A Look Back At Building The Bastion

As Supergiant's first game nears its release date, we figured it'd be worth taking a look back at how it all came together.

No Caption Provided

The first time I saw Bastion was back in our old office in Sausalito. Greg Kasavin came by and wanted to show me a quick glimpse of a project he was working on with some of the guys he spent time with back at EALA. It was a curious little thing that immediately stood out because of its audio. Even when coming out of a tinny little laptop speaker, hearing the narrator tell his tale while also reacting to the things I was doing on-screen felt different. At times, it felt like magic. The game itself seemed reasonably cool, too. The blocks rose up from the bottom of the screen in a really neat way, forming the pathways that The Kid ran along as he grabbed a glowing stone of some kind and made his way to the relative safety of the Bastion. Weirdly enough, that was the only sequence I played for around a year or so, but that bit--the beginning of the game, which will be the demo portion of this week's Xbox Live Arcade release--was enough to make me a believer in the project. Well, that and some discussion about where the game was going from there.

I think, over the course of development, I probably played that intro sequence three or four times, seeing bits and pieces of it improve around the edges, but the core of it was still the same impressive piece that it was when I first put my hands on it. The funny thing is that even after talking to almost everyone that's worked on the game and being a part of the recurring Building the Bastion series that we produced to chronicle what it's like to strike out on your own as an independent game developer, I still didn't know what to expect from the final game. All of the bits and pieces we had seen looked cool, and from seeing the beginning of the game, I knew the main idea was sound, but I guess I hadn't really put much thought into how it was all going to come together. In a way, some of us had become way too close to it. I sort of set the whole thing up with Greg originally. Vinny went through all of the footage and cut together the clips used on the show. Ryan hosted the show and asked them a ton of questions. Brad, wisely, hung back a bit. I think he probably had the purest experience of us all. Unsurprisingly, I think he's probably the game's biggest fan. As of this writing, he's the top guy on all four of its leaderboards.

Either way, none of that really matters that much. As soon as we went ahead with Building the Bastion, I knew we'd end up seeing too much of that game and that running an actual, scored review would be right out of the question. Rather than hem and haw about that end of the coverage, I said up front that we wouldn't review the game. And I'll say again, right here, that I recommend you seek out various reviews on the topic before making a purchasing decision rather than just taking what I'm saying here on faith. Better safe than sorry, right?

That said, we talk about the various aspects of the game on this week's podcast, and I recommend you check that out when it runs later today. The short version, however, is that I'm pretty blown away by how enjoyable Bastion is. The team makes good on that core concept--the narration that's powered by your on-screen actions while simultaneously telling you everything you need to know about the world--in ways I'd never even thought of. It builds up its own conventions and then breaks them in inventive ways. It provides an arsenal of exciting weapons that are as fun to upgrade as they are to use in a combat system that rewards skillful play. The story is surprisingly emotional, taking some exciting turns during the back third that made me want to finish it not once but twice. On top of that, it looks great the entire time. Ryan was the one that pointed out that, over the course of seeing all the pieces of Bastion as just pieces, it became easy to lose sight of the "simple" stuff, like the way that ground rises up from the bottom of the screen and forms the pathways you'll take from one area to the next.

I'll refrain from going into too much detail. After all, we said we weren't going to review the game. But if you'll allow me one more recommendation... grab the demo and see it for yourself. Anyway, here are links to the show, in case you want to see what went on during the game's development.

Our first look at Supergiant happened in the above installment of the Happy Hour, hence Will and Norm's... uh... well, I'm not sure how to describe whatever it is that's going on in that shot up there. Later shows were broken out into easily found pieces, and are listed below so you can catch up with Amir, Gavin, Greg, Jen, Darren, and the rest of the gang.

With the game nearly out, this seems like a good time to look back at the five installments of Building the Bastion. It's hard to believe that so much time has passed since we first covered the game, right when it was getting announced as a selection in the PAX 10. When we started this site, I wanted to try doing things differently. I think we've generally succeeded in many of our goofball adventures, but I'm also proud that we're able to handle something like Building the Bastion. Not to get all "behind the curtain" on you, but conducting interesting (well, they're interesting to us, hopefully you agree) behind-the-scenes coverage of games that goes beyond the dumb "what platforms is it coming out for and when is it coming out???" interview and starts to say something more about both the games themselves and the people making them is pretty difficult to pull off, especially when you're running a reviews section. In my mind, though, you can't have one without the other. It keeps everyone honest. Pursuing something like this with Supergiant was kind of a risky move, and coming out a year ago and saying "here's a game we're not going to review" was kind of wild, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you've enjoyed it, and I hope we can do something similar in the future.

I really enjoyed all the behind the scenes coverage. It's something you don't see alot of if you are not part of the gaming industry. Well done Giantbomb.

I will definitely be trying this game out. I like the idea that it's new and original! Instead of the same old rubbish thats being released every week. I agree with Giantbomb not reviewing it due to all the coverage they've given it. A 5 star review wouldn't have any credibility.

Well I liked the coverage of GB of Bastion , regardless the friendship between you duders and Greg Kasavin , and hope it is a example of things to come from GB in terms of game coverage , as you said something more than the usual "when and what platforms etc." interviews. In no doubt I would call foul on your part for reviewing or not the game. Good job Giant Bomb ...

It's been really interesting watching this game grow from a small, independent project with promise that Greg was involved in to what seems to be one of the best XBLA releases in a good while and a strong start to Summer of Arcade. All the Building the Bastion coverage on GB goes way beyond the usual "documentaries" that developers like Lionhead and BioWare like to produce, which made it infinitely more enjoyable. It wasn't always confident or pretty, and there was some D&D artwork involved, but I always looked forward to more and now we all have some insider perspective on a very good and very finished game. Cool stuff, all involved.

I really enjoyed watching the "Building the Bastion" series since the beginning. It was entertaining, informative and fresh. Congrats to Supergiant games for their achievement and GB for having the balls to try something different with their game coverage.

Trying to stuff coins into my xbox360 early. Does it take silver dollars?

Giantbomb is the single most important thing to have happened to video game journalism in the last 3 years. No one is doing what this site has been doing, and forging new grounds is great to see. There is a large percentage of video game journalism that has traditionally adhered so closely to the, "reviews, previews, inane and juvenile news updates, equally inane and juvenile top ten lists", that it makes it really hard to take any of it seriously. So many words are wasted with little value coming out of what is written on many of these other sites.
Thank you Giantbomb for not doing top ten lists. Thank you Giantbomb for quick looks and less reviews, I'd rather see 10-20 mins of gameplay than read 6 paragraphs on how a games gamplay feels, and thank you for unique, (for games journalism), segments like Building the Bastion. I would have discovered this game on my own and most likely bought it regardless of your coverage, but having the kind of exposure to Bastion that I got from Giantbomb is a unique and informed experience. I think that is exactly what you guys set out to do with this site and it has evolved nicely.
Keep it coming.

I respect the decision to not review the game. Article seemed to be pretty emotional to me, can't wait for the game. I'm gonna buy it tomorrow, looked great from the begining and still does.

Jeff, thanks for posting your thoughts.  Although not a formal review, I think you made your feelings on the game clear.

I think you guys have handled this as fairly and professionally as anyone could have.  And I hope that you guys will continue this kind of close in coverage for selected games in the future.  Really brings a lot of insight to the development process that we otherwise would not see.

Building the Bastion > Review of Bastion

If you could realistically do 'Building the ___'s all the time you guys could never review another game for all I care. I've never seen anything like Building the Bastion that didn't come off as an overbearing sales pitch.

It's been a pretty great experience seeing the gears and springs involved in running the machine.Compared to the endless stream of trailers and PR speak,I'd say that this was a very effective way to not only sell a game, but to humanize an entire niche of the gaming industry and make it an easier and more personal choice to support the game, its makers, and the independent community in general. My hat's off to both the Supergiant and Whiskey staffs.Keep doing really cool, uncommon features such as this.

Great write up to summarize the entire Bastion experience for everyone. More content like this is very needed. Seeing the people actually working behind the game is much more interesting (to me personally) than just seeing the game over and over again at times.

I can't say enough about how awesome your coverage was on this game, Giant Bomb crew. No other website does this much coverage on such a small title. It's a really good way to bring attention to non-blockbusters, and it's gotten plenty of people (including myself) interested in this game. I'll be buying it on PC day one.

If nothing else, following the games development so closely allows a close connection to the game, which is weird. It happens I guess.

I'm proud of you guys. I wasn't sure how the review was going to go, seeing as you guys are close friends with Greg and being smothered in coverage, but actually showing real integrity and not reviewing it at all is exactly why I listen to you guys every week.

Well, that and teaching me how to fart.

Will be playing this myself once it eventually reaches Steam, which I'm sure it will.

@SpheriQ: @Surkov: Thanks guys, was totally thinking of Brad Muir with Trenched addressing that question

I would definitely expect a PS3 release since WB is behind it - but with it being the lead game on Summer of Arcade, expect to wait a while (like Limbo or Braid)

Building a Bastion has been one of my favorite series on this website. It is as unique to Giant Bomb as the quick looks, but more personal. I am buying Bastion ASAP, because I want to support the great crew of guys behind the game, but mostly because it has turned out to be a damn fine game.

I really hope your "Building the Bastion" segments end up on Xbox Live in the downloads section next to the game, because I think a lot of people who play the game would find them interesting. I think it's definitely something to look into since you already got your "Ask me Anything" video on Halo Waypoint.

Well, I kinda doubt that arcade games get this much of marketing buzz that they act as system sellers. Not at this time in the console cycle. If it wouldn't be for GB, I wouldn't have known of Trenched, Bastion etc.Anyone who is okay with the fact to own more than one console already got them. Sony/MS clearly hate money if they still act like this.

The nice thing is that I really feel I can trust you guys when you're so positive about the game and know that it's highly likely that the game is indeed of high quality. But I also really appreciate that you were willing and able to not run a review for the game in the interests of avoiding any risk of a lack of objectivity.

(Apologies for those two horrendously written sentences.)

I'd heartily agree - the preview, insider coverage of Bastion is light years away from most previews of games. I'd say the only thing that comes close is the Portal 2 app that came out the same time of the game, and even that was only post-release.

Not sure you'll be able to strike gold again given that a) getting such insider access to a game in development is difficult, and you can probably only get it from an indie studio that doesn't have its own tightly controlled PR process and b) it's hard to judge an indie title (or really any title) early in development and see if it'd be worth this sort of coverage. But here's hoping that you guys do it again.

Thanks for doing these segments and giving us this behind the scenes coverage of the game, I hope ya'll do something similar again in the future. I appreciate GB being up front about the conflict of interest and not reviewing the game; it works out because the coverage we did get is way more cool and exciting. It's all good anyways - I was able to check out reviews from other outlets today, which have all been positive, plus the GB crew seems genuinely excited about the game. Will definitely be picking this up tomorrow off of XBLA.

Ha! A nice little thing I found: in GameSpot's Bastion video review, there is a little glimpse at the game's leaderboards, with bradx0r at the top, and than GiantBombing and Mindcavity close.
