3DS eShop Set To Launch In May, 3DS Netflix This Summer

3D versions of 2D classics, streaming videos, and more Game Gear games than you'll ever want to play.

If you want to play My Exotic Farm on your 3DS, you'll have to wait until May.
If you want to play My Exotic Farm on your 3DS, you'll have to wait until May.
With all of the detail and software impressions that we've been seeing about the Nintendo 3DS lately, the unanswered questions become more and more interesting. The obvious one? What's up with the Nintendo eShop!?! The company issued some additional details today about its digital offerings.

The digital arm of Nintendo's new handheld will launch after a system update planned for late May in North America and it will offer a few different types of content. A "short-form video service" will let you view trailers for upcoming 3D movies as well as video and screenshots for upcoming 3DS games. Selected music videos and "comedy shorts" will also be available. Because all comedy becomes automatically funnier when presented in 3D.

The 3DS Virtual Console will include games that were originally for the TurboGrafx-16, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Gear. These will appear in 2D, but a new "3D Classics" label will appear on classic games that have been "remastered" in 3D. A web browser and access to the games currently sold on Nintendo's DSiWare store will also be available on the 3DS after this May update, allowing a new generation of handheld owners to experience the majesty and the pagentry of DSiWare for themselves. If you've already purchased some DSiWare software, the May update will also include a way for you to transfer your purchases over to a 3DS.

Nintendo has also announced a deal with AT&T to allow the 3DS to connect automatically to AT&T's network of Wi-Fi hotspots. 3DS owners will have to opt in to the platform's SpotPass service to use the AT&T network.

Lastly, Nintendo has announced that a summer update will bring Netflix instant streaming support to the 3DS, allowng Netflix subscribers to pick up their streaming queue on the new handheld. No word on if this gives Netflix any incentive to start streaming 3D movies, but I'm going to go ahead and say that probably won't happen anytime soon.

OK, so the obvious question then becomes: Which classic games would you like to see remastered in 3D? I think some of the parallax scrolling found on various SNES and Genesis shooters would be a good fit for that look. And the Activision classic, Venetian Blinds, would obviously be huge.

3D content on Netflix for the 3DS sounds kind of awesome. Not in a "killer app" way, but it's definitely a nice incentive for people who were on the fence on the 3DS to consider one.

Good for the kids if their parents are watching episodes of Dexter on the Wii and the little ones want to watch Up or something.

I agree having portable netflix streaming is amazing, although I doubt it'll support high-def.

Still not a day-one purchase for me, after all I just got a PS3.  Maybe at christmas though...

I don't think the new Super Mario game teased by Nintendo was mentioned in the article. It was reported as currently being developed by the same guys behind Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.

I really hope Nintendo would put all VC games on the 3DS, not just the handheld ones and TG16.

Hey, with Game Gear games on the 3DS, kids will get to experience the horror that was Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Game Gear. Except with a less shittier screen. :V

Duuude... you think Netflix will stream movies in 3D? Until Netflix releases an official Android app, I'll probably be using this for my foreseeable mobile Netflix future.

I wish they had it so you could play any Virtual Console games you purchased on the Wii would play on there too.

Portable Netflix sounds sweet. I don't know how I'd get a internet connection on the go, but still cool.

Uh, what about Virtual Boy games? You could probably buy the entire collection on 3DSware for under $100, including imports.

Looks like the train will be entering.... the next dimension.

I don't think anything will really change, though, except everything will be a little bit more "3d-ier". So look forward to a TON of crappy, shovel-ware games which will have stuff fly out of the screen at you, as the sole point of the game! Yep, that's going to be great. Just great.

I make the prediction that roughly 70% of eshop games for the first 4 months will revolve around that tired, lame gimmick alone.

Jeff Gerstmann should be on NOA's payroll at this point. His unbridled/ironic enthusiasm for Nintendo's digital stores are the only promotion they're getting for it. I see his game now; first, he gives Microsoft Game Room some free promotion. Now it's Nintendo's Wiiware/DSiware/e-Shop. He's looking for that big payout from Microsoft and Nintendo! GENIUS :)

I really don't think tacking on 3D to some old games is going to make them any more worthwhile.
Also, I just want SNES and GBA games..
I'm fully prepared for this eShop to be another disaster.

Great, now people can watch netflix while on the toilet. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer watching movies on something with a bigger screen and with better sound, like my home entertainment system. Also I doubt GB/GBC games will look very good, at least have GBA games on there.

I just hope that Nintendo takes a chance on someone in their office who actually turns on the internet to actually design this. Looking at Nintendo's past work of online shops & websites have just been looking like it's made by the dimwit caveman over the average person of today.

Wow that is a mish mash of random features thrown in there.  Netflix?  I mean, ok, but why would I want to stream Netflix on a DS?   Wi-fi through some AT&T system sounds interesting, but does "opt-in" mean "pay for"?

Virtual console is good, but I can't really think of too many memorable games from those systems.  The GB Zelda games maybe, but even the GB Marios weren't that great IMO.

And I continue to be completely uninterested in 3D technology.

While I may not get a 3DS at launch, I will get one soon now that I know I can also play Game Gear and TG16 games alongside Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. One thing I would like to know is whether or not Nintendo will let you re-download the TG16 games you got on the Wii Virtual Console. I didn't grab too many TG16 games on that service but I probably will if they're cross compatible like PSone games are for PSP/PS3.

I'd hope that the eShop gets some more consumer-friendly features like being able to pay exact change for games rather than buying odd amounts of points and always having leftover points. That's mostly killed my interest in buying anything else on WiiWare or VC.

My thoughts exactly. I will get a 3DS eventually, and am very excited to hear that I will be able to get Game Gear and TG16 games for it, but you do raise a valid question on whether or not you have to reload the same games onto the portable system.

@Deathpooky: There's quite a few good Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, actually. Not a whole bunch, mind you, but enough that if Nintendo treats this the same way they've treated the Wii VC so far we could get everything we really need. You mentioned the Game Boy Zelda games already but I'll throw in the Pokemon titles, Kirby's Dream Land, Metroid 2, Wario Land, and Metal Gear Solid as well. Past that we'll most likely run into some obscure puzzle game people might end up liking.
