I read some crackpot theory on the Gamespot forums that Anya might be the Locust Queen.  It would make for an interesting twist but to me that theory just sounds ridiculous.

Marcus Fenix is the locust queen. Listen to the intro to Gears 2 carefully.

    copypaste from Gamefaqs
     http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/991468-gears-of-war-3/60473916

    • The Locust lived underground for a long time, while the humans lived on surface. Everything was cool. Locusts lived near/around Imulsion, but it was in a slowly-evolving state. This is why it got into their cells but didn’t mutate them. (Also why the device in the end of Gears 3 killed the Locusts that weren’t lambent.)

    • Humans (long ago) started running out of fuel and discovered imulsion. A scientist discovered “lightmass processing” which turned imulsion into a viable fuel source.

    • Some imulsion miners began to develop “Rustlung” which is an imulsion sickness.

    • Since they don’t know of any other fuel source at this point, the government wanted to cure imulsion sickness to keep using the fuel. They still didn’t know about the locusts but they discovered a “Rock Creature” and captured it for study. This was one of the locusts who wasn’t lambent but as said earlier they had a stronger resistance to imulsion from living down there.

    • Scientists run tests on the locust and begin to attempt to mix his genes with some of the miners who had developed Rustlung, and then subsequently the children of those miners. The Miners were too far gone, but the children were born with altered cells and presented a higher probability of success. This was done at the New Hope Research Facility. The experiments were largely a failure, and the children are taken into the mountain while the miners became sires. This is why the sires are so different, as they are humans mixed with locust genes with a tiny bit of lambent.

    • A Gears 2 collectible talks of one subject who was a success, a perfect human-Locust hybrid who is immune to Imulsion sickness. Her name was Ruth and I believe she was just a child at the time. Probably angry at the brutality of the tests done by humans (her own people) she took to leading the Locusts and became Queen Myrrah.

    • It seems very likely that Lightmass processing caused the imulsion to start evolving more rapidly. Groups of locust tribes that lived closer to high concentration of imulsion turned lambent and broke off from the regular locust or more likely were shunned from their society as dangerous or freaks of nature. These Lambent were only slightly different, not yet mutating.

    • A war starts between the Locusts and the Lambent. Queen Myrrah comes into contact with Adam Fenix, who probably was a young scientist at New Hope when she was there. (complete speculation) He wants to help her but for whatever reason can’t.

    • Queen Myrrah is running out of options and plans to attack the surface and take over. She doesn’t even attempt a peaceful resolution, given her history with the human government. Emergence Day happens and the humans enter a war with the Locusts and have no idea why. (only Adam Fenix knew, and he then told the COG government who kept it secret.)

    • Remember how lightmass processing probably accelerated the evolution of imulsion and caused the lambent? At the end of Gears 1 the humans detonate a lightmass bomb in the tunnels in an effort to kill the locusts. This lightmass bomb kills many locusts but gives the living imulsion accelerated growth capabilities.

    • It’s also important to remember that the structures they find underground point out that the locust have lived there for a long, long time without any problems. The sudden growth of the imulsion ‘virus’ over the course of 80-some years is what caused their new conflict with the new lambent tribes.

    • By the time Gears 3 comes around, lambency now causes stalks to grow out of the ground and lambent locusts mutate to an insane degree. Flooding the Hollow probably helped spread the lambent virus through the earth and sea.

    • People living near mining towns, and who probably already had slight rustlung get overtaken by imulsion and become lambent humans. They, however, don’t have the same built-up resistance to it, so while the locusts become stronger, the human lambent just crumble and explode.

Too bad in Gears3 they never touch about how the COG was running a covert baby making factory.

I wanna know why the Locust were such brutal dicks.

It kinda lessened the impact of Gears 3 for me, as they weren't sympathetic in the slightest.

Thats not right. Marcus dad says he was in contact with the locusts before they even showed up above ground.
