2008's Game of the Year, As Chosen By You

Today's the day we reveal the results of your votes and the game you chose as the best of 2008.

The war economy!
The war economy!
Remember those laid-back days of late December, when all we had to do was sit around, hang out, watch TV, and check out the daily updates to Giant Bomb's year-end awards? Me too. It was glorious. One day I slept in until like 4PM. It was crazy.

Along with our own awards, we also asked you to pitch in and vote on your favorite game of the year. We figured we'd give you guys a few weeks to cast some votes and reveal the winner on January 15th. It seemed so far away, like some far-flung future where the police have been replaced by robots and cars drive themselves.

As it turns out, today is January 15th. I got a hand-written parking ticket yesterday from an actual, human cop. And as much as I tried to let go of the wheel while driving in this morning, the car simply would not steer itself. I was pretty disappointed.

But there's no disappointment involved when it comes to your voting. The votes have been cast and the winner has been chosen. Your game of 2008, as voted by you or people like you, is...

It's true. You all like Solid Snake's latest (final?) adventure. Unless you were among the 14 percent that voted for the #2 game, Grand Theft Auto IV. From there it breaks down into smaller chunks, with games like Fallout 3, LittleBigPlanet, and Gears of War 2 doing reasonably well. Others did pretty poorly, though. Infinite Undiscovery? Zero votes. Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit? Not one of you thought it was the best game of 2008. Not even Vinny.

Can't say I'm too surprised by that. If you listened to our year-ending podcast, you know that we tossed and turned over GTA4 and MGS4 for hours before making our choice. I probably would have been happy with either choice, and it's neat that it's winning a top award from all y'all.

I kinda bounced between MGS4 and GTA IV myself. Aside from both having the number 4 attached to their titles, they both had a lot of good things going for them and both had their share of blemishes. But, MGS4 lost because of large pimple on the forehead of an otherwise cute college girl.

I know Kojima loves him some cutscenes. I get it. I've understood that since Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation. But when I can get up, cook dinner, eat it, and still have time to shower and catch the very last confrontation at the end, it becomes excessive. I dilligently watched every last cutscene my first time through. GTA IV takes it by a nose. Although, with MGS4's hideously long nose, just barely.

I didn't choose MGS4, mainly because I hadn't played it.  Now I am.  I've made it through Act 1, and so far the games seems promising.

I chose WoW: WotLK, but I may change my mind; I doubt it, but I might.

"What I'm surprised about is how few gamers knew about Valkyria Chronicles.  Sure, there wasn't a massive marketing campaign behind it, but a few of the top gaming sites such as 1UP, IGN, and Gamespot have all done features on the game"

I think if you are looking for this type of game you would find it. I don't go that often on those sites and when I go I usually look only for the news and reviews that interest me (such as the MGS articles on GiantBomb). Even the game sites from my country only recently reviewed this game. So I didn't really know about it, and I came to know it after the NPD numbers articles and the word of mouth hype.

I got the impression that Sonic Unleashed was way higher in Sega's priority list  than Valkyria Chronicles, and the latter is a gem that will influence other games and probably have sequels.

"I gave mine to Valkyria Chronicles. Mostly out of pity because of its shitty treatment in the US (It's a great game guys!). "

I am curious to see how this game will do. All the hype around it is word of mouth because Sega didn't market it enough. I had no idea this game even existed until I saw the standard "PS3 sucks" rant on the internet.

A lot of people bought it after they learned about it, like myself. I think despite the slow start and Sega's non-marketing, it is going to sell very well.

great game.  loved playing the gameplay portions.  the cinematic quality of the cutscenes were top notch but the story was absolutely infantile.  ryan got it right in the podcast:  "whenever those characters opened their mouths--horseshit."

Blech.  MGS4 was one of the prettiest crappy games I ever suffered through.  The gameplay was stretched gossamer-thin over the bloated, self-important plot.  My least favorite of all the MGS games.  I guess thousands of gamers really can be wrong...

I gave mine to Valkyria Chronicles. Mostly out of pity because of its shitty treatment in the US (It's a great game guys!). MGS4 is my top game of the year though and I'm glad we could agree on that at least.

"Splinter Cell : Double Agent. 2006."

I own this game for the PC and it is not even close. You can optionally rescue some hostages from being executed, but that's not even comparable. One of the sides won't say "Thanks" and let you pass without shooting you because of it. In MGS4 it is part of the game mechanic, even mentioned on the manual of the game, to use the conflict on your favor, so you can gain points with one of the sides and be benefited by it.

Splinter Cell is inferior in many aspects, not only in gameplay.

@ Thiago

"Just by thinking that the environment is affected by you. For example, in the first 2 levels, where you can help the rebels in order to get more easily around. What other game has such mechanics. The only thing Americans know is to pull triggers. Any other kind of interaction is too complicated for American developers."

Splinter Cell : Double Agent. 2006.

Take out the Gecko and the opening levels of MGS4 are basically the same as Congolese mission in SC:DA. "Help the rebels or the government troops in the current battle or ignore them? Hmm, what should I do?"

You need to play more games on other platforms. And lose the attitude because it makes you sound like a xenophobic dick.

Ok, fan (in a mocking tone). So would you like to expose rationally what you think that makes it bad?  Everything is so good and it works together beautifully. If we compare it to the standard American game. Gears of War or Doom are a straight line from beginning to end with the same task or mission repeated and Metal Gear has such a variation of gameplay. Even if we compare to those attempts of complex stories, such as Bioshock, what impact did they have? Choose to harvest or not one of those kids? This is the maximum American games can go, and, yes, it is silly.

Just by thinking that the environment is affected by you. For example, in the first 2 levels, where you can help the rebels in order to get more easily around. What other game has such mechanics. The only thing Americans know is to pull triggers. Any other kind of interaction is too complicated for American developers.

MGS4 is epic in a scale no other game is.

Yes, yes,we are sure you are a "big metal gear fan". That game deserve every single praise because it is awesome in so many levels. The story is awesome, the gameplay is even better, the music is excellent, and pace is perfect. Even if we ignore everything else, just the fact that the game doesn't force you to act in only one way is enough to make it GOTY. A lesson for anybody who thinks of developing games."
You're a moron. I could care a less whether you believe whether or not I like the games, but the fact is that I do, and I've played every single one. I didn't say MGS4 was bad, I just don't think it deserves all the praise that it gets, not by far, and that is coming from a fan of the series. Believe what you want, if you want to look stupid.

Good Job Giantbomb users. If this game didn't come out, it would be a hard decision to make. But with it theres no contest really.

Not dissing any of the others either, they all great and overall i've put way more hours into most of them. MGS has moments where you need to stop, take a deep breath and just reflect on the amazing moment that just passed.

Makes you feel bad for people who arn't gamers.
