Overview

Anthropomorphism is the concept of taking any non-human item, whether it be an animal, inanimate object, or a conceptual idea, and personifying it with human characteristics. These characteristics in turn may either be physical or otherwise. Anthropomorphism has been depicted throughout the history of mankind in mythology, storytelling, entertainment and religion.

Examples

Anthropomorphism, the Furry Fandom and Animal Based Anthropomorphism

Furry anthropomorphism is not exclusively the only category of anthropomorphism. Though it is among the first categories to come to mind for many internet users and is a central theme to the Furry subculture. Games that are often ascociated with this fandom or have gained heavy interest from this fandom for the specific theme of anthropomorphism include, but are not limited to: Conker's Bad Fur Day and Conker: Live and Reloaded, Dust: An Elysian Tail, The Elder Scrolls series, World of Warcraft, the Star Fox series, Sly Cooper series, Beyond Good and Evil, Sonic and Ratchet and Clank.

Interest in characters not necessarily considered anthropomorphic as they are unique races and creations in themselves, do catch the interest of the fandom. Turians, Lombaxes, Bothans, and certain mythological creatures such as centaurs which are not based on animals directly, seem to gather interest. The furry fandom is primarily interested in anthropomorphism which encompasses anthropomorphic animals.

Furry anthropomorphism has significant underlying themes and tastes within, followed by distinct interests and concepts within anthropomorphism.

Gijinka Anthropomorphism

A stylized subset of anthropomorphism that was born in Japan that attributes "moe" manga/anime characteristics to everyday objects. Such targets of this style have included video game consoles and computer operating systems. Such characters are sometimes referred to as "-tans." (ex: console-tans, OS-tans.) The game Hyperdimension Neptunia features a number of such gijinka characters. The main character, Neptune, is a gijinka inspired by the never-released Sega Neptune console. Other characters, such as IF and Nisa are personifications of video game developers like Idea Factory and Nippon Ichi Software.

Other Forms of Anthropomorphism

Soul Calibur's infamous possessed sword, Soul Edge, could be deemed to have these attributes. Artificial Intelligence and robots, such as terminators and EDI, bear qualities such as speech and speech with self consciousness, respectively.
