Animal Crossing: City Folk

Animal Crossing: City Folk is a video game that consists of 6 releases

I should clarify from the start: I’m not a great example of a “hardcore” gamer. Well, maybe in some respects: I own multiple game consoles and spend way too much money on games. On the other hand, I’m not threatening to rival Ice T’s prowess in Call of Duty 4 any time soon.

I bought two video games this week, Animal Crossing: City Folk and Demon’s Souls. One of these games occupies that odd grey area between ultra-casual and slightly nutty hardcore, offering to take only five minutes of your day but willing to take many hours more. The other is a staggeringly difficult game that involves sticking sharp objects into demonic monsters or soulless humans driven insane, shortly before dying and starting all over again. Guess which is which?

 He will cut you, fool.
 He will cut you, fool.

I’m still waiting for City Folk; I ordered it on Amazon, caved when I saw they were offering it for half price. I can’t find my gamecube copy of the game. I more than likely had it sealed away to save myself. There’s only so much fishing you can do before you crack. I grabbed Demon’s Souls as soon as it was available, spurred on by some small section of my video game playing ego that decided that “old school difficulty” was an appealing concept.

Defeat the mighty dragon using only foul language.
Defeat the mighty dragon using only foul language.

It has proved to be so. It took me quite a while to reach and defeat the boss of the first area in the game. The main issue in Demon’s Souls apart from its natural difficulty is the fact that when you die you lose all the souls you’ve collected up to that point. It just goes right back down to zero. This is fine if you can get back to your “bloodstain” but if you can’t make it back to the point of your last defeat, goodbye forever to the only currency in the game for buying weapons, upgrading equipment and improving character stats.

I thought this would drive me crazy, and I think it has, a bit. This game is well worth it though. I don’t typically go looking for “challenging” games. I’ve never played Megaman 9 and I’ve had a lot of frustrating experiences with the GBA-based Metroid games. The only game I’ve ever played and thoroughly enjoyed that I can compare this to is Ninja Gaiden. The secret to both games, I realised, is that although they will drive you up the walls with the level of concentration required, neither game becomes cheap at any point. The end result is that once you’ve figured out how to defeat a certain type of enemy or negotiate a certain type of scenario, you can do it again. And again. And again…

Animal Crossing does not exactly overflow with such moments. Still, the game has its own way of drawing you in, whether it’s collect various fish or be at the right place at the right time. The genius of the game is the adherence to a real world clock. I always knew I could cheat at the game on Gamecube just by changing the game clock, but this was one game I didn’t want to ruin. Ok, I’ll more than likely never see the New Years party in the game. It’s become one of the great appeals for me, a central facet of this wonderful illusion that there is a living breathing town going on whether I decide to play or not.

So, this week, I am going hardcore in every which way. Loving it, too. Now excuse me, I’m off to battle evil demons in the dark and maybe get a hair cut, if I can afford it.

You know it to be true.

I mean, after all, now we have Animal Crossing calendars and calculators up in our DSiWare. If that isn't indicative of the Animal Farm-style revolution to come, then I don't know what is.

But in case you still don't believe, I think this is more than enough proof to make you a convert.

You may fear them now, but I, for one, welcome our new animal overlords.

I got it earlier than expected because I got some extra money from the Goverment from Obama's stimulus package. I haven't tried it out yet because I just bought it like a hour ago but I will be playing alot today for sure. Here is a picture I took of it thanks for reading my blogs later.

I want to find some fruit. Ask me for my Wii friend code if you want to play.

Update: I now have pears,peaches, & oranges.

Righto, so this is my first blog... a time of celebration indeed. I might start posting a blog about every week or so and maybe I'll get into a routine. So yeah if you enjoy reading this feel free to buddy me because my buddy list is.... uh.... EMPTY.

Any hoodles I just got a GameFly account about a month ago and I figured I'd start posting some of my impressions (and some reviews) of the games I've been playing. I recently rented a few older games that I never played like The New Super Mario Brothers and Call of duty 4. There's not much to be said about  NSMB I enjoyed my time playing it but after awhile it did start to grow a little repetitive. It was a lot less difficult than the original mainly because of the inclusion of the storage box which allowed me to almost always be showering myself in fire flowers since there’s so many of them. I’m glad I rented this game because I don’t think I’d ever play it again after beating it. If I wanted to play a Mario 2D platformer I’d rather play SMB or SMB3 then NSMB. It was a fun game I just don’t think it stacks up well compared the originals.

I know a lot of you are probably going to put me on your hit list for not playing COD4 until now…. Well… I probably deserve it because I should have played this game a lot earlier. The reason I rented COD4 is because I bought COD:WaW around when it came out and I just wanted to save some money. That said I prefer COD4 over WaW just because Modern Warfare gives me a stiffy much more then WW2. I think I’ll save my money for Modern Warfare 2 though instead of rushing out to buy COD4. Without going in to too much detail since this game is oooooooold and most of you have probably already played it I’m just going say the Story is a hell of a lot better than WaW and the ending was very satisfying. The Multiplayer is addicting and stuff but you probably already know that so…. moving on.

Another game I’ve been playing a lot of lately is Animal Crossing: City Folk. I really liked the original Animal Crossing and Wild World so naturally I was eagerly anticipating City Folk. I hate to say it but in my opinion City Folk was a big disappointment. There’s a few neat features added like being able to customize every side of your shirt, the city adds a few things but nothing major and there’s USB keyboard support. The major one is of course WiiSpeak… now I didn’t really use wiispeak that much but mostly just because I don’t like the concept at all. Having to yell at my TV is just weird and I don’t like forcing people to listen to my Dog barking at squirrels outside of the window in my room. Using a keyboard to communicate with people is fast enough for me so I don’t really have much of a desire to use voice chat with a game like Animal crossing since it doesn’t require you yell tactics to other players and fend off zombies at the same time. I’m aware that voice chat is more convenient but hearing my friend’s deep manly voice coming from the TV while playing Animal crossing makes it a lot less charming which is why I prefer use a keyboard…. Also I’d really just rather use a headset over Wiispeak.

Alright, that’s enough of my ranting about WiiSpeak…. MOVIN’ ON! I also don’t like that now you can only get a 3 room house opposed to 6 room super mansion in Wild World. I suppose it’s because you can have 4 characters living in different houses now but still that mansion in Wild World looked badass. To summarize what City Folk is I’m just going to say it’s Wild World with a few things tacked on. It’s still a lot of fun but it doesn’t bring anything new for people who already played Wild World.

Those are a few of my impressions of the games I’ve been playing lately. I also just posted a review of LittleBigPlanet so go check it out it’s my first review. Just to be completely random I also upload some of my crudely drawn fan art. It’s all artistically bad so go check out my gallery if you’re in the mood to punish your eyes... I drew most of them out of boredom and I made them a long time ago. Feel free to post feedback or debate any of the stuff I discussed. Oh, and lastly HAPPY PRESIDENT’S DAY!... WOO!...

Okay, so my Xbox 360 finally crapped itself, and it's about damn time.

No, it wasn't the ye olde ring of death but my video output was totally tripping out before giving out entirely. Observe:

The Psychedelic Xbox Experience
The Psychedelic Xbox Experience

The end was nigh, and my life with the Xbox 360 flashed before my eyes...

Playing Gears Of War in 1080p for the first time...

Buying my first XBLA title, Pac-Man Championship Edition...

Unlocking 1000G in Burnout Paradise, and 200G in Uno, which were my first retail and arcade games with all achievements unlocked...

And then... what?

IT FIXED ITSELF SOMEHOW!

I don't know why, but all of a sudden it works fine again. I had talked to "Jim" from India for nothing, because everything is rocknrolla again. I guess all's well that ends well. This experience was not aimless though; I did learn a few things. It's harder than it seems to force the Red Ring Of Death, and I learned how to remove the faceplate.

I was meant to miss the release of the Halo Wars demo and the Burnout Paradise DLC, but a 360 death at this point would still have been in good timing. My Guitar Hero: World Tour drum kit is out for replacement anyway, so what better time to be without the box? Besides, the backup plan wasn't really going to cut it...

And to think, I was going to buy Animal Crossing tomorrow! Bah!

You know you want to play it.

Indeed.
Indeed.

The fan-created magazine ad thread over on NeoGAF is quite a spectacle, with the MadWorld ads which start appearing on page 18 being a standout. Before that game, however, Persona 4 was also the subject of some ads, with my profile picture being my favorite from that bunch. While not an ad per se, I found the fake box art for Yasoinaba no Mori to nonetheless be rather amusing. Imagine what life would be life if such a game did indeed exist.

The speech bubble by the television essentially says, "Let's go to the TV," by the way.

I know it's a little late to be presenting this, but like your girlfriend's period, it's better late than never. And I promise that this won't be as messy.

I just want to note that these are the games that I managed to play in 2008. I have played most of these games all the way through, or at least long enough to pass judgment.  Please remember that these are my opinions, as I most likely have different tastes in games than you. With that being said, I give you.........the list.

My Favorite Games of 2008

The following 5 games are games that stand out in my mind as the best time investments of the year. These are games that will remain in my collection forever. Games that I suggest you check out.

5) Fallout 3 (I played the Xbox 360 version)
Shoulda worn a raincoat.
Shoulda worn a raincoat.

To be honest, Fallout 3 could have gone either way on this list. But I am able to see through it's faults and realize that in the broad scope, it's an excellent game. The sheer size of the world and the things to do in it are very impressive. Most of the voice acting is great and again, the sheer amount of it demand's my respect. While there are a lot of aspects of the game that I wish were different, it's the little things that are done so right that keeps me from selling this game on eBay (that is a complement).

4) Braid (Xbox Live! Arcade)
Even Donkey Kong is envious.
Even Donkey Kong is envious.

Braid proves that you don't need big guns, loads of voice acting, or multiplayer to in order to have a great time with your video game console. With it's beautiful hand drawn design, it's terrific musical score, and puzzles that force you to think outside of typical platforming conventions, Braid has set the bar for independent game developers. The story is simple, but very moving in the way that it's told. If you have not yet tried Braid, I implore that you do so. And if after you have tried it, you still aren't sure if it's worth the 1200 Microsoft Points, let me assure you that it is. Don't take my word for it, though. Take everyone else's.

3) Animal Crossing: City Folk  (Nintendo Wii)
This guy looks like he just got his crack fix. Someone needs to clean up this city.
This guy looks like he just got his crack fix. Someone needs to clean up this city.

Go ahead. Call me a little girl for loving the Animal Crossing franchise. It's okay. I know that it's not a hardcore gamer's game to end all games. I know it's got cutesy little animals. And I know that the formula hasn't really changed much since Animal Crossing on the Gamecube. But you know what? None of that matters to me. Animal Crossing: City Folk is fun. It's not so much a game as it is a relaxation tool. The addition (or return) of holidays and the new city (hence the title) have made this entry the star gem in the franchise. And the use of Wii 24 Connect is great (although it could use a bit more). The game is much better if you have friends to visit, but it's also good on it's own. If you have this game, but are ashamed to admit it (you sissy), message me with your friend code. We'll get together and place dress up.....errr.....Halo.

2) Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo Wii
Rally round the family, pocket full of turtle shells.
Rally round the family, pocket full of turtle shells.

Mario once again proves that any title staring him never gets old (Except for Mario Party.......damn you Hudson Soft). With a plethora of control options (the Wii Wheel isn't so great, sadly), pick-up-and-play ease, and the addition of global multiplayer, this is the definitive Mario Kart experience. Best of all, the game brings back some of the best tracks from the franchises history with graphic overhauls. If you have a Wii, this game is a MUST for your collection. I've logged in countless hours with my friends in front of my television. Mario Kart parties are sure to continue at my place through 2009.

1) Fable II (Xbox 360)
I can't escape the snow. Even in video games.
I can't escape the snow. Even in video games.

Fable II is my favorite game of 2008, hands down. The visuals are great, the story is great, the fat dirty hooters are great. In my opinion, Fable II was Lionhead's "How you like me now" entry into the video game world. The game improved just about EVERYTHING from the first installment. Sure, there were bugs (which were just patched) and there were probably things I would have done different. But overall, the game left me very satisfied and definitely had me coming back for more. Not much more to say here. If you haven't played it, please give it a shot.

Honorable Mentions

Here are some games that while I did like, I didn't feel deserved a place on the top 5. They are in no particular order.

  • LittleBigPlanet (Playstation 3)
  • God of War: Chains of Olympus (Sony PSP)
  • Prince of Persia (Played on Xbox 360)
  • Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo DS)
  • Boom Blox (Nintendo Wii)

Stay tuned for Part 2, in which I list The Not-So-Great of 2008. Expect it later tonight or sometime tomorrow.

Thanks for reading.
