A Guy, A Crate and Seven Days of Lord of the Rings Online

Jordan Long's going inside a box and travelling across the country. For art.

This is the box that Jordan Long will be locked in for seven days, as he travels towards Oregon.
This is the box that Jordan Long will be locked in for seven days, as he travels towards Oregon.

One white t-shirt, one pair of pants, one pair of underwear, one pair of socks, one pair of tennis shoes, 28 protein bars, four gallons of water, a computer, vitamin D tablets, aspirin, wet wipes, three cooling fans, a pillow, five feet of tubing and two custom air-sealed containment units for waste.

All of these items are being been packed in a box...plus a person.

Tonight, Jordan Long will be locked inside of a crate. That crate will be placed inside of a truck and driven from Bald Knob, Arkansas to Portland, Oregon over the course of seven days. This is not an ordinary crate, though; there's a computer with Lord of the Rings Online installed. Long will be playing his LOTRO character, Adanwings, the whole time. He will not leave the crate.

Why someone would do this is an excellent question.

Long is a performance and video artist known for some extraordinary stunts. Here's what I mean.

Perhaps an even better question is why he'd choose to play Lord of the Rings online, of all things.

"I chose LOTRO because of my connection to it," explained Long over email. "I played the game long before coming up with this art piece. I love the books, and a friend got me into the game itself. It was a friendly environment that I found inviting. I'll be running mostly a Lvl 65 hunter and Lvl 57 warden throughout the performance. And yes, I play non-MMO games, including Team Fortress 2 and Portal 2."

This particular piece, which Long is calling "Box Shipment #2," is part of his exploration of trauma and human coping mechanisms. Long experienced trauma himself, leading him to develop these series of pieces, but rather understandably, he wasn't willing to divulge what happened.

"In a lot of my work I explore mechanisms that either I or others have used to deal with PTSD [post traumatic stress disorder]," said Long. "Video games are being used in different forms to combat the effects of the disorder. People find many ways to deal with their symptoms, and what works for one won't work for everyone. It's a subject that's close to me, but I study it from an analytical perspective. Otherwise it wouldn't be art; it would be therapy."

This is Adanwings, the character Long will be playing as in Lord of the Rings Online.
This is Adanwings, the character Long will be playing as in Lord of the Rings Online.

"Box Shipment #2" presumes there was a first box, which is true. That one was just an experiment, though, where Long was stationary inside of a crate over four days. No one surrounding Long even knew he was in the crate at the time, which was meant to explore his own reactions to crazy situations.

"Being in such a confined space accentuates that feeling of being so far removed from a world that's going on around you," he said, "AND the odd feeling of safety it brings with it, even when it's a scenario that terrifies me (like places I can't get out of)."

I don't know about you, but being locked in a box for any amount of time, with or without an online game to keep me company, sounds pretty horrifying. Even walking through the recreated Batcave with tiny, tiny hallways at Six Flags to reach the Batman ride managed to make me sweat, and getting locked inside a coffin while alive definitely ranks within my top five worst possible scenarios.

You'll be able to follow along with this experiment in real-time, too. Long has enlisted a fellow LOTRO companion, Townsfolk, to document Long's experiences as Adanwings inside the game, while Brandi Roberts, a friend, will be blogging about Long's reactions in the real-world. Updates on both will be available on www.jordanwaynelong.com.

There will even be a real-time GPS tracker, in case you need up-to-the-minute news.

Long has been speaking with a doctor about how his body will react to the prolonged position and sustained exposure to darkness (thus the vitamin D tablets), but he leaves certain elements unchecked to enhance the performance factor. After all, he's doing all of this to help make a point.

Despite the research and preparation, though, it's hard not to imagine the task ahead sounds daunting.

"I like the audience to know that the emotions I'm going through are honest," he said. "So yes, there are moments when I get scared because I don't know what's going to happen. But that feeling is interesting to me. Trauma is a very personal experience. When it's happening, nothing else in the world matters."

As of this writing, the final touches are being put on the box. At 10:00 p.m. CST, he goes inside. The final part of the performance will take place on July 7 at the Fourteen30Contemporary.

"At this point I'm just trying to relax and get my mind in the right place," he told me last night, a little more than 24 hours before this all starts. "I have prepared for this as much as I can and I'm ready."

Oh performance art... letting the lazy call themselves artists since whenever they decided to make the term up.

Also LORTO? Really? I would die a lonely death in that box, and not for lack of food, air or water.

I kinda want to know how those "custom containers for waste" work.
I'm glad that there are people out there who are prepared to put themselves through extremes just to see what happens.
I think people's problems are that he's gaming for a moth and almost belittling the hobby. If he was just sitting in a box and being driven from A to B for a week, most of us would have never heard about it. But because he's playing video games he get's wider exposure which opens him up to the full force of internet.
If you don't like what he's doing or can't see how it's "art" then you don't have to be a dick about it. He's not hurting anybody with his actions, just experimenting.

Wait........ how does he plan on playing Lord of the Rings *ONLINE* while in a tiny box aboard a moving vehicle?

Ya know, I'm sure he's thought about it. I once played WoW on the road using a friends 3G connection and WiFi hotspot from his phone.

Was that really a strong enough connection to play WoW? I'm no networking wiz, so I might just be out of touch here.

Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't want to do any 25 person content on it, but you're able to do the basic shit like daily quests, auction house, leveling etc.

I get his stuff but this one is a little iffy, idk maybe pick another social interaction than LOTRO but he said he had a thing for LOTRO, so.. can't argue with that, the worst part for me would be taking a crap in that thing, oh and not moving, also I wonder how he's getting his internet and power 0.o. Remember that guy that stood in a box for a month with no human interaction at all just someone sending shit through a tiny door, he would talk to a camera without knowing if anybody was listening, that was fucked up :D.

@patrickklepek: EVERYONE'S A CRITIC, EH, PATRICK?

An artist I knew did a piece where he hanged himself in front of about 300 people, he had a dead man's trigger to drop the rope for when he was about  to die, though. He was pretty crazy.

Playing LOTRO is probably on par with that, actually.

Art is whatever you want it to be. I think dancing is stupid, and I don't think It has any place being called art, but it is. Some people feel differently about it than I do. So while you might think this has no place in being called art, it may still resonate with somebody else. It might even only resonate with him and nobody else. Even then, I think it still has its place. Hell, to some people, science is art. Some people even think math is art. I'm not going to argue with them. Maybe just the fact that something makes them happy is good enough for them to feel it's art. And I agree.

Nice to see an article about art on a video game site that isn't about "game art." From an artist who also enjoys games, this is pretty cool. I thought the box tower performance was pretty cool, but this road trip one I'm not so sure about. The artist's comments on the differences between art and therapy are pretty interesting, especially considering there's and entire field of practice called "art therapy."

Honestly my biggest concern is stuff like his blood clotting and basically major health issues that are involved with not moving for prolonged amounts of time.

That and I guess playing computer games for a week straight.

Watching the video I couldn't help but think, "so basically, this is a discovery zone for existentialists."

Hehehe, but really I enjoy this guy's work.  One of these days I'd like to be able to see a performance in person.

Weird...at first I didn't understand the box tower thing but the more I watched it, the more I could see how terrified he was and I guess my stomach just dropped at the realization he is probably reliving his trauma with that piece. Then walking off to just get away from everybody once he was out.

Well the Supreme Court ruled video games are a form of expression and free speech, like literature and visual art. So I think this guy is just driving that point home, or to Oregon, depending which one is closer.

The word art only gets in the way it seems. There are actions or objects that have no rational purpose but evoke a reaction (emotional, intellectual) in people, and people seem to have the urge to create and/or experience these actions or objects. Predefined rules and expectations of certain media are bullshit. This is a very simple principle. You don't have to like any particular thing or even respect it's intentions, but the whole "is something art" discussion is utterly pointless, has always been and even more so in the post-modern age.

Seriously, how easy is that concept?

Already had someone do similar in Norway about 10 years ago, a project loosely translated to Decay, dealing with the topic of how much a relatively healthy human body would 'waste' when confined to a small, dark space underground without social interactions, bathroom, other common luxuries, for a week.

Art is quite an individual thing, some people call dance art, some people don't. In the end art is whatever you want it to be. It's not like it plays a significant role in our lives anyway. Even though some people vastly believe that.

lol, I got a full time job, wife and two kids... I have to cut down on my sleep to get time to play the huge amount of games coming out nowadays. Getting 7 days even if it's in a small box playing an MMO does sound kind of awesome. :)

I'd find this interesting if he was doing it as just some crazy stunt out of boredom or curiosity. The fact that he's so pretentious about this "art" is what is turning me off about the whole thing.

Indeed, I think artists know that if they take two toilet papers and glue them together and hang them in a string from the celling at an art museum and pretend to be all deep about it people will pay them. In the end it's a way of getting food on the table I guess.

It would felt better if he was just a dude locking him self in a box playing a MMO for a week with out being all arty-farty about it.

Great article Patrick. It's nice to see stuff like this on the site alongside all the regular industry news, gives the place more of a personality.

As for Jordan, I wish him the best of luck in his endeavour. I can't imagine how it must feel to be afflicted with PTSD, and to see this guy actively facing his fear to raise awareness of his condition is great. It'd be cool to see a follow-up to this after the ordeal, like an interview, to see how the experience went and what he felt he achieved.

On a much more childish note, 'Bald Knob' is officially my new favourite place name ever.
