A Few Words About Unfinished

You might see a different tag on some videos around here. Here's what's up.

If I put a photo of myself here, it's almost like a proper
If I put a photo of myself here, it's almost like a proper "Letter from the Editor" or something, right?

There's a real inflexibility that comes with the term "Quick Look." It actually wasn't always that way, but now that we've been putting those words in front of videos for over five years, there's something of an expectation about what, exactly, a Quick Look is.

For starters, they aren't quick. At least, they aren't anymore. They're usually a solid chunk of a game, sometimes crossing the one-hour mark. That's pretty weird when you consider that the first few of these were around 15 minutes. With that in mind, a game needs to have that significant chunk available before we can Quick Look it. That excludes a lot of things, assuming you're interested in having the term "Quick Look" mean something specific. For a time, we thought about just using that name for everything, regardless of the state of a given game. Preview versions of games, demos, and final products all fell under that umbrella. It's led to a little confusion over the years and created a bit of a reluctance on our part to record multiple Quick Looks for the same game. To help sidestep some of those (admittedly semantic) issues and give us a defined place for preview-style coverage, we're creating "Unfinished."

Unfinished is a spot for us to look at everything else, like Early Access games from Steam that consist of little more than a sandbox and a dream. Or very early (and very restricted) preview copies of games from major publishers. Maybe an occasional tech demo or two. And, potentially, video footage that would have fallen under the "Man, I Saw That!" or "What It Is" banners in the past. We want to keep it somewhat flexible without losing the meaning. But the general idea is that what we're looking at isn't full-fledged enough to carry an entire Quick Look just yet.

Actually, how about instead of writing all this, I just show you what Drew sent around to everyone else today?

Jeff and I were talking today about finally taking advantage of Early Access-type games. There's potentially a lot of content there and it feels weird not to acknowledge games that people are talking about in an official video capacity. They don't really fit into Quick Looks, and locking them behind a paywall in UPF is a little weird, so we need something new.

The name we came up with was Unfinished. It's universal so that we can include stuff outside of Steam, and it gets across that these games are not in their final state and are not necessarily subject to Quick Look-style treatment.

Naming it something completely new (and not like "Early Look" or something) also frees us up to be flexible with the format, which will be helpful since pre-release games are so wildly different in terms of content and scope. Maybe sometimes the video is only 7 min long. Maybe it's a series of hour-long videos. Maybe it's a one-person video. Maybe we do three games in one video with cameras and a set. Maybe we even incorporate editor impressions and screenshots from preview events that we weren't allowed to take footage at.

What do you guys think?

Drew

This actually led to about 14 emails back and forth as we decided what sort of title format we should use (like, should we put the version number in the headline? What happens when we don't know the version number?) and a few other details. But here's the short version: Look for coverage of Bugbear's Next Car Game to hit tomorrow and... well... I'm going to go see how far along Audiosurf 2 is at the moment.

Only problem I have is Unfinished has negative connotations (with the un prefix), at least to me. A more positive spin for a title could be As It Develops, In Progress, In Utero. Something that denotes growth towards final rather than something that is not final.

More video is always good. Not a fan of the title, but that's a quibble I could get over easily if it's good content.

I think i have to agree with some of the others when i say i dont really like the "unfinished" name it does seem to have a negative connotation. "Early look" or "Crackin wise with Vin Dawg N' the Boyz" seem like better names.

Yeah, I suppose this came about from a discussion on the forums and long periods of AAA games missing from the release calendar.

So a new format open to what ever is good. I think it should be more like a free unpro fridays with a little more serious tone. Group of folks in the studios with someone who has actually played around with the early access game. Since they can sometimes be dense.

Unfinished sounds bit too professional. How about "Half assed look", and put half a donkey as the splash screen.

Anyway, I'm in. There seems to be lots of interesting early access games out there.

As someone who has currently backed over 600 crowd-funded projects and has about 50 of the 88 Early Access games on Steam, I think this is a great idea.

Format does sound fine, but not sure on the term label though, but that's just a personal preference thing. Certainly interested in seeing what's produced and go from there. All the best of luck!

I know this may seem like more divulgence into more semantics, but what about games like Broken Age? Would that be appropriate for Unfinished, or does it fall into a episodic category? In fact, does episodic count as unfinished?

I think it will be similar to how they did The Walking Dead. The quicklook was done a day or two after the first episode was released but the review was done when the game was complete.

It's a good idea, but the name is pretty dry.

I don't suppose you considered the title Work In Progress? That sounds more like a Giant Bomb feature to me.

Agreed. Good idea, but the name needs work. Much too unimaginative and stale. Doesn't fit Giant Bomb to me.

And "quick look" is? The title does a very good job at setting up what you are about to watch.

Sounds good to me!

Only thing I'd add is that I'm not a fan of having multiple games in 1 video, without good indexing. I've often found that I'm interested in only 1 or 2 games in an Unprofessional Friday and it can be a bit difficult to jump to those specific game(s). I realize that's the format for UF and I'm fine with that but I wouldn't want that annoyance to expand to this new format as well.

Anyway, good to see you guys continue to innovate!

I don't care what things are called, I care about pure content. The more content the Giantbomb staff are freed up to produce is all good in my books, finding a name for something that can allow them to feel better about creating content on it makes me very happy.

Also I agree that in the past these types of games only being covered in longer live shows was weird, since I tend to not be able to watch 100% of each show each week, usually only a bit here and there and only sometimes do I get to sit down and watch most or all of a show, and I feel sucky cause I could have missed something that I would have enjoyed seeing simply because of the crazy huge amount of content in those live shows. Potentially breaking some of that off into more specific chunks of content is super rad, ensures I have a larger chance to see and keep track of all of it, and it sounds like just straight up more of it will exist as a whole.

It's weird how Brad was arguing during the GOTY deliberations that Early Access does a little bit of disservice to unfinished games because there's no telling how unfinished they really are and how that could discourage people from playing the game and now we'll have a feature covering them. I'm not complaining or anything, I just find it weird, that's all.

And MIST is a better name.

Early Access games are quickly becoming something I enjoy. I currently own Rust, Starbound, and Kerbal Space Program. It's fun seeing them grow and whatnot. It'll be interesting to see the crew play them and even revist them later down the line to see how they change.

I approved of more content for non-premium member. It always feel weird when UPF is sometimes basically a bunch of quick looks that normal user has no access to. Premium show should be restricted to games that is really experimental or older games I think.

Good on you guys for figuring out how to deal with this flood of unfinished games for sale. People defiantly need to see if some of these are worth their time. In the few Early Access games and such I've bought they have ran the range of 'solid base with details just needing to be fleshed out' to 'hardly a game yet' and I would like to see the state of things firsthand and how the developers are working on it before shelling out cash for what is essentially a preorder.

Nice. I was hoping for a look at the Next Car Game, I actually bought it, and it's pretty cool. The car physics are awesome! It also comes with a separate dl of a tech demo that I really hope they include in the unfinished look. I messed around with both pieces last night for a couple hours and was surprised how much fun I had with it.
