" @The_Laughing_Man: Pretty much. They might have even flipped that switch before the announcement. And, yeah, the rumor is that the game cost $100 million to make and only sold about 10,000 copies. "Makes me wonder what was the largest video game flop ever?

That's easy." @drhans said:

" @Megalon said:Can not have a ER when the servers are gone." Not like this. "@Lukeweizer said:" ENDURANCE RUN "These. "
" @Cube said:We saw it already, it was called "Quicklook: APB". By the end of it, Jeff had endured all he could." They should do an endurance run like they did with the Matrix online. "I don't know if "APB" and "Endurance" really go together. "
Wanna hear a joke?
Private Servers
Always Available
HAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAH, I know, right? Always available. Man... who comes up with this shit?
To echo the sentiments on a UK forum, the gamer may have lost $50 but this was a developer's life for three years. To see your creative work die so suddenly must be heartbreaking. It's just a game to us but when it's your mortgage or rent check on the line that shit gets real pretty quickly. From the stories coming out of the company, it seems they were in hell for a long time before release and in the end just hoping for good reviews and decent sales. RIP APB ...
" @The_Laughing_Man: Matrix was considered an "Endurance Run." Endure it's run to the end. "The servers for APB are gone. They can not make a video unless they literary jumped on when that news was released.
" @Legend said:There is quite a difference of a game that lasted years before being taken down and a game that lasted a few months. Still I guess they could just enable tons of crap for the hell of it." @Megalon said:Something tells me that these guys won't even have the creative spirit to end the servers in a cool way. Maybe they'll increase everyone's in-game money or something, but I doubt they'll make shit go all ape-shit like in Matrix Online. Either way, I'd like it if at least a couple of the guys sat around for the final hour of the servers or something. "" Not like this. ""
" @drhans: Sounds to me like it sold 9,000 too much. I guess the game has good customization, but it didn't look fun. Like, at all. In any way, shape or form. Most of it looked like the ultimate fetch quest and the rest looked like same shooting. I really don't understand the kind of person who looks at a game that's no fun to play and says "I'd like to buy that game, then pay 15 dollars a month for it" where games like TF2 are 20 dollars flat and can offer as much longevity, and are actually fun. "As a major TF2 nut myself, I completely agree.
Didnt even play the game but I feel a little sad for it. A horrible mismatch of outrageous expenses, poor development and bad price plans. Couldve been so much more. Or at least lasted til christmas.

" Holy shit man, I knew APB wasn't doing so hot -- but shutting down this fast? Damn dude, it's been what 2 months since release? When is the last time a MMO crashed and burned this fast? "Got to be Tabula Rasa right? "
Just looked it up because I was curious. Apparently Tabula Rasa ran from November 2007, to February 2009. Sure didn't seem like it lasted that long -- who knew?
Are the servers for Crime Craft still up, anyone?
APB was alive for about 79 days, before they shut it down. That's got to be some kind of record.
I didn't buy the game and people can say what they want but a large group of people just lost 3 years of their life, their jobs, and face the very real danger of not being able to find work in what they want to do and trained for due to the negative stigma of this event. This is just plain shitty news to read and I feel sorry for the people who worked there. As for the dumb ass upper management who allowed obvious incompetent lackwits to be in charge and crappy 100 millions dollars down the toilet? You got what you deserved, I just wish the people who were worth a damn didn't have to go down with you.
Wow, really? I figured with all the time and money they poured into the thing they would at least find a way to keep it up and see if they could make some money off it somehow. I've never heard of an MMO going down only a couple months after release like this. I mean, the game looks crappy, I saw the quick look, but it could be fixed. Look at how much WOW has changed over the years. I guess the money wasn't there and no other companies wanted to buy the thing.
" APB was alive for about 79 days, before they shut it down. That's got to be some kind of record. "It's the John Turner of MMOs.
Realtime worlds will never make another game, between the already bad layoffs, their less than stellar Crackdown sequel, and their 100 million dollar budget for a game that tanked, they are dead in the water I think, who would hire them to make anything that isnt a DSIware game?
This game had SO much potential. Makes me sad. I was so hyped for this game for years before its release. And now... this is the outcome.
I'm sad :[
Pretty much any MMO I ever have interest in winds up tanking. It seems to be a curse. I managed to persuade my online buddies to get this game with me Day one. And now they're all pissed at me for making them waste their money. I knew the content they were launching with wasn't much, but I was sincerely hoping that with the funds they got right off would make for some amazing support content. Talks about the chaos district and zombie district offered hope for many paying customers.
le sigh.
Also, previous mmos that I've been into that are tanking/tanked: Tabula Rasa and Aion. I'm sad to say that I"m very much interested in Guild Wars 2. Hopefully I don't murder that game as well.
I'm a terrible person :(
I never got to play this game cause I was waiting for it become free-to-play and what happened to them saying they were going to add a huge patch to update the game?
I smell a End of days endurance run for the last couple of days before it finally goes down. Also kinda funny how the Matrix Online lasted longer than APB.
"How can a game be such a failure? Did they hire zero playtesters and have monkeys for programmers? Geez. Throw 100 million dollars at a crowd of random people and you could probably get a better result than this. "
Actually, there were about a thousand or more, even had a public/private servers for people who had reserved the copy or had tested beforehand. I was one of the '3rd wave' testers known as the Sharpshooters who were supposed to test the gameplay. Many of us thought that the gameplay was lacking and while we had been working on balencing, we thought it was lacking overall.
I was one of the people who actually -liked- the game. It's sad for me to see it dissapear so soon, like the supporters post-mortem said, it had potential, but there were enough bugs with it to mess it over in one way or another.
The payment system I actually didn't have a problem with, it was just like any other MMO, but with the potion for people who don't grind MMOs, so the optional pay for hours method was great for them where they may not play all month and ahve leftover time at the end of the month.
