It came out in 2012 so am I missing something? Was it released digitally in 2013?
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Game » consists of 12 releases. Released Nov 08, 2012
The player takes the position of town mayor in this version of Animal Crossing for the Nintendo 3DS.
So why did this get mentioned during GOTY?
@dietomaha: New Leaf was a mid-2013 release in North America and Europe. Maybe it was a 2012 release in Japan?

Yep!
Phew, another mystery solved, gang! Now what?

There's a ghost out at the Johnson's farm causing the milk to curdle.
Because it came out in 2013 and it's delightful.
Well at least one of those things is true.

Regardless of when it came out, this game is terribly over-hyped. Animal Crossing worked back on the GCN, only because facebook games were not a thing yet. Now with social media games and the phone market, there are plenty of games that are free or close to free that do everything AC: new leaf does and more.
It's super weird, because New Leaf, more than any other Nintendo game, should have all manner of SpotPass and Internet connectivity, which it does a little bit, but it's really still the same game as all the previous Animal Crossings. I don't think that makes it a bad game, but they probably could've pushed it forward and evolved it much more (see also: many other Nintendo series).
@dudeglove: That's a really intelligent idea!
@dudeglove: There actually is a Plaza-style Animal Crossing application for the Wii U.
If animal crossing was literally the wii u plaza thing, I would buy a wii u thing
Add to that the virtual console purchases being arcade cabinets I could put in my animal crossing home and I'd buy a wii u thing too.
So, Giantbomb doesn't keep track on release dates per region? That's kinda sad. Wikipedia does.
Is there data there but not surfaced?
@noizy: It says right at the top that the game has 9 releases and was released first on November 8, 2012.

Yea. It doesn't track the date of each release on a per region/platform basis, just the first, right? It's not a big deal, but I'm surprised Wikipedia has more granular data than the GB wiki for that kind of stuff.
@noizy: Click where it says 9 releases, also there is an entire tab for releases on the game page.
