael Nadal in an entertaining semi-final and eventually losing to Roger Federer on the final day. He became the first British Open era player in 2008 to win five ATP tournaments in one year.

Because of what Murray has achieved at a relatively young age, many believe that he has the potential to win a Grand Slam in the future, including all-time greats John McEnroe and Bjorn Bjorg. In addition, Murray is one of the very few players to hold a winning record over Federer.

Murray works with a team of fitness experts, with Miles Maclagan acting as his head coach, which initially raised criticisms from the press before his extremely successful hard-court season. Before that, he was coached by Brad Gilbert. During the European clay-court season, former Roland Garros finalist Alex Corretja joins the team as a specialist. The Scot also occasionally plays doubles with his brother, Jamie Murray. Jamie is Britain's highest-ranked doubles player.

2008

Andy Murray's breakthrough year begun with winning at Doha. This propelled him back into the top ten, and he was seeded ninth for the Australian Open, where he lost in the first round to eventual runner-up Jo-Wilfred Tsonga. Not long afterwards, he won his second tournament of the year in Marseille before knocking out Roger Federer in Dubai in the first round. He then failed to make an impact in the Indian Wells and Miami ATP Masters Series events, suffering early losses.

Because clay was by far his weakest surface, Murray started working with former French Open runner-up Alex Corretja in an attempt to improve his results. This did not have much immediate effect, as he once again suffered early exits in all of the clay events just before Roland Garros. At the French Open, though, he reached the third round, his best performance up to this point. This included a very convincing 6-4 6-0 6-4 win over clay specialist Jose Acasuso. The clay court season was followed by a successful grass-court one. At Queen's, Murray reached the quarters before he withdrew due to a thumb injury, but recovered and reached the quarters at Wimbledon before being soundly beaten by eventual winner Rafael Nadal. In the fourth round, he came back from two sets down to defeat Richard Gasquet in a spirited comeback.

Murray enjoyed a very successful US Open Series, reaching the semi-final of the Toronto Masters and winning the Cincinnati Masters, beating Djokovic in the final, to reach a career-high number six in the world. However, he suffered a shock defeat in the first round of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to Lu-Yen Tsen of Taiwan. He bounced back from this, though, by reaching the US Open final, besting Rafael Nadal for the first time in the semi-finals, but eventually lost to Roger Federer in straight sets. Because of his performance there, he became the world number four.

He followed this by winning the next two tournaments he entered. In the Madrid Masters, he got revenge on Federer in the semis before beating Gilles Simon in the final to lift his second Masters shield. And in St. Petersburg in Russia, he successfully retained the title he won last year with a 6-1 6-1 victory over Andrey Golubev in the final. This was his 23rd win in 25 matches. Murray closed out the year by reaching the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters and reaching the semis of the year-ending Tennis Masters Cup. He was undefeated in the round robin stage, which included wins against Federer and Andy Roddick, but was visibly tired after his three-hour marathon match against Federer and was defeated by world number five Nikolay Davydenko of Russia with relative ease.

Murray ended the year as the world number four.

2009

Murray continued to establish himself as one of the most in-form players in the ATP circuit, despite going out to Fernando Verdasco in a five-set fourth round match at the Australian Open. He won an Abu Dhabi exhibition tournament defeating James Blake, Federer, and Nadal, and defended his Doha title with relative ease, besting Roddick. He also won the title at Rotterdam, beating Nadal in the final, before reaching the final of the first rebranded ATP Masters Series 1000 event of the year at Indian Wells, where Nadal got his revenge. Just two weeks later, Murray went one better and picked up the Miami Masters shield, which happened after a straight sets victory over Djokovic in the final.

Despite working with Corretja again, Murray's expectations were not as high as he prepared for the European clay-court seasons, but he got off to a very decent start as he reached the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing to the "King of Clay" himself, Nadal. Murray followed that up with a quarter-finals appearance in Madrid and made his first appearance in the last eight at the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, eventually losing to Fernando Gonzalez in four sets. He ended the clay-court season as the world number three, surpassing Novak Djokovic.

Murray is currently playing at Queen's to prepare himself for Wimbledon.
