Digital Extremes to continue where Starbreeze left off.
Dark Sector developer Digital Extremes is hard at work on The Darkness II, publisher 2K Games revealed this morning. The brand new installment in the series, which will see a return of the original game’s quad-fisted action and light versus dark themes, is slated to hit later this Fall 2011 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
2K isn’t putting a lot of information out there this morning, but it did confirm that The Darkness II will be based on the Top Cow comic book series just like the original games was. Also, it'll feature a narrative penned by Paul Jenkins, writer of The Darkness - Volume 1, so no worries on the fiction front.
== TEASER ==2K blasted out a little sampling of what to expect from this game's plot, which, once again, will see Jackie Estacado grappling with the strange forces of The Darkness after violence triggers his weird demon-snake powers. Interestingly, it looks like the story will revolve around Jackie's exploration of the motivations and the powers of the Darkness, as opposed to his raw desire to get revenge after someone close to him was killed the last time around.
It’s been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Franchetti crime family, used The Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. He’s been unable to shake the memory of Jenny’s death since bottling up his supernatural power, and now The Darkness wants out.
A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The botched attempt opens the door for The Darkness to reemerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse, as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.
“Yeah, call me biased, but this second installment of Jackie Estacado’s epic saga is--in my humble opinion--one of the most brutally cool games I’ve ever played,” co-creator of The Darkness comics Marc Silvestri said in a statement. “2K Games hammered this one out of the park.”
No word on other details, but take note of the Xbox Live and PSN logos on the game’s new official Web site. The first game had competitive multiplayer and it looks like The Darkness II will follow suit.

Suffice it to say, the first game's overall gameplay was pretty stiff, but that's not why people played it. You played the first game because the story, narrative, and characterization were fucking PHENOMENAL, and the twist mid-game was goddamn brutal and emotionally charge. Here's to hoping for a bomb-ass game. "

The first one was excellent. It even had working mirrors. I will remain cautiously optimistic. Digital Extreme does not have a history of making good games.
Well, I love the plot so far. i think thats a great approach to focus on the Darkness itself. The first was a real sleeper hit, and one of the more impressive games for its time. I hope this can live up to that, but its not going to have the shock value of "i really wast expecting this to be such a great game" going for it this time around. Its one of the better and prob underrated IPs out there so I hope they treat it like it deserves.
The 1st one was epic and was like playing the role of the main character through a gripping movie, The storyline and Jackie Estacado’s quotes were what made this game great! i still have the 1st game installed on my Xbox harddrive and i still play through it from start to finish! Great news for the 2nd i cant wait and hope its just as good as the 1st one!
Original developers were too busy with eating meatballs or something?
Me being a Starbreeze Studios fan and having a recollection Dark Sector being not so good this news doesnt sound all that good eventhough Darkness II sounds good as I really liked the original. Hopefully this sequel will contain the minor diversions from normal fps action with talking to citizens and doing liltte sidequests for them.
The first one was so incredible with the sound work & Mike Patton. Will have to wait & see on this sequel. If anyone is curious to play the first one it should be quite cheap by now (< $10).

I made it partway through the game, but I kind of ran into the double whammy of motion sickness (which happens occasionally when I play FPS games, but not with most modern ones), and some obnoxious bugs (for example, I left the game on when Jackie was watching "To Kill A Mockingbird" with his girlfriend, and I dozed off. When I woke up, we were on loop two... and Jackie's girlfriend had fallen asleep, and now Jackie couldn't get up from the couch.)
