A Rather Selfish PSA For You Mortal Kombat Players

If you've been unable to play online, there's something we can all do about it.

The desynch error message feels a lot like this.
The desynch error message feels a lot like this.

Look, it sucks when the games we buy don't work as intended. It's almost worse when a game that used to work just fine actually becomes broken for one reason or another. That's been the case with Mortal Kombat lately, which was working just fine online for awhile, but now that there's DLC and "klassic" skins packs out there to purchase, things have gone way, way sideways.

The problem, apparently, lies in the classic skins that came as part of various retailer-specific pre-order packages. If you downloaded these back in April and have them on your system, every game you attempt to join will, if my experience is any indication, totally fail to stay connected. According to a post on the game's official forums, a patch is in the works to fix this issue once and for all. However, you can do your part today by simply deleting and redownloading any of those individual skins that you might have on your Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 was also suffering from this issue, but it looks like a patch is already available there that fixes this. I assume you could also just delete the skins if you've purchased that skins pack that came out awhile back, but I haven't tried that.

I'm mostly posting this information because getting it from the official site is something of a nightmare. Even a direct link to the thread would just throw the site's age gate in your face, following by a redirect to the homepage. Super annoying! This seems like the sort of info that they'd want to blast out onto the homepage of the site and the in-game Message of the Day, since it's an issue that effectively makes the game unplayable online, and both players in a match need to have performed this fix to make it work.

So, do your part. Go redownload those skins, and while you're at it, download all of the compatibility packs for the DLC characters. Because the other incredibly frustrating part of the process is that those are optional downloads, so if the person you're playing with hasn't grabbed those packs or purchased the three available downloadable characters, you can't use the characters you've paid for! Insane, right? This one can't be laid at the feet of the developers, though. This one's an issue with Microsoft's rules regarding maximum patch sizes, I believe. Stuff like this is what makes me want the next generation of consoles to come sooner rather than later. Hopefully they'll be able to guarantee hard drives in all machines next time and force multiplayer patches down to all players to keep everyone running the same stuff at the same time.

Oh, also, Rain is available today. He's pretty crazy, I bet the combo videos will be nuts.

The pre-order costumes are nothing but Netherrealm's fault because those are already on the disc, so I still have absolutely no idea how they could be causing errors. The MK1 and 3 ninja costumes worked fine online on day one, it makes absolutely no sense that they don't anymore.

I have a bigger problem with MK online, that the WB support couldn't solve and now I can barely play offline MK. My game freezes every time I press "Start" (or any other button) in the start menu. I has something to do with the online aspect writing to the save file, because without it, it goes fine, only then I don't have the online key. Super annoying.

I think Criterion have been the only goddamn company that has successfully done competitive games with DLC that don't fuck up or throw up community splitting barriers. Sure the title updates kept getting progressively bigger and bigger (I think the Big Surf Island DLC was 3.5GB due to rolling in every other feature DLC and all of the cars) but at least it just fucking worked. If updated, I could play with ALL of the DLC against someone who had none. Then I would proceed to destroy their ass with my flying Delorean. EVERYBODY WINS.

Surely the additional characters, skins and fatalities would not be so big that they couldn't throw out a title update with all of them in it and if you want to play or use them, you pay for an unlock code. Hell doing it this way means they could even do it on the fly and it would be done in 5 seconds rather than waiting for the damn character to download.

Selfish people who don't download the FREE compatibility packs piss me off. If everyone would just download it we would have no problems everything would flow and I wouldn't have to think "Gosh, I hope this guy has the compat back for the new DLC I just bought..." Having to go OUT of my way to use the stuff I purchased is what is irking me.

Interesting... you complain about other people beeing "selfish" for not downloading a patch that most people probably don't even know exists and wouldn't change anything for them in terms of content.

And at the same time you expect them to go out of their way so YOU can use something YOU bought, while complaining that YOU have to do the same thing. Wonder who's the selfish guy in that setup...

I understand the situation is annoying, but blaming the players for it is kinda ignorant after the article pointed out that getting information about these patches is anything but easy when the issue isn't even mentioned in the message of the day. If you want to be angry at somebody be angry at those people that are repsonsible for this fuckup. An issue like this should be fixed trough a mandatory game update and not serveral optional "patch packs" that are hidden somewhere in XBL/PSN without a mention of their existence anywhere.

The implication is that people are actively not downloading them to be vindictive, they're not arbitrarily calling them selfish.

Yeah I have, and we should be so lucky to get 3gb of updates free. If space is the issue then consoles need bigger hard drives. Meanwhile on pc, bring it on.

I don't get your reasonment.
5 bucks for one fully fledged character is cheap unless you just don't like the game. It's not like if they released re-hashed versions of the same dude over and over.
To me, you just sound like the type of guy who hates DLC, because if you call 5 bucks overpriced, no DLC will ever be cheap for you.

Unless you plan to buy the Force Unleashed 2 dlc's that costs one buck.

MS has nothing to do with this. NRS are just completely shit at releasing patches. They're worse than Blizzard because at least you can still play WoW when a patch goes sideways. It doesn't just boot you and make you jump through fucking hoops to play. (Completely beside the point since why would you play WoW anyway, right?)  MK's had garbage online almost from day 1 and NRS has done fuck-all to fix it. They literally do not give a shit. They want your money and that's all. From the minute they said "No, Boon lied, we want money for on-disc DLC after all," I said "Fuck those lying cocksuckers." I haven't looked back since and that's been the correct path to take. Why play a game that doesn't work whose developer has no interest of fixing it? Or, at the very least, doesn't deem the issue worthy enough to fix QUICKLY. Sorry, I'm not redownloading shit. How about YOU fix your godawful online. That sounds reasonable to me. Funny how Street Fighter can do this shit smoothly, but MK keeps shitting the bed and wondering where the stink is coming from.   Stop supporting Netherrealm, basically. They've proven, for MONTHS now, that they have no interest in fixing their online. They're grabbing for your money and that's it. Fuck them.

Good Lord.

@Nethlem: See thats where your wrong.  MK searches online and when new content is avalible it fucking PROMPTS you about new content.  If people would just take two seconds to look at that and download a 80mb file which takes all of 2 minutes  the online wouldn't be so borked.

Those are compatibility updates, not patches.

I fail to see the difference. It was a mandatory update that aided online play. Besides, they released the game like this. Don't blame MS for Ed Boon's broken game.

It was only mandatory if you wanted to play Vietnam.

Not really related to online, but a problem I've noticed recently since some DLC. Has anyone else noticed special moves going off without pressing the right button combinations? They've been triggered by doing the button combos backwards and it's ruining my ability to combo properly.

Few quick things

1) Mortal Kombat is a good game in terms of competitive and casual play. I've played the game with friends who hated the franchise, and a lot of them now have the game.
2) I'm pretty sure that when PSN went down Jeff did not tell you to not play the PS3. Pretty sure.
3) If you think it's 'biased journalism' and dislike that, I free you from the shackles that bind you to Giantbomb. You can now go onto other sites!

Interesting... you complain about other people beeing "selfish" for not downloading a patch that most people probably don't even know exists and wouldn't change anything for them in terms of content.

To be fair, the game DOES prompt people when new content is released once they hit Start/X (PS3)/A(360) for the first time after the content has been released. They can scroll through the available content, then, and the price in USD or Microsoft Points is listed at the bottom. There's no reason to not download the compatibility packs... they're free AND they contain classic skins to use.

The only feasible reasons to not do it:

1. Can't be bothered to download small things for free (IE Lazy).
2. Can't be bothered to see what's available and what is and isn't free (IE Lazy, again).
3. Don't want to play against the new characters and by not downloading the compatibility packs ensure no one can use the new characters against them  (what do you call this? Selfish? Being an asstard because they can? Something else?).

Oh, that's why I missed 'em. Kitana and Jade got some more costumes I see!
They will either give Mileena a costume alongside another (Sindel? Skarlet?) or they figured she had enough what with her almost-nude bonus costume.
