A Visit To id Software Circa 1993

John Romero updates his blog with some ancient video footage of id Software back when they were making Doom.

Words can not describe the awesomeness of the video John Romero posted on his blog yesterday. Essentially it's a video from the early Doom days (circa 1993) at id Software. You get a tour of the office and some behind the scenes interviews with some of the major players from Id at the time. There's some fabulously ancient talk about memory usage as well as some bad-ass MIDI tunes. Also... Aladdin on the Genesis is played.

Sick... and when you think about it, this wasn't so long ago... I wonder what games will look like 15-20 years from now.

Man, that video's bad-ass. And yes, the "dudes turn on each other" feature was/is totally rad

Brings back memories. Painful memories of MS-DOS and happy memories of Doom.

Man I'm so glad we have progressed and I remember playing Doom 3 and Duke Nukem 3D and thinking they were crap. Half-Life was the first game to really get me into the FPS and the PC because before that I was an adventure/RPG and Third Person shooter guy on my Playstation and Amiga etc etc lol.

That Bobby Prince stuff is priceless :)

I love how everything is different on the Doom levels.  Skull staff power ups?  The "This Love" track on the third level instead of Doom 2?  This is really cool to see.

weird I was just playing me some DOOM, awesome stuff, games today need some of that 'Ultra-Violence' feel.

Awesome vid :) I wish more of this would get released, making off footage from old games that didn't receive it in the PR process like today (With the all the highly-scripted Developer Diarrheas today)

I'm gonna be a douchebag and say making games and the people involved always seemed like more fun back then.

I'm glad the video is getting more of the exposure it deserves, but I'm disappointed my thread about this got 0 replies while I'm getting no credit for what basically became a main page article :/

Awesome video. Even though the graphics are antiquated now, a lot of the stuff they were doing is still very impressive.

I laughed so hard when he said 'Now that's 3D!' when they were playing DOOM. Oh how innocent they were back in those days. Good times, good times.

I was a toddler when this first came out, my first gaming experience was playing Doom on a computer at my dad's work.

Damn, I miss the 90's.

I love how unimpressed she is!

"This is a hidden area!"
"Oh..... heh heh .....sigh... *looks at watch* "

Reminds me of every single time I've ever shown a game to a non-gamer.

Why are old topics bumping to the top of the board randomly??
