1 vs. 100 Scrapped; Host Wanted A Season 3

Chris Cashman told me that he was ready for a third season.

After just two full seasons of Xbox Live trivia game 1 vs. 100 LiveMicrosoft silently put the kibosh on the social project with official word  hitting the blog rounds this morning. A couple of days ago, even its four-time Emmy award winning host, Chris Cashman, was uncertain of its fate.

"Just sitting here with no live audience or questions to ask," Chris Cashman told me via e-mail when I approached him about the future of the project before Microsoft announced that it was canned. "Sad, right?" he asked. "I sometimes wake up and think we are still in the middle of the season and get excited to see the Mob looking back at me, only to then realize that it's just me in my lame infinity mirror."

That's Cashman; he's an oft-hilarious personality that added flavor to what would have been an otherwise dull affair. 1 vs. 100 Live was an interactive game show where one player, dubbed the One, tests his pop culture trivia might against a panel of 100 random participants called the Mob.

In a statement, Microsoft general manager Dave McCarthy confirmed that the project was cancelled at around 10 AM. "When we started on this journey, we knew we were creating an entirely new genre of entertainment that would be a continually evolving concept," he said. "We're very proud of the 1 vs 100 team and their accomplishments, and are excited to apply what we've learned to future programming."

== TEASER ==The dichotomy between The One and the Mob is what made 1 vs. 100 special. The Mob answers the same questions The One does, and both can earn prizes.

People who answered questions wrong got removed. For the Mob, removal meant better prizes. For the One, it meant he was one step closer to the ultimate prize: Xbox Live Marketplace Points. The audience, which was the sum total of the rest of the players, answered the questions, too. They just didn't have the chance to earn prizes; rather, bragging rights against friends.

Cashman's job was to inject the show with his colorful commentary, full of quick wit and jabs at some of the more obnoxious screen names. He also steered the program, telling the audience when a commercial break was coming, or announcing a new round of the game after The One won or was eliminated.

 Snap.
 Snap.
But now his show is canceled. Before he knew (and I'm not sure he does just yet), he was forced to give me the standard PR line. "Seriously, no official word has been announced about 1 vs. 100 season three," Cashman said, shifting his tone for just a few seconds.

At the end of the second season, Cashman must have felt like the project was about to be canned. Cashman told me that he prodded the game's audience and fans to write Microsoft about wanting more of the show. He jokingly added that he considered going on tour like Conan O'Brien while he waited for word from Microsoft.

 The Mob.
 The Mob.
We know now that the word will never come. In mid-April the developers and outreach folks behind the game went silent on Twitter and Facebook, much like the game's blog... until this afternoon.

One of the last official tweets, a reply to a fan, echoed the previously known official line on a possible third season of the online quiz show: "Sorry, nothing to share on future plans just yet," it reads. "Thanks, for checking."

Lead staff members, like director of development Manual Bronstein and director of game development Jo Clowes have moved to other companies in this interim period, piling on suspicion that it was canned.

Cashman was still hopeful in our conversation, although, I wasn't armed with all this information when we spoke the other night.

"The folks at Xbox are no doubt scheming on ways to advance the technology, so with any luck, we'll return and I'll finally host from the International Space Station."

"Perhaps they're addressing my request to incorporate smell in the game?"

The One.
The One.
Shifting again. "I wish I had something definitive to tell you, but the reality is that I am just another member of the crowd at this point."

1 vs. 100 Live debuted during Microsoft's keynote at CES 2009. An excited Robbie Bach stormed the stage and demoed it in front of a less-than-enthusiastic crowd, showing off its social features and at least one trivia question.

" In "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," who plays a character that ages in reverse?," one question read. The options are: (X) Johnny Depp, (A) Fred Thompson, and (B) Brad Pitt.

This is where Cashman would say something if he had a show.

A troubling aside in 1 vs. 100's disappearance is the fate of Xbox Live Primetime, the vehicle for the show. At CES, Microsoft said it had plans to offer other kind of content via the service, but with 1 vs. 100 possibly gone, does that mean Xbox Live Primetime and its promise is as well? Remember, McCarthy said the words "future programming." Microsoft also has mentioned that the rest of the 1 vs. 100 team and its tech is now using being used on future projects.

 I'm glad he's happy.
 I'm glad he's happy.
Cashman said 1 vs. 100 was the most fun he's ever had, and the fact that he's still getting recognized because of his work is telling. The man has had an impact.

"I was actually stopped in the San Diego airport by someone who recognized me from the game," he said. "It was a pretty awesome moment to realize that this new technology was really creating a live interactive experience that actually resonated with people."

It had an impact. It had style. And it was an excellent recreation of a game show that I had a great time with while it was on. Cashman was hopeful that it could come back, same as I was, but it wasn't meant to be.

this really blows.

It was probably the best trivia experience on consoles, and it even got some of my friends and family into buying gold accounts just for this. I would have figured with MS's push for casuals with Kinect, something like this would be a no brainer and would only have attracted more attention.

MS reminds me of Stewart from MADTV.
MS: LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!!!
*starts to do something interesting and then fail miserably a short time later*
Good Job MS, you are the Stewart of the gaming industry.

It's sad, but there were parts of that game that just felt like they were poorly explained or missing something. Last time I checked here in the UK, we straight up didn't have a host and the avatar just mouthed silently while the woman on the show floor just said canned phrases. I didn't really understand how the mob worked either for a long time, then was kinda let down after realising I was in the crowd every game. Eventually, you give up trying because the odds are so low.

What really pisses me off about all this is MS didn't give an actual reason.  Was it simply not making enough money?   This really saddens me. Hell, I'd pay 800 points for a new season w/ less advertising, and the ability to play the after the new season ends using all existing questions.

THIS was a social experience that united core and casual gamers. Kinect is a load of shit.

1v100 was actually pretty cool. I enjoyed it even with some technical problems early on. Though I have to imagine that like myself most people stopped playing when the newness wore off. I wonder what the numbers were like at the end of Season 2.

1vs100 was a ton of fun with friends, especially when they knew the answers.          :P             It is a bummer to see it go away though.  I guess I will never get the S-Rank for it.        :(

I had such a blast with this game. Honestly I was able to wrangle together more of my friends to play this than any other multiplayer game. I would like to think that they have something planned to replace this.

You and me both, duder. I want more. The game even made my top of '09 list. It was fun to get a big XBL party going and have a trivia night sort of thing.

That was a great time-waster of a game, and I am pretty much a trivia whore.  It's a shame that it got cancelled, but I'm sure we'll see something like it somewhere else down the line.

Aww man, I've been waiting for this to come  back for ages.  Me and a load of guys would get smashed and play this every friday.  I won The Maw and N+, coming 2nd and just missing out on being The One by 83 points out of tens of thousands.

For this enterprise to succeed - it has to be funded.  Microsoft never intended to foot the bill for it I assume, which is why they had advertising.  Considering only a few sponsors (Sprint, Progressive, etc..) seemed to be involved, I bet securing sponsorships was a hard sell.  Advertisers in general are not risk takers - they know and understand the size of a TV audience - the audience for a live online game is far far smaller.

I don't see why it had to end if it had a consistent following.  My friends and I all played it.  And so did my family.  And so did my friends' families.  It's the exact "casual" game that they've been searching for, and it doesn't condescend with "Waaater look at the waaaater!"  Grandmas would rather play a nice, fun trivia game than jump around with Skittles.

Also, it's infuriating that there are achievement points that I'll never be able to get.  Way to care about your own ingenuity, Microsoft.

I loved 1 vs 100, and I'm sad to hear that it's going bye-bye.  At the same time, the setup was flawed.

Week in and week out, it always seemed to be the same guys in the top spots, making it feel entirely impossible for any of us regular Joes actually get a chance at points and/or DL games.

All I know is that I'm glad to have an S-rank in it.  = D

I originally thought that the game was just taking a break or something months ago, but when I saw it wasn't on the dashboard this summer I knew it could only mean bad things for this game.  It does suck thats its gone it was a perfect time waster for when my friends and I didn't want to play other games or had no idea what to do.

This is the weirdest thing. It was sooooo popular at the end of last year/beginning of this year and then season 2 was over and it seemed to drop off the face of the earth. Way to go Microsoft on throwing something away that thousands of people participated in and could have been really cool had you iterated on it. This just doesnt make sense to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like the Primetime Channel on Xbox Live is also scrapped as well. If so then Microsoft needs to seriously re-focus what they want to do.

Great, the first good and unique thing xbox live had going for them, and they canned it. That sucks. I barely play xbox games online anymore, so I doubt I'd renew my Gold account once it goes, now. I had a lot of fun while it lasted though.

This was exactly what I was going to say.  Even if she was just sitting there watching she would still shout answers out and play along.  I thought this was one of the most unique things on any gaming console going.  I agree that I would have actually used a few Microsoft points a season if I could keep playing with friends after the season was over.

I can't fathom why Microsoft would get rid of 1v100. It had to be profitable, right? I mean, how can the cost of maintaining the game possibly be greater than the revenue from advertisers? It's incredibly disappointing to see it go, and even more disappointing to think that we'll probably see nothing like it for a long time.
