A Team ICO HD Collection Looks More And More Likely

It looks more and more likely that we'll see an HD bundle of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus on the PS3.

It feels as if an announcement of an ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD collection is a certainty as we head into Tokyo Games Show 2010. Rumors of a supposed PS3 bundle of these two beloved PS2-era titles have been particularly persistent, circulating for about a year. It's clear that people want the collection, and it's also appearing much more likely that something is up SCE's sleeves. The latest three rumors indicating that such a collection exists are powerful ones indeed.

Let's take a look, first, at what has prompted the new round of rumors. Last weekend, US retailer Walmart listed ICO/Shadow of the Colossus PS3 for an April 2011 release. No mention of a remake is made in the listing, but it's priced similar to the God of War Collection--a collection you have to assume is the model SCE looks at when considering PS2-era remakes. That one had two games, the press liked it, and the fans gobbled it up.

It bears mentioning that the ICO/Shadow of the Colossus bundle has been listed before at other retailers--much earlier than this one, in fact--but none have the sort of pull, power, or shelf space that Walmart has. It's OK to raise your eyebrow at this listing. It's convincing.

== TEASER ==But after Walmart re-ignited the rumor mill, Eurogamer got in touch with a mysterious source that has added some heat to these rumblings. The source confirmed SCE's plans to push out an ICO/Shadow of the Colossus collection, though the source said it was possible that the collection could see an earlier March 2011 release.

And now it appears that we have some box art to look at. Swedish retailer Webhallen's image from its listing of the game looks rather convincing, but it's impossible to tell if it's authentic. The image, which was apparently spotted first by a Twitter account that doesn't haven an affiliation with Sony yet goes by the name "PlayStation Team," hasn't been something Sony is willing to talk about. As is proper, the publisher is giving out its "no comment on rumor or speculation" boilerplate in regards to this image, as well as these latest rumors, across the board (via Joystiq).

As previously reported, Sony is open to PS2 HD remake collections beyond the God of War Collection, which makes this Team ICO collection seem even more like a real thing. Speaking with IGN at this year's E3, SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida spoke highly of the God of War Collection and said Sony is "looking to continue to do these [kinds] of HD conversions." And of course, a Sly Cooper collection is already confirmed to be en route.

Whether that means ICO and Shadows of Colossus--two highly regarded and well-loved games by critics and fans alike--will be the next collection is still up in the air. I suppose we'll have to continue waiting, at least until Tokyo Game Show later this week.

Here's the full image of the boxart from Webhallen:

UPDATE:  The latest issue of Famitsu confirms that ICO and Shadow of the Colossus will each be receiving an HD makeover. The two games, however, are being listed separately in the mag, making it hard to confirm that Sony intends to bundle the two games. (Via Kotaku.)

As a PS3 owner who never owned a PS2 and has never played either of these games, this makes me very happy.

I could still play both of these games on my PS3 so I'm more interested in The Sly Collection at this point.

Still, those are a couple of pretty rad games if you're into the climby, puzzly stuff.

I missed out on both these classics, and I can imagine playing them upscaled on a massive TV looks pretty poor, if I could even find copies to buy. This'll be a day one purchase for me!

I wonder if the people who get hype over ICO have even played it.. That game sucks hard. Colossus, however, does not suck.

Hopefully they keep that Ico box art for the U.S. edition, instead of using the shitty version we got originally.

Looks like I'll finally get around to playing these games that I never got a chance to the first time around.  I'm Interested to see what other collections they're going to put together like this in the future.

I missed Ico and never finished Colossus. I'd definitely like to revisit the latter in HD, willing to check out the former.

Man, this is just one more reason for me to get rid of my backwards-compatible but also flaky and loud launch PS3 in favor of one of those snazzy new slim units.

What's the market like for an old 60gb these days?

I really hope this does well, that people buy it specifically *NEW* (used doesn't register as a sale in either NPD or at Sony) and make sure they evangelize this so we get more quality refreshes like this.  The thing is a vast majority of the game buying population has no clue what these two games are (despite SotC being a Greatest Hits title).

I sure hope it's real, I wanted to play through Shadow of the Colossus again but the frame rate is horrid, sometimes making the game near unplayable. Hopefully the (possible) collection version will run at 60fps, that would be sweet.

I like how if you go to the Ico page on Giantbomb how that "artwork" is for some reason missing and replaced with the original Japanese cover.

In other news: Who do I have to kill for them to announce their going to release it already?! I'll do it! Don't stop me! -_-

Really good.  Those backwards compatible PS3s have a great resale value in the marketplace.  There are people still looking for them to play their old PS2 RPGs and such as well as their PS3 games.

Any else think it might look weird playing Shadow of the Colossus running at 60 frames a second? It worked for the God of War collection, but these games definitley have a different tone.

I'm in the same boat as you, Brad.  My launch 60gb seems to grumble a little louder every time I turn it on.

As for your inquiry, there seem to be a lot of folks who want a backwards-compatible system so they can play less popular PS2 games with ease. I must admit, it is quite convenient to be able to play PlayStation 1, 2, and 3 games all with one system; I bet you could find someone to take it off your hands.

I really want them to remaster Shadow of the Colossus and go beyond just upping the resolution and framerate.

But I don't know that it'll happen.

Oh well. I'll still buy it so I can unhook my goddamn PS2 finally.

I didn't get a chance to play these when they came out on the PS2, so it's great to see I won't miss the boat on this one.  I'll just be very, very late.
