The first console-specific downloadable platform to be graced by Rovio Mobile's popular physics-based puzzler Angry Birds is… PlayStation Minis? Weird.

In this week's PS Blog "The Drop" column for Jan. 3, Angry Birds was surprisingly announced for an imminent release on PS3 and PSP Minis. It hit yesterday afternoon for $3.99--about three bucks more than the iOS version, and $3.99 more than it is on Android (where Angry Birds is free, but ad-supported). This particular version of the game is essentially the same one you played before the most recent "Mighty Eagle" update, which added several new levels and the paid DLC bird. Overall, you're getting around 200 levels with this Minis version, which seems fair.

I should note here that playing Angry Birds on your PS3 will probably only want to make you switch back to the iOS versions, which look much, much cleaner and run a tad smoother as well. Despite the more powerful hardware of the PS3 (my PSP is... somewhere), I've experienced general sluggishness with the UI and the delivery of birds. Plus, it's just odd to crank back a cardinal and let it rip with an analog stick, if you're used to the original touch interface.

Angry Birds is still slated for an Xbox Live and Wii release, though it's unknown when either version will hit, or what they'll actually have in terms of content.

I wouldn't pay for this game to be honest.

Angry Birds sucks on every platform. I don't get the fascination and I played about half of it on iOS...

Angry Birds sucks. I don't understand the obession with this glorified flash game.

#7 Edited by Rave (370 posts) -

I bought it  had to see what the hype was about, since I dont have  an iphone or android this will do. Plays ok on the PSP press L and R to zoom out or L or R to switch focus to either side of the screen. My only complaint was the analog nub, pulling back and letting go isnt the best way of launching a bird Id recommend pulling back and the pressing X seems to work way better. Havent tried it on PS3 yet. Fun little game worth $4.

I think I played a Java or Flash game exactly like this in like 2004.

Just...bizarre.

It's an alright game, but because it's polished looking and easy to play, everyone with an idevice downloads it.  The one finger tap or slash games with pretty art sell very well.

I would pay like $10 to have this on the 360, can't wait!

#12 Posted by knownspace (85 posts) -

Amazed they made it a Mini. I expect a fully 3D PSN/XBLA release is probably on the cards.

#13 Posted by JackSukeru (5816 posts) -

Why?

Why are the birds so angry?

So angry.

#14 Posted by Hizang (8534 posts) -

I never really liked Angry birds, I'll just stick with Age of Zombie!

There are approximately 4 bajillion better games on XBLA that are 10 dollars or less.

The irony of those Marcus PSP commercials is fantastic.

Yet here they are selling the same baby games on the PSP for a ridiculous $4. How can they underestimate mobile gaming so badly?
#17 Posted by wizll (9 posts) -

if i can i'd rather have back the 1.99 i spent buying this piece of crap "game". the game is nonsense.

#18 Posted by ch13696 (4582 posts) -

Eeeehhhhhh... I paid for it once on the iPhone and I got it for free on my Android. Really no point in getting it again. Unless there's some sort of trophy support.

Beware, this quote could launch a million trolls.

Doesn't seem to be the best of ports.
Anyway... Hyv ä Suomi \m/

#21 Posted by RecSpec (3678 posts) -

So the PS3 gets an emulated version of the PSP one. Nice.

Because flash games can't be good ever. And because they can't ever be good it isn't worth spending a dollar to play an extremely polished version of an old flash game idea.

Like tower defense games. Who would spend money on those? Oh, wait, tons.

Games like this aren't what i fire up my ps3 for, they are what I play when i have a couple free minutes here and there, releasing angry birds on consoles seems silly to me..  I play mostly big games that I will spend a few hours playing on my consoles, not silly flash games..

I have angry birds on my iphone and to me that is where it belongs

yeah, seeing something so simple on a console is weird but no wonder its only 4 bucks

Will those birds ever learn to not be so angry ?

When those damn pigs stop stealing their eggs.

THIS is Angry Birds?! That's it?! I expected it to be something more, from all the hype I've heard. This is just a variation of those hundreds of flash games that have been around for years. Is this the new PS3 trend? They're going to jam the marketplace full of shitty free flash games, for a price? Meh.

It is for PSP but playable on the PS3.

Call me when they add a third person mode alternate endings.

Mobile phone games coming to PlayStation minis doesn't sound weird at all. Isn't that what many of the minis are, ports of mobile games?

Yeah, they've been doing this since the PSP Go launched. If you haven't noticed them yet, you're probably not going to.

i'm happy with it... currently I'm still using my Berry and haven't gotten an iPad as of yet, so I finally have a way to play the game.  It's a good time waster and would only be classified as overpriced in comparison to other versions of Angry Birds, not compared to Minis.  I'm glad they put it out, even if it isn't the best version - it's good enough for me to mess around with now.

#33 Posted by Landon (4115 posts) -

There are better launch games than Angry Birds.

It's not a launch game for PlayStation minis. It's the other way around. The PlayStation minis service is the first console launch platform for Angry Birds.

I was actually referring to the launch game flash genre. Games where you propel a character for distance or to knock something over.
#36 Posted by LordAndrew (13972 posts) -
@Landon: Ah, that makes sense now.
#37 Posted by RecSpec (3678 posts) -

The minis have always been pointless since they launched the service with $8 Tetris.

I think the only mini worth paying for is WTF!?
I hate how Sony throws these in with PS+  and treats them like normal PSN games.

#38 Posted by AuthenticM (3672 posts) -

Is the Move supported? It would make sense.

#39 Posted by MisterMouse (3531 posts) -

i dont feel like it will work out that well...

#40 Posted by Kraznor (1573 posts) -

I still don't get the appeal of this game. Have the iOS version, its okay but not good enough to justify its success. Why isn't a Doodle Jump movie in the works? Now THATS a game.

It's become quite a hit, so it's not too surprising.

Personally, I hate the game.

Expect to see this game for $15 on the xbox , if you think it will be less than 800 you're only fooling yourself. that is unless it goes reight into the indie games section in which case it will probably be decently priced but sell hardly anything.

trophies?
#45 Posted by TheLastNeo (433 posts) -

This has got to be the dumbest thing ever.  I get that they might as well cash in while they're still a hot brand, but cmon.. making a freakin playstation version is the dumbest thing ever, considering that angry birds was designed as a 1 finger input game.  While it was genius / clever for touch devices... using a controller seems just...

lame.

#46 Edited by ShadowKnight508 (659 posts) -

I might look into this, but at the moment, I am not so sure how well it will all work out on the PS3 since it was developed for devices that use touch-screens (iPhone/iPad) or for 1-finger input control (stated above).

#47 Posted by Dyslexiactic (14 posts) -

Is it just me, or does anyone else find the art in this game depressing?

#48 Posted by TwistedGamer (106 posts) -

lol why does everyone hate angry birds?...it gets me threw the slow hours at work

Nuh. It's a mini.
Unfortunately :(

Don't want to play this game on a console... on a portable device like touch screen phones? Hell yes! Even on the PSP it *might* be alright... but meh if people really want their Angry Birds fix that badly that they will play it at home on their console.. as oppose to a real game... I find that kind of strange.
