It would be awesome once this mod could becomes more polished, or If some developer could make a full polished game like this. Add greater production value into the mood and settings and it would be an awesome zombie survival game. It would be also cool if you could bard doors to keep the zombies out at night of shelter and stuff like that,

I think they actually are thinking about turning it into a standalone game.

I really hope so!

Just finished my firs (~4h) session. Awesome. I thought the first person I meet will just shoot me and I maybe live for 10 minutes. Not the case. I think I must have been super lucky. I met 5 different people none of which shot me. First I raided a field hospital with a duder and gave him a blood transfusion.

Later I was lying in the grass and I really needed to pee. I heard gunshot not far away and were really afraid to just leave when a dude came up to me, I was sure this guy would be my killer but and asked him if he was going to kill me. He said he wouldn't and I asked if he could watch my back while I go to the bathroom. He said he would and I told him he could steal anything from me. After I came back he just said peace and went his own way, nothing was taken from me.

I went inland since I thought that would be safer than the cities and found a bunch of loot and killed many zombies. After going around searching barns and whatnot for maybe an hour I decided to go towards the coast again. I met up with a dude that was searching for a broken helicopter and I tagged along with him. We looted and killed and after a rough battle I gave him a blood transfusion too, We met up with an another player who came with us too. We ran around for a while and passed by another duder too. Unfortunately my internet connection failed me and I got disconnected. I hope that guy finds the heli and repairs it. tl;dr: the game is awesome.

I bet when I go back in a player will kill me immediately. :>

This game really is both awesome and terrible. Being a huge ARMA fan (back to op flash) I am able to overlook many of the bugs/annoying arma things to see the awesome, punishing game beneath. But this mod really has some terrible setup. Right now, the Day Z servers are completely overloaded with people. A lot of people have purchased ARMA II combined ops for this mod, and will be very disappointed. The problem with the game is the persistence between servers. It is neat, but it is also a complete chokepoint for gaming. If each hosted server would have it's own persistence, the terrible lag/login nonsense seen today would be gone.

In Operation Flashpoint, there was an awesome zombie mod very similar to this one, (you started as a squad of marines, and had a humvee) but it was the same expansive wasteland of a world. The great part about this zombie mod was that could could play it in a LAN server, and we played it at our LANs we had.

I don't understand why the cross-server persistence is neccessary. The DayZ forums are full of people having server connection problems, and the dev response is "They are overloaded, keep trying". Things are basically like an MMO on launch day. I really hope they open up the game for LAN play and offline play. It would kick ass, and solve a lot of their server troubles.

This seems really cool and could be hella fun with some friends, but I want to wait until it's a bit more polished and hopefully released in standalone form. It's an experience I wouldn't want ruined by excessive jank.

You got insanely lucky there duder, pretty much every person i have met in this game tried to shoot me or we both got into a Mexican standoff and walked away slowly from each other.

TRUST NO ONE!

This is how a zombie survival game should be. A bigger budget company should take note.

I played this mod a bit. It firmly confirmed my theory that people are gigantic assholes.

If any of you see a player by the name of "insaneshadow", then that's me! =D

I got lucky and stumbled upon a farm/factory place that had a sniper rifle, a crossbow, an enfield rifle and a bunch of food and flares. I've been avoiding people since I don't know who to trust but if any of you see me on the same server as you, then we should group up.

@owack6:

I know. People were super nice all around. They answered all the noob questions that I and some other people asked in the chat and were generally really helppful. I'm fully prepared to get shot in the bag next time.

Has anybody had any problems with being kicked from every server because of some BattleEye issue? I keep getting: "Cannot join game: Unknown version of game" or something to that effect. I've got V 1.60 of OA and I've got the most recent version of BattleEye installed. I've searched online in several different spots and can't seem to find a fix. :/

So I guess I'm just the luckiest survivor ever. Another 3 hour session and I met a super nice guy with whom I shared ammo and food and sneaked in and out of cities without shooting a single zombie. This game is magic. The new update is pretty crazy, you don't have any chance in a city agains zombies and even small barns and such can be surrounded by 10+ zombies.

I'd pay money to play co-op with him.

Would be scary as hell if that was the case. There is another video with some other people having fun with him

With all of the cool stuff that almost happens in the alpha, imagine how much cooler it'll be when it actually happens in the full release!

I've had zero problems playing this mod. Easy to get in and play! Take 3 minutes tops. My best game of 2012!

#71 Posted by insane_shadowblade85 (1389 posts) -

New update causes more zombies to spawn. Apparently it's a side effect of fixing some issues with the zombies, but the developers are leaving it the way it is to see what they can learn. Night time in a city is now 100 times more scarier. I hope we can get a TNT of this, or even just a private server so we can play with each other but I remember hearing that renting servers for this game is expensive.

My third session is done. I have now been alive ~10h. Once again I met a really nice guy and we rolled together for few hours. Also another guy passed by peacefully. So I have met almost a dozen people and none of them have shot me and I have rolled around with 4 of them for an extended period of time. I left off with 99 zombies killed, I was temped to just pop one for the round number, but it was getting dark and I didn't want to risk it.

The atmosphere is incredible. We were in a small shack where I watched his back while he AFK making coffee and when he came back we were suddenly and without any apparent reason rushed by ~10 zombies. It was scary as fuck and I don't think I breathed for a minute while we were shooting for our lives. I have just a ridiculous amount of ammo and I also found a bigger bag which came really handy since I have had to make some really tough choices before. I'm amazed I'm still alive.

Yeaahhhh, I already need this in my life. But I need to hold off until after these uni exams, or I will fail. Without question.

I'm afraid to log on because I found some binoculars which I like having but I have no idea how far I am from water. I guess it does take over an hour to die, though.

Anyone know why there's always a constant stream of people asking what server they're playing on?

Came to share my initial impressions/fun. This happened a few weeks ago and some of you may hate me for it. I already had the Arma games needed to play, so at the request of a friend I download this "Day Z" mod that I had never heard of. I ended up running for 45 minutes to find my friend, after which we met up with a bro he had met the previous day. We have fun exploring and all that. In the middle of a zombie engagement I accidentally shot our new friend in the face, killing him. I'm not being facetious, it was an accident.

We find out where he spawned and we went to give him back his stuff. The three of us are all communicating via skype. He lets us know that he's stumbled upon a group of new players struggling out near the coast. He lets them know we are coming to help them out. My character is starving, we haven't found food in hours. We realize all of these new players will have food/supplies with them. Me and the new friend decide we are totally going to jump these guys. My real life friend wants nothing to do with this, and is just laughing on skype.

We let our victims know we are looking on our maps to find a place to go. They're all crouched and looking the other way, constantly asking us "So, where are we going guys?". Neither myself nor my accomplice can start the shooting, so I start a countdown from 5. At 0 I hosed everyone down with the shotgun. 3 of them rage quit immediately upon death. The other two stayed just long enough to tell the Clan/group on the server our names and location. Real life happened and we all logged off for awhile. The next day some update rolled out and reset the Humanity ranking, meaning my St Valentines Day Massacre: Part 2 was without consequence. I logged back on to find a stranger walking around near my location. I was hidden. I saw him shoot a person in the face and walk away. Fearing for my life, I gunned this person down. I approached the scene and realized he shot a zombie that he somehow hadn't aggro'd. The accompanying player death message at the time of zombie kill was a coincidence. I met up with my real friend and we ran off into the woods. I have yet to die and am still a Bandito with aviators clipping through my face scarf. I haven't had this much fun in a long time.

EDIT: Sorry for wall.

I've watched this mod being played on twitch for some hours and have to say it looks really interesting and alot of fun IF you are ready to log some serious amount of hours.. It's a nice idea and there seems to be players who really take it seriously and are really immersed in the hole survival/military simulation. I hope it will survive long enough to see itself out of alpha and maybe even beta. Interested too see the end result.

Well once you are in a server there is no way of looking up the server name. Because it's often hard to get in people just spam different servers until they get in and thus have no idea what server they are on. I have asked a few times when I have met nice people on a server and there has been no lag or anything to know to come back if possible.

Dude, you shot Marvin?!

@Zaccheus: That makes sense. I thought maybe they were all just wanting to tell their friends where to go.

#79 Posted by Zaccheus (1788 posts) -

@eccentrix: Well that's another excellent reason to ask. It's sucks that there is no way of seeing the server name.

#80 Posted by insane_shadowblade85 (1389 posts) -

I had two chances to play with people during the night time in this game and both times my session timed out. The last guy even had a mic and was using Direct Communication, and when I climbed down down the crane to walk over to him, the server crashed. It's scary at night so I was pretty disappointed that I wasn't able to properly play with those people. I'm just wondering if it was my session that ended or if everyone was booted from the server like I was. I'd hate for those players to think that I was anti-social or something.

Got back from another night of playing DayZ and I was actually able to play with another player for a while until, once again, the session stopped. It started with me loading in on top of a roof in Elektro, because I thought it would be an awesome idea to log off on the roof of a tall building with no ammo and no food. After getting off of the roof, I met with a group of players in the area, but, things didn't go that well right off the bat. One player lost connection and then the other player ended up dying when we were ambushed by like 30 zombies. Me and the other surviving player, Rainbow Danger Dash, ended up meeting with someone else and made our way to a school and hospital.

We basically got our asses handed to us by "the horde". I loaded back in a half hour later and met up with Rainbow again. We decided to go to another player near Cherno and help him out. That didn't go as planned since, when we were getting real close he typed in, and I quote "help!"; then he died. And then the session ended. I was having a bunch of fun actually playing with someone else who didn't try to shoot me in the face and we were going to meet up with another group of survivors! I'm looking forward to when the servers, or mother server, is more stable.

A picture of our trek to Chern to help another player. It ended with a lost session. NEVER FORGET! *Salutes*
